It is a LIE that republican leaders are religious zealots! Why, they have sex with boys and cheat on their wives and do everything god forbids as well, no BETTER then any democrat.
They just say that other people shouldn't do it. THAT is a republican!
This lie is told by the bleeding hearts in college who believe in nothing but just want to belong to something to make them feel better when their true nature comes out more clearly at an older age.
There are PLENTY of young conservatives and old socialists who proof that people pretty much remain the same throughout their lives. Note that it is ALWAYS right wingers who makes this claim as a defence for why they are voting purely on how it costs them even if they know it is wrong. A way to sooth their mind. Tell themselves long enough that this is just the way things are and soon enough they will believe it.
Apart from all its strengths it suffered one HUGE flaw.
It had the flaw of the most extreme console platformers. The HUGE "how the fuck was I supposed to know THAT" flaw.
Some platform games have lots of hidden features or specials that can only be found through methodically exploring every last pixel of a level. The worsed (or best if you like this) of them even have in the main game play. Where your progress through the game is a constant Trial and Error approach with you NOT being able to do just get it right the first time because there was no way for you to know what to do.
You know the examples, the landing target you can't see until you made the jump meaning a fall to your death until you got the jump correct. The enemy attack that you can only counter once you know what it is.
Mirror's Edge looked a LOT like a FPS and most modern FPS give the player a different style of game. If you are good most of them can be played first time around without dying because challenges are about seeing the problem and then solving it. Not, oops I died WTF happened. Mirror's Edge was nicely done in the tutorial but pretty soon you were to often caught by guards while trying to figure out where the hell you were supposed to go to.
There is a reason Tomb Raider doesn't have so many guards running around while you are exploring. ME just forgot that there is a reason racetracks have got far more signs showing you were to go then a ordinary road. Because at 300+ km/h you do NOT want to have any surprises about the upcoming corner.
For many the game held a lot of promise but since it was all about speed its "run a bit, fall, reload, run a bit more, fall, reload" gameplay just wasn't it. It appealled to the kind of person who gets a kick out of memorizing a Mario run through. For the ordinary Maria player who just wants to run through a level it was to unforgiving and to obscure with where you were supposed to go while also constantly adding pressure so you never could just look around to see what the designer had in mind you do next.
That 99% of the time there was only one path didn't help either.
While I'm sure some people use sudo to help keep them from doing stupid things in a root shell, that's really not the main purpose. There are a whole slew of legitimate things you can do with sudo that have nothing to do with protecting the system from typos/etc.
Alright, time to debunk this charlatan, who I strongly suspect of having once used Windows.
1. Allow multiple admins to each have their own "root" password -- no password sharing required.
There can be only one! If two admins ever exist, they must do battle until this natural state is restored. It is the way of the admin.
2. Avoid setting a root password, so it's impossible to get direct root access via password-authenticated
Anyone knows that you can simply disable the root password to be used as a login at all. What imposter is this that does not know this? This guy might not just use windows, he might even have a MS Phone!
3. Log every command run with elevated privileges for auditing purposes.
The other name, the hidden name for admin is root, root audits, no one audits root. Only a peer or superior can perform an audit and root will not meet a peer until his time on this earth has come to and end and he goes to the great server room in the ether.
4. Prevent (or at least make it harder) for someone to leave a root shell unattended. sudo requires re-authentication on whatever interval you desire; a root shell has no such feature
If anyone dares touch the machine of an admin, then he is no true admin. You do not protect the sacred contents of the temple with foolish traps but with sheer physical terror installed through decades of ritual abuse of your subjects.
5. Reduce the amount of typing related to run a single command with elevated privileges
I am root, my aliases are so powerful I merely have to glance at the keyboard to convey my will. Typing is for secretaries.
6. Allow non-admin users (including non-root daemons) to run specific commands with elevated privileges -- for example, allow users to edit their own
config files without admin assistance and without granting them access to all config files.
Users, with ROOT? BLASPHEMY! We must burn this heretic!
7. Allow certain commands to be run with elevated privileges without a password prompt based on group memebership/etc. For example, allow anyone in the "print_admin" group to run `killall -1 lpd` without further authentication. It's not a command you want anyone running willy-nilly, but it's not dangerous enough to require re-authentication of the session either.
Alright, that is it, GET HIM!
