This was exactly the comment I was about to make, but decided it wasnt worth my time. Funny this got modded troll. Wish I had mod points do I could mod it where it should be - funny. The iPod be damned, Apple is still irrelevant. Heres a hint Apple folks, they don't make one button mousing devices because its "elegant". They make them because its "intuitive". Translation: They think you are all idiots and cant figure out how to use more than one finger at a time.
As I mentioned above, the Americans assumed that capitalism would lead to more open government. Now China is (for example) beginning to compete with the US for oil, many are having misgivings about this.
Well, call me an optimist, but I dont think this will be true in the not so distant future. We are already looking for alternatives to oil, and regardless of what the mega oil tycoons think I feel it WILL happen. In a capitalist society the only thing more powerful than the corporations (they own the government, you see) is the general population. If WE decide, en mass, that we want something else it will happen. The problem is waking up that mass of people, and I think that OPEC has given us the necessary catalyst, raising oil prices.
To keep this on subject though, I have my doubts about the relevance of the Chinese dragon processor. From my understanding, generally, the Chinese population is too poor to afford American PC parts, and we Americans wont accept the Chinese processor as a replacement for our higher performing parts from Intel and AMD (not going to say the Chinese wont be able to catch up and surpass them, but my bet would be on no). Perhaps some sort of embedded processor IF it were cheap enough, but then theres plenty of cheap embedded processors here as well. As for patent issues, does anyone think this processor is being built with export in mind? I sure dont, I think it is primarily so they can sell it at home without depending on the US. They want to be technologically independent, and I understand this. American (or any other country) patents are only valid if the Chinese government decides they are, which they dont.
I use external USB hard drives with 400GB storage per drive. Swap drives at locations weekly with a spair set. Fast no reaccuring costs and does the job. Tapes are too slow, online is too slow / cost can be a lot for a lot of data.
I just have to ask. How is this post off topic? Sure, it isn't about online backups specifically, but it is a very reasonable alternative TO online backups.
Thanks for the clarification, I knew there was a capital in there somewhere for bytes instead of bits. I knew someone would smack me around if I was wrong on the details.
Ouch! You got me, I was at work this morning when I typed that and was quite busy (excuses, excuses). That IS a typo, as you can see further along the post that I did spell grammar correctly at the end.
At least I wasn't correcting the original grammar in this post.
This does bring up a question though. EVERYONE is entitled to a mistake, especially when it is obviously a mistake and not lack of knowledge, right? Should people just let every butchered post pass unchallenged and never try to help other posters learn some basic written communication skills? Are people who do correct others expected to be 100% accurate and perfect? Why are people who correct these things always subjected to retaliations, instead of just taking the knowledge and moving on? Why do people feel it necessary to defend their spelling and grammar when it is obviously wrong?
Um no:) 300 baud is roughly equivilent to 300 bits per second (300bps).
300kbps (lower case k) is up on my cable, 300kilo bits per second (not bytes per second, that would be 300k / 8) or approximately 38Kbps, uppercase K).
I hate this aspect of American contract law. If two people are in a contract that I know about and I encourage one to break it, I am guilty of a tort. How the hell am I guilty of a tort; I wasn't a frickin party to the contract. Contracts are just agreements between two people, if I had no part in agreeing I shouldn't have any responsibility under it.
That is pretty rediculous, but you have to keep in mind who makes the laws here in the states. Its not politicians, its lawyers. Or at least politicians that are former lawyers. Or owned politicians, are there any other kind? Only a crooked lawyer (again, any other kind?) could conceive of such a rediculous law.
There's a different between Som31 t4lk1ng li|3 th|5, and someone making a typo in a post where everything else is perfectly readable and understandable, without ever having to struggle or reread the post, as is the case with the post in question here.
From the context, I can only assume you mean that you had to struggle to read my post. If this in indeed the case, you should revisit reading class. I think grade four should about do it.
Well hello mister grammar nazi. Does your self-esteem reach new heights by yuour adding nothing of disthinguishable value to message boards on the internet?
Actually he is adding something of "distinguishable" value to message boards. Since this is a written communication medium, the poor grammer and spelling often exhibited by posters makes that purpose much more difficult pursue.
While I understand that sometimes the person in question is from a non english speaking country and that english is a second, or third, language, my guess is that is rarely the case. I think most of the time the poster is just ignorant. I mean ignorant in the literal form, not as an insult. (Although I am sure the ignoramus in question would take this as an insult, and thats fine.)
Sure, someone will probably find some small grammatical error in this post, as the Slashmob often will. This will in no way change my point.
People are idiots. (Ok, that one was purely for insult purposes, so sue me:)
P.S. I am aware that I am posting in response to an AC, one who will likely never see this response, and if they did would likely just dismiss it out of hand.
It does if you are trying to hide proof that you did something you are claiming you didn't do. I dont know anything about the original case, not really interested. However, this is what it sounds like to me, them just trying to get out of something.
If we punish with the death penalty those whose actions upset the lives of many many other people, and also cost lots and lots, then there is a long list of people who qualify. CEOs who rob pension funds, for example. Various politicians....
Heck, we wouldn't be able to put many virus writers to death, we would be too busy slaying lawyers.
Oh come on, they have to do SOMETHING with that corporate politician they bought to justify the expenditure. Aren't successful corporations judged by how many politicians they own? You can't get more without using the one you have. It takes politicians to make politicians. They are like corporate money. "Hey, thats a mighty cute politician you have there. I will trade you two of mine for that one."
