  2. Why? on Windows CE.NET Ported to Xbox · · Score: 5, Insightful

Kudos to the guys who did this, I'm sure it took a lot of work...but do we really need Windows CE on the X-Box? IIRC, Windows 2000 already works, and so does Linux. Is there any specific advantage to CE, aside from its smaller size?

  3. Sorting Algorithms? on Best Ways to Organize Bills? · · Score: 2, Informative

This really has nothing to do with sorting algorithms, unless you're using a database or something. No, you're talking about a very small data set (in CS terms) that you just have to organize in a way that best suits your needs. You haven't provided nearly enough information for anyone to make a serious suggestion.

Thank you. I hear this "argument" over and over on Slashdot, and I just don't get it. When I buy an album, it's because I know and like the band. Unless it's a real fluke, the worst case scenario is that I won't like 2 or 3 songs.

Buy what you want, think what you want, but please don't assume that everyone else thinks like you. Some of us Slashdotters *gasp* don't want to buy music online, especially not in a lossy format. We want the physical media (obviously without copy protection). And no, a cheap CD-R is NOT the same thing.

LFS and BLFS 5.0 are certainly two of the most useful, informative "books" I've read.

And I have to agree with those bashing Robert Jordan, even though I haven't read his latest pile of crap. WoT is a series that started out so amazingly good, then was ruined by its author. It's his maddeningly slow pace, and more importantly, the fact that every single one of his female characters (except perhaps Min) is an arrogant b!tch. They're all extremely annoying, some more so than others.

Not hard, at least for those of us with broadband. Even if you have mediocre broadband, is an hour so long for you to wait for an entire, lossless album? Gimme FLACs with a proper CUE sheet for $10 an album, and I'll start buying music online. Maybe I'm an audiophile, or just obsessed, but I refuse to pay for lossy formats.

  14. Crappy Patch on Open Source Firm Releases Patch for IE Bug [UPDATED] · · Score: 1, Insightful

The concept is great, but as others have already mentioned, the implementation is godawful. It submits every URL to a CGI script on their website then redirects you based on whether or not the URL is valid. This is incredibly bad, because: 1) Who are these people? Can you trust them? How about when you type in a FTP/HTTP URL that has your username and password in it? 2) What happens when their server goes down? Your web browser doesn't work? Again...nice idea, but wow. You really couldn't think of any better way to do it? Go get Opera, or Mozilla if you want a free browser.