And I'm sure there's a whole slew of other reasons to use sudo. That's not to say a root shell isn't still a useful tool in some scenarios -- if you're going to do a series of high-privilege tasks and you're not worried about strict audit trails a root shell makes sense. But you could still get there with a non-shared password if you used sudo for privilege elevation rather than `su`.
Gosh, I would have thought putting him on a burning cross would shut him up. Alas, this poor MS drone has been so well indoctrinated his feeble mind can even in the last moments of life do nothing but spill his vile master lies. My the root have mercy on his soul.
NOBODY OWNS YOU A LIVING. There is no law anywhere that states you have some inalienable right to make your living the way you want to. You can TRY in any free nation but NOWHERE is success guaranteed.
I want to make a living as a male escort, ergo all you men who are giving sex away for free or worse PAYING for it are stealing the bread out of my mouth, you rapists are even worse!
Oh, that is my problem? Well then your friend not being signed up by some massive record label for a huge budget is NOT my problem either.
Do you buy your bread from the supermarket? What about the dreams of a guy/girl who wanted to become a baker and own their own little store making fresh tasty bread every day? No, but you buy it from the supermarket don't you. THIEF!
Times change, used to be that some people got lucky (talent never had anything to do with it) and got signed up and made it big. That is nice. But there always been far more that didn't make it.
Oh and there is such a thing as independ labels or even doing it yourself. Countless bands play purely for the love it and try to recoup some of the costs by apparearing at small events and selling a handfull of self made CD's. That not good enough for your friend? Then she ain't in it for the love of music but is just a money sucking whore who didn't get signed because she didn't suck enough dick.
Really, this is like coal-miners protesting about the closure of mines or the protests about the motor car ruining the horse trade. Except that the death of the mass music industry will only affect sell outs and shills. So cry me a river because I won't be shedding a tear.
Oh nozers! The people might have to choose! How can they possibly!
But the people have always been doing that. Really, do you also wonder just how many fast food joints people can handle? That another McD new burger is just going to fragment the market?
How many car makers are there? TV makers? Cloth makers? Drills makers? Lots! And nobody is confused.
But oh nozers, computers/mobile phones are different hence Apple might as well give up and stop selling OSX because nobody wants to have a choice... meanwhile Jobs is not laughing all the way to the bank, the bank comes to him.
The market can support a lot and does. The N900 was a pure linux phone surely of appeal only to geeks and was sold out. More then a million sold for a test phone.
Meego has a unique advantage, it is the only OPEN phone and this DOES matter. Have you ever opened an app store? Everything people want to charge money for. Totally incapable media players and they want money for it. Well Meego got Linux and therefor easy access to open, free and highly capable media players.
Imagine this "Our phone doesn't come with an app store or market. All the software is free." Could that possibly sell?
And if for nothing else, Meego is Intels attempt to get a share of the mobile market. No other mobile OS runs as far as I know on X86. Meego does run on Atom and Intel wants to sell them rather then see Arm control the entire mobile market with the constant risk that one day it might be put on the desktop.
There are far greater concerns here then "I am so confused by having to choose a phone" that exists in your mind.
Yes, Nokia sells a LOT of phones. Dirt cheap dumb phones in poor countries. They probably make so much money at it that they aren't at all in trouble. Oh wait they are.
The big money is in the smart phones and there Nokia has lost out.
Same as WM7 has been loosing out. Both have tried competing in this market and Android, iPhone and Rim have left them in the dust.
So now they are going to combine their epic powers of fail for what?
The idea that Android has to look out for Windows Phone is the same idea as MS fanboys had with every previous iteration of MS CE/Mobile and got knows what other names they have used to hide the fact of old vinegar in crappy bags.
high_rolla is then an idiot

Why Nokia Is Toast
·
· Score: 5, Insightful
To become the one and only maker of MS hardware? That is a position NOBODY wants, EVEN Foxconn is NOT that stupid. Because that is exactly what Nokia would become, a mere factory stamping out goods at FINNISH prices. Look at how nice it is to become the sole supplier for a certain Redmond based company when it comes to graphic chips... Nvidia, oh oops ATI. Loyaltie? MS knows none.
Have people really forgotten WHY Symbian came into existence? Do they not know WHY no other phone makers WANTS to be a MS only shop? Because the phone makers like most in IT KNOW what it means to be a MS lapdog and sought to escape it.
