  4. Sleezy telemarketers on "Do Not Call" Violators Fined $1.2M · · Score: 1

I'm on the DNC list, and I've had telemarketers call me anyway with an automated dialer that does not give me the option of blacklisting my number. So, I punch one (or whatever) to speak to a sales rep, and immediately ask to be added to their DNC list. They immediately just hang up on me.

So they naturally call back again in a few months. Instead of asking to be removed, I ask to know what their company name is, and with whom I am speaking. They hang up immediately again. WTF?!

I know this is /., so yeah, we all hate ads... There is a possible upside though.

I'm a grad student, I do a lot of research for my classes online, and 90% of the papers I read are in PDF format. For the benefit being able to download these papers, I pay an annual fee for membership in IEEE & ACM to access their digital libraries. If they (ACM/IEEE) could recover their fees through showing ads in the pdfs, maybe I could forgo paying their membership fees and opt instead to download the ad-laden version.

Then again, who knows, they might try to have their cake and eat it too - by charging me a membership fee to access ad-laden pdf versions.

Every so often, the little "!" icon shows up to the left of a song that comes up in the random shuffle, and I have to go re-copy my files to the 323 from my linux system. The 323 is supposed to be for backup, but it clearly is not reliable enough for that purpose.
