is to seed the web with references flattering to yourself. Extracurricular stuff like all that volunteer work you did for that (made up) charity. Pictures posted on flickr (under a ringer account) of that banquet were you accepted the award for "salesman of the year" (or whatever). Etc., etc., etc.

The googlebomb it until it comes up on top.

Screw the hand wringing. Get creative.

Medical records are supposed to be protected in the U.S. (cf. HIPAA), and any employer who tried to obtain your medical records illegally would be in pretty big trouble if they got caught.

Court records are another matter. If your psychiatrist made a report to the court concerning your progress in a shoplifting matter, that might be part of public record if the judge didn't have it sealed. But in that case, your criminal record is going to be a much bigger deal than the psychiatrist report.

That's always been my problem with Groklaw. I find the articles educational when you take the bias with a grain of salt, but the comments are just too . . . autistic? They often seem to be in their own little world, and they don't take kindly to any viewpoints that diverge from their own. The slashdot hive mind has nothing on groklaw's.

That said, they are a terrific resource. Just avoid the comments sections.

I could even see where in game ads, properly done, would improve the experience. If someone where to make a Bladerunner MMORPG, it would seem utterly naked if there weren't huge electronic billboards.

However, what would be interesting would be top player endorsements. Imagine if you were the "best" (whatever that might mean in the context of the game) in a game, and your play was subsidized by wearing logos or having logos on your vehicle. A Nascar MMORPG?

    Unless it's for OWC!

I second your opinion. I've been buying stuff from OWC for maybe six years, and I've always been happy with both the products and the service. I have two of the "On-the-go" drives (FW 400s), and they've performed as expected and have even saved my ass at least once. I can't speak to USB or FW 800 versions, but the FW 400s use bus power without problem. These are great external drives if you use a laptop, and don't want to carry around a large external and a power brick.

They also have a mac-centric forum called Mac Resource Forum, appropriately enough, where the community is pretty helpful.

I've had the privilege of meeting Larry (the owner), Jamie (the manager) and many of the crew at MWSF, and I've been further privileged to have dinner with them all twice.

One further exceptional thing about OWC: Ryan Rempel, an OWC employee, wrote XPostFacto, which allows OS X to run on older Macs not supported by Apple. XPostFacto is open source, and its creation has been supported by OWC.