What kind of deranged mind thinks that ANY company would of its own choice consider becoming the next Dell to be desirable? Oh and that is NOT the Dell of the desktops where MS software is the near absolute ruler but the Dell of Windows ME, Bob, Vista! Dell by the way that is outsold by Apple which does NOT sell MS Windows.
It would be as if HP be loosing out in desktop sales and go all for the massive Linux desktop market to save its fortunes... might work... but not bloody likely.
Windows Mobile 7 is not some price that is hard to get either. Everyone phone maker out there can make a WM7 phone. MS is going to chance this when it has so much trouble getting any of its phones to markets already? It is a bottom feeder. The consumers have said countless times they simple do not want MS software on their phone. This is after all their Xth attempt at it, people have made their choice.
To be clear, Nokia used to have a higher market share then MS ever had. So it is trading what made it unique for a smaller market share?
Oh but maybe with WM7 it will create some great phones? Unlikely because it has failed to do so before. Nothing stopped Nokia from making the next or indeed the first iPhone itself. What both Apple and Google have shown is just how silly easy it is to create a new phone + OS and make it in the market. For that matter, so has Rim. Nokia didn't fail because it didn't have access to MS software, its competitors didn't and did very well despite OR because of it?
And here is the real irony: PC makers believe that unless their hardware comes with MS software it just don't sell. Apple doesn't count in this bit of logic. See the swift end of linux on the netbooks.
But on the mobile phone, this just ain't true. The OS makes VERY little difference in peoples choice. Even if it did, the sales figures clearly show that putting Windows on it will just chase people away.
Nokia had to either re-invent itself, possible with Linux as a base OR become one of the many hardware makers using an existing OS... and it did the latter with the least selling OS.
A brilliant move? Maybe for some MS stock owning CEO, but I think Nokia's slide to the bottom will only be hastened by this move. We shall see within the year.
If you are talking about the Anonymous from 4chan, then there isn't any group like that. That implies to much organisation, a hierachy, an organization.
The idea originally was related but NOT the same to "I am Spartacus". And many people don't even understand that statement.
The "I am Spartacus" statement is this: "I hereby declare that I am the person you are seeking and accept all responsibility for my actions." If you state this, you BECOME Spartacus, you are it and LOOSE yourself with it. You can't say, "I smallfurrycreature represent Spartacus", you surrender yourself to the cause and become it. In the movie, the people all nailed up, are ALL Spartacus and by doing so the idea of Spartacus if not the person becomes invincible. No matter how many Spartacusses you nail to a cross, there is always one more just around the corner. It is the undying hero, the person dies but the idea goes on.
This doesn't sit well with our individual culture.
Anonymous takes this even further, if people understood it. You cannot state "I am Anonymous" for this is silly. The moment you tie yourself to this concept, you are no longer anonymous. You can speak with a thousand voices, you can at best be one voice representing a thousand but never a thousand. You cannot be anonymous only be a non-significant part of it.
The real idea behind it all on 4chan was to give a name to the movements/actions that were observed. It is like watching the migration patterns of animals and calling them Bob. Just because it now sounds like a person doesn't mean that a wildebeast migrating represents Bob or is controlled by the motives of Bob.
Does any of this rant matter
Yes. The Muslim brotherhood, are they the protesters in Egypt? Some western "news" stations would have you believe this. BUT this has NOT been an Islamic revolution. It might or might not become one but the protests where NOT guiden or orchastrated by them... some PROTESTERS might have been but not the "protest". It can be hard to grasp the difference. It is the difference between the resentment of the masses and individual grievances. Same as the protests in Tunesia were not about a closed vegetable stand or in Egypt about the beating of a youth or in France about cake or in the USA about tea.
Anonymous is not a group that exists on 4chan in/b/. If anything it is the behavior of individual but unknown people who use the web to do something in a minimally organised way to have a far reaching effect. It is the mob effect on the internet.
That means that there is no point in ousting its leaders. You can get the leaders of one mob and might even be cheered for that by the mob next to it. Anonymous cheers cat killers and hunts them down. It is not a singleton, it is a class. You can spawn things from it but almost by its nature, the moment you do that is ceases to be the idea and it becomes Anonymous XYZ the group.
