  1. Oracle are you watching? on Opengroupware · · Score: 3, Informative

We just purchased Oracle's collaboration suite for various reasons. One thing that Oracle needs improvement on is the web interface. Why, because it totally sucks! A high school web development class could do a better job. IMHO, what Oracle needs to do is borrow the code from OpenGroupware's web interface and then give back something. Just like Apple did with Safari/Konqueror.

Because lets say a customer just won't pay X amount of dollars for broadband. He or she can't afford it etc. With one more person they can. Now the ISP has a sale that they wouldn't have had. Up to the demarc the bandwidth is the same. The customer is the one who might notice a difference in performance as their next door neighboor is on a downloading spree. As far as the ISP is concerned they have made a sale and are still getting the full amount had the customer been able to afford the access and paid for access all by themselves.

What I can't understand is why these companies can't get their act together and come to the realization that they aren't going to be able to compete with Microsoft on their own? What there needs to be is a coalition of companies to offer an alternative solution. e.g. Novell, Sun, Red Hat, Suse, Oracle, and Corel should work together to offer complete solutions that work together. This is one of Microsoft's biggest selling points right now. They offer solutions that tie together with IMHO closed standards. Why can't the aforementioned do the same with collaboration and open standards?

It is a great Outlook replacement to which I have become addicted. I looked for bug fixes but I just didn't have the time to keep troubleshooting. I am mostly doing web, email, networking, some dev, so Linux is a perfect desktop for me. As soon as this bug with Evolution is fixed I am sure I will be on a Linux desktop. It is a self-imposed requirement that my contacts, email etc. are in one place to be synced with my PDA etc.Linux almost does everything I need it to do. I remeber years ago when I bought Win 95 how I wished I hadn't. I think by allowing "Test Driving" it pushes a company to produce a better product because it gives the consumer more choice as to whether they think it is worth their dollars.
