I'll tell you what a non-technical manager needs... a few smart techies that he trusts. They make the technical decisions for him. He trusts their judgement even tho he doesn't completely understand it. As long as these techies are smart with their decisions and explanations he will succeed and will go on to make other non-technical decisions throughout the day. So, yes, a non-technical manager can be successful in a technical company. So long as his right hand men are technologically learned.;)
"[World of Warcraft] has also shattered all previous concurrency records in North America, achieving over 200,000 simultaneous players during the holiday period."
Um... this is just plain wrong. "Shattered" concurrency records with over 200,000?! The page linked below shows that Valve's Counter-Strike has reached a maximum concurrent user mark of 214,074. So, at over 200,000 concurrent users, WoWC has at best "met" or "slightly beat" Counter-Strike's record. Not "shattered".
I remain on Windows for one reason and one reason only: Games. Like many other geeks, video games have become my release (so I don't have to drink.. or hell knows what else). And not a one of the games I am playing right now could be run on Linux. Aside from games, I have all of the tools I need to "live" on Linux.. Internet, email, web programming, software programming.. everything but the games. This is precicesly why I keep an up-to-date and functioning copy of Linux on my drive at all times. It just so rarely gets booted. So unfortunate...
You're an idiot. Linus invented Linux and heads its development and direction to this day. If that isn't "Linux Proper" then there is no such thing. Give me a break.
"I need to restrict obvious illegal stuff and probably p2p to be safe"
I would cap their bandwidth but don't bother trying to stop them from using p2p. Their own computer is the loser here and as long as you cap their bandwith you wont have to worry about the traffic causing you or other neighbors problems.
but I would imagine that SCO will have even less luck trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the British industries and government than they would in the US.
"...also includes features like search term highlighting in web pages, auto-completing of forms, and a pop-up blocker."
Consirdering the fact that most every Internet related company has released their own toolbars with these exact features, do we really need to point them out anymore? Just the word 'toolbar' tells me right off that this is not something I need...
This is rediculous. This company is suing Google for crawling the web and recording images and information that have been stolen from the website in question by OTHER PEOPLE! They are suing Google because losers in other coutries pay the $25/month and then copy the images to their own site. Google's spider then finds them. Its not Google's fault that this site's customer's are misusing the site's content. Nor is it Google's fault that other people have decided to hand out their own passwords to the site.
Google is simply crawling the web... any legitimate judge will correct this pr0n company and make them go after the people who are actually cheating them...
Just another case of "go after the big guy cos he has more money that the little guys that are actually causing the problem". I hope the web site goes out of business and the sleeze bags go to hell...
but this sounds like a great idea to me! In fact, I've seen it happening in video games a bit already and I've notice the potential for advertising there. Its high time someone stepped in and organized this like Massive obviously has.
I assume they are referring to programming advertiser's graphics into the games rather than displaying them dynamic, somehow live. In this case it will be a blast to play old games and see their out-of-date but somehow historically artistic advertisements...;)
Do you mean "JavaScript heavy?"..I guess not. A9 works perfectly with JavaScript turned off, unlike Gmail which requires it. There certainly isn't any Java on the A9 site, unless they're using JSP pages or something.
Oh yeah... and the Pocket PC supports Microsoft Reader, Palm Reader, Acrobat, and most any other e-book format... I've learned that to build the e-book library I want I can't rely on one particular format.
My suggestion: buy an inexpensive Pocket PC like the Dell Axim X3. Or you can get a refurbished iPAQ 1945 at BeachCamera.com for $200, shipped. The 1945 is a better fit in your hand than the Axim, IMO, and that's important for an e-book reader.
Once you get the PPC, you'll find that you use it for much, much more than just an e-book reader, even if you're convinced that you have a device for every other task.
When you get to that point, visit us at pocketnow.com for news and reviews on Pocket PC hardware and software to make your PPC more useful....
...it seems to me (IANAL) that they should get to wait."
Of course they should. Its trivial. And they will get to wait, so long as the judge acts justly... I live in Utah and while most Utahns feel like the rest of the world does (i.e., that SCO is full of shit), I still worry that a Utah judge may side unfairly with the Utah company. This would be a complete shame and I don't think it will happen. However, you have to prepare for the worst...
I don't know about that. Looks like nothing more than Google with a different color scheme/style sheet. This isn't a new search engine, its a new (another!) reimplementation of Google's search...
I'm a Computer Science Pre-Major at the University of Utah and I can say that the engineering program at the U is up to snuff. This is why it is one of the highest ranking engineering departments in the nation. However, spending time at the U I have often thought about how most schools out there probably aren't doing as good of a job as the U is. I did attent a State College for a year before going to the U and it was certainly less effective, by a factor of 100! There are certain aspects of computer science which are the basis of the entire discipline. These are very high-level math and science ideas (or should I say math and engineering?). This is precicely where shools are slacking. But hats off to the guys at the U. I knew after just one semester that I was working with individuals that knew what they were doing. People who are interested in the technology and the knowledge behind the science unlike so many egotistic morons out there who "know more than you" because they went to [place name of ivy league school here].

0.5%?!?! Great! So, basically, my commission is being doubled!!!.... grrrr
I realize now that they may have been referring only to MMORPGs and I guess Counter-Strike might not qualify as one. A bit misleading.

Checkout Bluefish (http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/), its my Dreamweaver replacement on Linux and it takes care of all my needs.
Hmmm... Wise words.

Just a thought.

I would imagine a database of documents would be easier to translate than their physical counterparts.

this doesn't include systems that people build for themselves, which more often than not are built around AMD processors.
And I thought the single-channel coverage of the games was bad enough... this is ludicrous. Sad. And wrong.. What is this world coming to?!...
..."will also be compatible with older products and in fact will increase performance on those older products."
we'll see about that.
He has nothing left to do. SCO has failed. Their current cases will fall apart, albeit slowly.