Anonymous doesn't have its hands on anything and has its hands on everything because we can all be Anonymous and we all aren't.
But media doesn't grasp that since they need to put a face to the name. But ultimately this means that Anonymous will just get more legenday. Strike one group down and another will take its place. Just as killing a few hundreds protestors, and arresting/torturing far more, did NOTHING to stop the protest in Egypt. Or killing all the buffalo stopped Bob.
It is not illegal in California for a retailer to see a person's ZIP code or address, the ruling notes: For instance, one can request a customer's driver's license to verify his or her identity. What makes it wrong is when a business records that information, according to the ruling, especially when the practice is "unnecessary to the sales transaction."
So, ASKING for the zip code itself was not wrong, using it for marketing was the wrong bit. Had they kept the zip purely for the transaction (as proof for later challenges making it necessary for the sales transaction) and NOT used it for marketing, then everything would have been okay.
Once again, slashdot fails to read the full article and jumps all over the place with its conclusions.
The company would have been just as wrong if they had used their credit card information they get back from the CC company for marketing purposes. This is about using information from one set of data in another set of data without permission being given.
And it is ALSO okay for shops to ask you for your zip code for marketing purposes as long as it is clear that is what it is for. You can just say no. In Holland at least companies put up a sign telling you what the request is for.
Yeah, they tried that. Then we told them we just won't accept credit cards then, they backed down VERY quickly.
Got to love the "free" market. CC is barely used here, PIN payments directly from the bank are the vast majority of legit deals. In fact most shops won't even deal with credits cards full stop.
Maybe it is time for American merchants to develop an alternate method because having had to read up on CC transactions, it is pretty sure who profits most out of it and it ain't the customer or merchant.
Government and the control of society is about more then absolute evidence, it is about state of mind.
There are those in society who wish for private industry to have greater control of society without an elected body having the right to control them. So be it, but do we then just accept this without questioning what kind of mentality these self appointed power brokers posses?
This is not a criminal trial, it is a hiring process and during such a process I want to see from your past and current behavior how you are going to act in the future. So, if people propose banks like Bank of America should have LESS regulation and LESS government oversight shouldn't we first examine whether that is a good idea?
No, them telling us it is a good idea is NOT good enough fool. And THIS leak shows exactly what the mentality of the Bank of America is. No, not because there is proof they did this but because they EVEN considered it.
That requires some advanced thinking but basically goes that for some thought crimes are indeed crimes. Some people/institutions should NOT even be allowed to consider certain things.
The Kenedy assassination is a prime example of this. Was the CIA behind it or not? Doesn't really matter, it has been proven beyond a doubt that senior CIA officials had plans to assassinate the president of their own country. THAT is enough of a crime in itself. If the protector of democracy even dares thinking of killing a democratically elected leader the crime has been done.
The Bank of America by even being involved in this have shown that banks can not be trusted to be open and that private businesses will fall all over themselves to supply services to lie to the people. That means we have once again been shown that banks and private industry need strict government supervision.
That is what this leak shows.
Not some timeline of crime to be fought over in court to sentence some individuals but the whole sale condemnation of private business as being unworthy of trust.
But of course, you are a fool and trust the bank because merely considering lying isn't bad at all... no no, let them work without oversight I am sure that when something really bad happens they will tell us honestly...
They see it as simple as this. My debt is 1000 dollars, my food bill for the year is 1000 dollars so I stop eating for a year and all my troubles will be over... eh yeah... they will.
China is not just catching up, it is not in danger of going in front, it is already there. The Chinese just build the high speed railnetworks that break record speeds over record lengths and order a new train model in the HUNDRETHS. They are re-colonizing Africa often rebuilding the same railroads the Brits used for pretty much the same reason. Get their hands on the amazing amount of raw materials they are going to need and raw materials the US will find it far harder to get.
People tend to think of the US as this superpower but forget that pre-WW2 they were nothing. America entered the war late and we all know what happened when they finally were forced to enter. They got their asses handed to them. It wasn't until the Americans got their act together and ramped up their massive potential that things turned around. And then America fell asleep again under Reagan with the same exact attitude that had led America to become a sitting duck to Japanese expansion. Except this time it is the Chinese and the Chinese need not fear the waking of the American giant. It is to fast asleep and the Chinese are pretty damn big themselves and growing rapidly.