Theres a problem with your increased efficiency theory. If the person did choose a lower wattage lightbulb, then less light would be available at the street, thus less people would read by it. This would actually reduce the light on the porch. I think the guy should leave the light bulb alone!
OK, you are just making shit up here, and I'm calling you on it. I grew up in the Bible Belt, full of all-kinds of self-righteousness (of all kinds, from the "You're only good if you go to our church" to the "You're only good if you're ecumenical" in my own church), and never, ever did I ever hear even the slightest intimation of the suggestion of the thought of anyone doing something like this. Not in the big mega-denominations. Not in the extreme non-denominational churches. Nowhere in-between.
How can you accuse him of making that up just because YOU haven't seen or heard of it? Its a big wide world out there and I hope you aren't implying that you have seen it all. While I haven't personally seen the specific situation he cited, I was raised southern baptist (and as soon as possible rejected it completely) and thus spent way more time than should be considered healthy around the hellfire-and-damnation crowd. I could see them doing something like this. The people I dealt with really and truely let their preacher think for them.
Which is more likely? Someone is going to force religion on you today or someone is going to try to enforce no religion at all or make a slam at them for being religious? The latter makes up for 99% of all religious conversations yet they all claim the 1% is the problem. Here's a thought. Leave them alone and let them live their life rather than trying to force a ban on religion everywhere
Heres a hint. Making up numbers does not legitimize your point. In my experience, but then im from northern florida, the vast majority of the time its someone trying their best to convince me that I am going to hell because im an athiest. IF it were just a matter of "live and let live", that would be FINE. However, the religious zealots are most of the problem (again, from MY experience). I cant remember ever hearing of atheists assaulting religous people's person or property because they had a god sticker on it. However, I see and hear the reverse all the time. Happened to my wife (back when she was just my girlfriend). She had a pro Wicca bumper sticker and some god nut busted her windshield and wrote nasty stuff on her car with a magic marker, stuff along the lines that they should bring back witch burning. Kind and wonderful people, they are.
Thankfully in Florida they are trying to pass a bill that states if you are in the left lane and you arent passing the car in the lane next to you, you could be pulled over for impeding traffic.
Sure, we might as well add a few MORE rediculous nonsense laws to the books, we certainly don't have enough.
Since you are so in favor of this wackiness, answer this for me. What if the right hand lane is actually doing the speed limit? Technically, and this comes from driving class that I had to go to for speeding (really didn't realized the limit changed), you aren't allowed to speed to pass someone that is going the speed limit. After all, it IS the speed LIMIT. If that person is going as fast as you are allowed, theres no reason to pass them right?
And when im doing 70 which is 5 over the limit (yea, im a bad bad boy, I realize how this contradicts my last statement:) and passing the guys in the right hand lane, why does some jerk come flying up behind me at something like 90, squeeze right up behind me and just glare at me like I am some kind of fungus?
I've been down too many highways where all two or three lanes were occupied by people doing the speed limit or slower. Nobody could pass them since they were all near each other with no room to get around.
The result? Traffic gets backed up needlessly and transit time increases.
This is often one of the reasons why we have minimum speed limits. You are simply an impediment to traffic if you go slow.
Wow, you must be one of those guys that like to blow by me when im doing 5 over the speed limit. You know, the guys weaving in and out of traffic because all of us inconsiderate asses would rather not die in a flaming wreck of a fireball.
Since you are one of those guys, any chance you could clear something up for me? What is it thats at the other end of your mad hurtling journey anyway?
Oh and as for this GPS thing, I think its horrid. Sure, it has some very very good points. I even envision a future where the cops can turn off the car of some drunk driver thats endangering innocent citizens as they flee. Whatever good this kind of big brother scenario can provide, is tempered by the huge loss of personal freedom we lose. I would rather remain free and find other ways to reduce or eliminate the evils this is supposed to solve. Trading loss of freedom for personal safety is a long slippery slope and once we start down it will very, very difficult to stop.
Ah get off your socialist soap box. I have many reasons for disliking the outsourcing jobs to another country. One big one is half the time they cant understand me and I sure as hell cant understand them. Also, like someone before mentioned its harder to prosecute when stuff like this does happen.
I will never understand why some people feel the need to scream racism at every little thing they dont agree with. I like indians just fine, as long as I dont have to try to decipher thier horribly butchered english when im trying to let my cable company know my internet is out. Sure, I cant speak Hindu or whatever, but then im not fielding tech support calls for them either. Thank goodness.
Sure, the builder should be dinged for shoddy workmanship, but what I gather from your post it sounds like you want to shift the majority of the blame TO the builder. That is wrong. The person who exploited the flaw should get burned with the lions share of the hurt.
Exactly. 100% Correct. Damn, wheres my mod points when I need them?
There will always be flaws in software designed and built by human beings; we are flawed as well. This does NOT give a crook the right to use it. If I accidently leave my window cracked a little when I leave for work, how does that justify the guy using that security flaw to go into my house and steal my hard earned belongings?
This was exactly the comment I was about to make, but decided it wasnt worth my time. Funny this got modded troll. Wish I had mod points do I could mod it where it should be - funny. If ever there was a troll, this be it.
It is less important where they are BUILT than where they are DESIGNED.
And it has been a lot longer than a few years since PC parts were built here.

Say... what?!?
This statement is so unbelievably false it should be held up until the end times as the ultimate in false statements. We have a winner.
Programming takes slightly more analytical thinking than browsing around for porn wouldn't you say?

I bet this IS Rick Lambright (whoever that is) trying to make himself sound all important.
