to realize is that in order for Debian to be taken seriously is that it needs to be upgraded to the level of commercial Linux distros. Its installer (I know everyone complains about) needs to be easy by default. The focus on stability while admirable IMHO is taken to the extreme where it almost appears that the distro is obsolescent when compared with the likes of Suse and Red Hat. Debian all in all still looks like a hacker OS. Show Debian and Suse from install to implementation and see which one a business type will choose. Companies are not going to choose Debian simply on ideological reasons. On a positive note Apt rocks, but now there is Apt for rpm.

  19. The best decision that Novell could make on Putting Novell's SuSE Purchase In Perspective · · Score: 5, Interesting

About a year ago I was discussing with my friends this very scenario. It was a great decision on Novell's part, probably IMHO the only thing that could allow them to rebound back to the forefront. If they use Linux (open source) as their desktop rather than relying on Microsoft to be fair players they will be able to make a better product for the desktop.

I remember when people thought of networking they thought of Novell. I took a Win2k class not to long ago and the only people that knew about Netware was myself, one more person, and the instructor. Hopefully that will change with e-directory on the back end and Linux on the desktop. Although any company isn't 100% idealistic, Novell is far more open standard minded than Microsoft will ever be.

  20. Finally..... on Novell Announces Agreement to Acquire SUSE · · Score: 1

Novell has woken up. I thought about this strategy years ago. It is obvious that M$ was making things difficult on the back end because they have total domination on the front end. Having Linux on the desktop will benefit Novell because they will be able to get under the hood of the desktop, and therefore their network OS will function better at the desktop.