The world is changing and America is watching the Super Bowl on its fat asses believing the bread and circusses. Saw some of it on the BBC and my god it was pathethic. Linking a silly sport with world events? How self congratulitory can you get?
The US is living in a dream world where its economy is in tatters, production is going down hill, it is involved in wars it can't win, has more people in jail then any other country only being beaten per head by ruthless dictatorships and can't even build a 2nd rate rail network...
It is truly sad because unlike most people who see China beating the USA I don't think that is good thing for anyone even people in China. The Chinese government ain't nice and we don't want to see a Chinese run Britisch empire reborn thank you very much.
So America, get of your fat asses and show some of that can do spirit. Do you really want to be known as that place where road bridges are falling apart and everything is made in China?
Then this clown should have released his code for free because he based it on something that apparantly belongs to the public. But oh no, he filled it with DRM and put it up for a sale on a DRM riddled platform.
Don't claim information wants to be free if you are trying to sell your rip-off.
Basically your entire rant is this: The fast majority of cars are boring grey boxes on wheels used for getting from A-B so there is no market for special after-market kit...
Oh wait.
Or: The fast majority of people just want their cheap food in a restaurant to come with a toy, so there is no market for fine restaurants that do not ask you to supersize your order.
Oh wait.
Basically, just because a segment of a market is not the entire market doesn't mean that you can increase your earning by going for the whole market. A three star restaurant will NOT do better if it goes for fast food instead.
PC owners are NOT just PC gamers with a cheap computer, they are people that don't want to play PC games which is why they got a cheap PC instead of a decent one. By trying to aim my product at the cheap end of the market that ain't intrested I only risk loosing the real market segment that wants my games.
It is not like there isn't a bottom PC gaming industry, they produce the simple title that mothers buy for their kids at the super market for a tenner and that are universally craptastic.
And their revenue shows it, bottom feeders producing shovel ware surviving on the thinnest of margins. It is a living but is that the way forward?
As for their being more console owners then PC users with a decent graphics card. Sorry but that just ain't true. What people forget is that a decent graphics card doesn't cost all that much, about a hundred bucks will get you a more then capable card. The top end is for people who want a million frames per second. For those satisfied with a mere 30, lesser cards will do. Or we buy a 300 dollar one and have it last for a while.
The proof? Machines that can run a The Sims 3 with full set of user made add-ons are apparently plentifull considering the sale figures for The Sims 3 addons but they require a far more powerfull machine then many hard core titles (really, try it).
The 600 dollar card is for the ultimate fans, but far less will still give you a card barely pushed by todays games and it is only so long before people will stop buying them if games do not continue to advance. And advancing your game is about more then just pushing the latest game. Game engines are SOLD and cutting edge tech on the PC makes it way to the consoles sooner or later. If you don't push the PC engine now, will you be ready for the next generation of Consoles?
Also don't forget that many a console is gathering dust. There are many Wii's but the software sale figures show a distinct gap. What is your market? A crowd that doesn't actually like to play games or the game lovers that want your game and every bit of DLC you can produce? Size of market is a very poor metric for determining earning potential.
No, wait. Don't bother. It is bad. Very VERY bad. So amazingly bad you actually got to watch to admire the sheer horror of the train wreck.
Now some FF fan will come by and defend it because it is different. So is having 11 fingers, you are still a freak. Different isn't always better, sometimes we do things a certain way because they work.
A simple example is chat channels. Most MMO's do them IRC style. It works, has worked for decades and we all know it. Not FF14, it uses a system they named linkshells which basically means you can't talk to anyone until you talked to them... the manual doesn't explain any of this because that would be "hand holding" accoridng to FF fans. Some websites try to explain it but seen that fan web sites are made by fans they don't explain it very well.
The entire control system is clearly designed around the limitations of the controller. But to sit you have to type/sit and to stand you can then click on an icon which opens the menu were the stand option is or type that command as well. No simple press forward key to stand-up.
Sitting has been done in a LOT of MMO's and they ALL implement "walk to standup" it is natural. So FF doesn't do it.
Being a firm PC gamer and therefor a western game maker I have only played a few console games and have come to believe that Japanese game producers can't produce a good UI if their life depended on it. See the countless DS games were the music can't be turned off.
