I've throught about that. I'm running an IBM thinkpad model T23 with 384 megs ram. I think this is the max it supports.

BTW, if you ran the same apps under crossover office you will see a drastic improvement in performance. Basically you don't have all that overhead (Windoze).

If they decide to move to Exchange 2000 then I would have used other linux products which support Exchange 2000 natively.

Crossover Office only cost $54 for a single license. Compare that to vmware which runs around $200 for a full end user copy. Don't get me wrong. Vmware is a fine product however my windows app needs are simple. I hardly need them thanks to Linux :D

I've been using crossover office for a month and already love it!

Basically I was not allowed to pop/imap into the exchange 5.5 server and have been running vmware with win2k/office. vmware is great however running win2k under linux was terribly slow. Now I simply run outlook under linux/crossover and life is good. Outlook under Linux is VERY fast!

I strongly recommend their products. I'll be keeping an eye on them in the future.

Reminds me of the last time I read a Microsoft commissioned study in detail.

If I recall correctly, it was NT 4 vs Novell 4. The study came out three years ago. Amusing thing was they disabled several features on the Novell server which were on by default and JUST happen to be necessary for optimized performance. Microsoft had optimized NT4 (things like tcp/ip window size were doubled for example). Things which were not defaults mind you.

The end result? NT wins by a landslide. Never mind that they had to screw the results by messing with the server settings. Basically crippling the Novell server.

I would be VERY surprised if Microsoft EVER did anything that didn't require tampering to get their desired result.

Oh and BTW, 5 year study with win2k? How many of you guys know anyone running win2k that long?

    Thought so.

BTW, we have just me handling 12 *nix servers. Not terribly difficult. Our Windows admins however spend much more time protecting their win2k domain from invaders while I slee^H^H^H^Hwork from home.

    Thank goodness for the internet.

First off, I wonder how well this would work against a properly setup Linux Workstation/Server. I've seen the messenger service on Microsoft systems used for this purpose. One of the reasons I turn it off on my XP system at home (ok.. I admit it.. I have a gaming addiction ::grinz::)

Secondly, while I think the DMCA is a bunch of crap, I wonder if this would get him to spend some jail time should he decide to return to the U.S. Getting past a firewall sounds like hacking to me.

It's happened once recently on a large scale. Fortunately it was away from human population. Next time we might not be so lucky.

As mentioned we recently experienced several near hits. The article mentions our odds are extremely low in getting hit. However our collision detection budget for NASA doesn't cut it. Last I heard we're tracking less than 10% of the sky. Think about it. We had another article on slashdot several weeks ago talking about another near hit we discovered 3 days after the fact.

There could be many more out there and we're just not seeing it.
