Everybody stop and THINK for a minute. All states are part of a bigger government. We need to find a small central/south American country or island that is in financial ruin, shouldn't be hard. Once a country is in consideration we need to speak to the government and see what they are willing to do to assist us in creating a successful technology park. They would need to grant us lifetime rights to block of land with stable power and telecom. They would need to offer bilingual people to translate and teach spanish. We would need to bring in business that would employ local people at a true living wage, and pay taxes of our true income at an acceptable percentage. We get to live our geekly lives in paradise, their government gets a nice boost to their GNP, everybody wins!

While I was in the infantry I once spent the month of August in Death Valley and I can tell you we NEVER hit 140, 127 with MOPP4 and kevlar is no picnic, but it wouldn't of phased this laptop. They don't have the high end horse power of the p4 laptop I am on right now, but knowing what these things can go through, they are amazing.
Question for you, do you think that the H1B has effectively solved the problem of the IT gap? I feel that I am in job competition with the world, which is good for everyone once you reach a high level in the industry. My concern is for people like my nephew who is having a hard time getting an entry level job in the field. In your experience have you seen people on the H1B's in these lower skillset positions?
thats a great book for an intro, if you want more info you can also read "internet routing architectures" by sam halabi or my personal favorite for all tcp/ip "routing tcp/ip volume 1" by jeff doyle.
Imagine this: two routers, each with a link to a remote site (ie T1 and a frame) each plugged into a different switch. If either router fails/reboots ect everything still works. If a switch dies the other router begins running as the def. gateway. If one wire gets cut or unplugged taking down a router the other routes. If one circuit goes down, data continues to flow. I have used HSRP extensively, it can save you from MANY physical failures and service outages when deployed properly. As far as having so many misconfigurations, get a new engineer. Cheers!

Its a mixed bag, the major hospital network I have been building up over the last two years has redundant systems for hardware failure. An application or stp problem on one vlan would require isolating and fixing the problem, no amount of spare gear can fix it. It happened nine months ago when a IT staffer wanted more ports on one vlan and powered up an old 5500 and uplinked it to the new 6500 at their core, stp crashed out the entire floor (per vlan stp, one vlan per wing/floor.) Since then the entire infrastructure team has been fired, the hospital feels it's better to have nobody around than a single person who thinks they know what their doing but doesn't. I am not heartbroken, my support calls have dropped by 80% and I can focus on building out their network rather than changing my configs everytime someone "helps me out."
it was taco who put up this story not neal, apparently he didn't get that memo... we should ALL send him a copy of the "two hour" memo along with his TSP reports!
Long ago, when I was first thinking of network security as a career field, I thought "in a few years there might not be enough work to go around..." It looks like it could be another record year.
I can't imagine why you would go so light on your baby. If you don't apply some preasure to learn how to read, type, and bash script in the first 6 weeks it'll take em years to learn! Our rule is simple, until you have compiled it for Gentoo (or LFS) you can't use it! Of course emacs will put you out of the will and on the street, but maybe I am a little militant on this rule... Everybody should stop babying their babies, our society is simply hurt in the process. Thank you.
you could load those games that don't require x like hangman, they might actually learn something! as an additional bonus as long as you run linx browser (text only) there is little need for porn filters (you might end up learning how to explain some dirty words, but no pics!) why do we think we need graphics to keep kids interested? I lost entire summers to my c64 programing I think it was a matter of challenge and interest. I won't presume this is THE answer, but why not run two boxes one like this for them to learn on, and a windows box for supervised time?

Hmmm, Here is the score as I see it (not an insider) IT market comes out of the flu strong, a couple real bang years where everone started a.com and needed to get to the purchasers, I'll bet booths were big $'s those years because there is only so much space. IT budgets were huge and we were all riding the wave making for great attendance. How much do you think you can command for 8x10 at a show with a dropping attendance (mostly of people with slashed budgets) when the hotels are constantly bringing up the price of space? I wouldn't be surprised if a bankruptcy lawyer convention could afford the halls this year... WOW! a little venting about the economy really makes me feel better!
I bet it was really more like this:
Today I am really excited since I am about to finish Castle Wolfenstein and all of the sudden the phone rings, some user can't get their email, distracted I lose my last character. Might as well play with this little piggy for a while. I check the excuse calendar "solar flares" oops that was yesterday, I tear it down to find todays excuse is... "Microwave Interference!" I say " hmm, looks like you are on mail server SIMON, and it is in our downtown office, unfortunetly we have a microwave link over there, and well it is snowing so you can't get your email today, microwaves simply flake out under adverse weather conditions." I make a note to myself to change the operator's voice mail greeting to explain this on the first good day of powder! I "clickety click" all files in the users home directory and change his password to a 35 character, random generated password mixing upper and lower case with symbols and numbers and give the user the "new support number" and I even convience 'em that lots of legitimate business are now using 900 numbers. I hang up, unplug the phone, and now I am going to take a well deserved wolfie break! Thanks BOFH for making me what I am today, cheers all!
I doubt it was a pppoe issue with the router since it started the applications/streams, likely it was a version bug combined with a reoccurring set of conditions (buffer size, event log size, nat translation tables, whatever.) I had similar problems with my netgear router until I upgraded the version. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think streaming mp3's and ssh packets shouldn't ever hit the mtu, if you had been downloading mp3's that would be a likely culprit. Congrats on working around the problem for yourself, sounds like a fine solution for the home user since you get to learn more about networking, internet, and an os.
MTU has turned into the bane of my existence, between atm header problems, VPN's which can't have their packets fragmented without blowing up their crc's, and voice and video apps over low speed links adjusting the MTU down isn't an option anymore, many times it is required. Maybe a site here or there won't display, but usually its downloads that die, like a norton update for example. If I reset the mtu back to 1500 then the vpn's drop and voice develops jitter or drops (using a vovpn as an example)but everyone can download their updates (and of course more importantly their mp3's.) My point is that allowing your ftp server to service a packet at 750 won't kill you or your server. How much overhead do you add by sending two packets at 750 over one at 1500 and how much bandwidth will you save? Until this problem completely disappears I will keep a copy of DR. TCP on my laptops, I believe you can free copies of it from Cisco (might need to be registered)