But hey, PC makers hopefully will wake up and realize that there is no more money to be made in making the desktop faster. What am I going to use a 6 core for anyway? How many photoshop users are there? Really dual core is fast enough for all my office needs and I don't really ever run out of 4gig memory on a desktop either.
But PC games sell the top end hardware. Do you think a person buys the Black Editions of a CPU for Office? Hell no. That is gamer territory. So better make sure there are games out there that need it.
But hey, luckily there is the MMO industry which is happy to soak up every CPU cycle for a game totally designed for a Console yet uses more memory for the installer then any console has...
It is an amazing market. Everyone knows consoles are the next market for MMO's yet nobody can actually manage it, not even a console company.
Do console companies forbid their developers from looking up the console specs? No keyboard for chat, no memory to load an open world with RANDOM elements (for the console owners, GTA deals with an open world by LIMITING the random content namely the cars you encounter. A MMO can't do this, it can't limit what outfit the next person you encounter is going to wear. If there are 100 people in your vision all with different outfits, they all got to be loaded and that takes memory which consoles do not have)
Come on Intel, AMD, NVidia, realize that Windows gaming IS the place that sells your hardware. FUND proper games or become REALLY good at selling cut-rate budget CPU's anyone can make at a huge profit margin.
Mint changes all the browsers google search settings to redirect it to a branded Mint page. For ad-revenue. Problem is that the page is horribly broken, missing essential google features and wasting screen space with a Mint logo.
Unified services in existence LONG before Twitter and facebook.
Mail, ordinary mail, you know, like on paper? It was a unified service with me being able to send a letter from anywhere in the world to anywhere else in the world and it just getting there with a locally bought stamp. People don't think this is amazing anymore but you can buy a stamp from your tiny village post-office and it can travel the globe. In days gone by people mailed each other more then once per day and mail was delivered several times per day as well. All this long before computers were invented.
Email? Again, a unified system because I could mail from any mail program to anyother mail program and it would just get there. But apparently nobody ever used it. Nope. Totally unheard of, I talk to a geek and know he is a true geek for having heard of email... nerdy stuff that.
Usenet, the amount of data far exceeds that off all social sites put together and has done so for decades now.
As for checking facebook 10-20 times a day... so less then once per hour? My email checks every 30 seconds. I cut down.
Facebook is only a world changer to kiddies who never saw anything before. If you were older then 12 you would remember MySpace. That you don't says a LOT about social sites.
They have been around before, locked into themselves and disappearing when the next big thing comes along. Email? SMS? usenet? Mail? still here.
People like you will probably never get this because you are to self-centered but the original design of the Internet was to route AROUND damage. Not through it. The Internet kept working just fine around Egypt. In military terms this would have meant that if a region had been nuked, other regions would still be able to communicate AROUND it. It was NEVER meant to keep working in a nuked area. Is the word "around" really that complex to comprehend?
With more traditional infrastructure, if you knock out a hub, ALL communication stops. If I blow up a gas pipe, the flow of gas stops, there is no way it can re-route the gas through different pipes automatically. The Internet can. Simplest proof? Cable modem goes out, mobile internet dongle takes over without me ever noticing (except for the providers mail stating "we own you now")
Since the cutout of Egypt did not affect Israel or Libya or indeed anyone else, the Internet did its job of routing around damage.
This is the idea behind laser powered flight. Rather then carry the energy (fuel) up with you, you fire the energy at the craft and save a lot of weight. The reason they want to use a laser and not a fuel hose is that nobody is willing to untangle several kilometers of hose after the launch and put it in the rather large garden shed.

Really, go and cry me a river.
Anonymous is not a group that exists on 4chan in /b/.
If you are that compulsive about checking your email, you have your phone with you. And your phone will already be checking your email for you.

Not really linked perhaps, but what else can you say when movie plots become really but to think of a movie based on reality?
And what are you posting this from? A PC?
So you already had all those extra bits eh?
And a 250 dollar card will last you two years or more.
But to sit you have to type /sit and to stand you can then click on an icon which opens the menu were the stand option is or type that command as well.
Bloatware ain't just a Windows issue.
The Internet works, your brain does not.
But hey dude, lighten up. This is slashdot:
"stay the ever-loving hell away from women" is our motto!
I agree fully with your argument. You are not part of a sustainable future, please kill yourself. The world will be grateful.
