You make it sound like it's bad for the "average comsumer" to get software pre-installed. Let go of the "I'm a hard core geek and I compile my own stuff and the rest of the world shoud respect that fact and do the same" attitude.

Besides that point, can you really compare the crap M$ included with it's OS and the quality apps that appear in Max OS X? Compare MovieMaker to iMovie. Compare the crappy picture viewer and it's little green arrows in M$ to iPhoto. WMP to iTunes? No comparison. Don't like it? Get gentoo and compile from A to Z. Otherwise, there are a few million of us that just want to USE our boxen to enjoy our music and pr0n, and don't want to read through a bunch of man pages or crappy O'Rielly books just to get something to work.

Listen... $129.00 is CHEAP for a *BSD 4.4 Kernel OS that I can use and enjoy and works without me having to become a vi expert and "tweak" crap until 4:00am. Most of you (Taco, what's the % of people with Windoze that read slashdot?) are reading this on a Windoze box, and the only "five nines" (99.999%) in the computer industry is the number of people who didn't pay for their latest windoze distro. -->Personally, I think S-type corporations are bullshit.

Here is why I disagree. S-Corp can be converted to a C Corp once in its life. So when you need to be big like Microsoft, or any size usually larger than 40+ people, you can be a C Corp and sell shares, etc. Calvin Kline is one example of an S Corp. Yeah, they make stupid adds, but their stupid S Corp is private, no talking head on CNBC tells them what to do, and they make SCORES OF MILLIONS every year NET.

Another great protection of S and C corp that a partership does not provide is a "veil of protection." Not perfect, but pretty damn close. If I mess up, you can sue my company , but you can't touch my assets in my bank. S and C corps are like firewalls for lawsuits. Combined with good "Errors and Ommisions" insurance, you are protected from everything except Tort (which is fraudulant lying).

Again, I'm not accountant or lawyer, but I get good ones to set the stuff up and always double check other peoples opinions with your own research in a good bookstore, of course.

Getting rid of lag on RTCW multiplayer is good, but MEDICAL, RESEARCH, and other life changing, usefull applications must take advantage of this.

And does anyone see the general public being denied access to this, because a DVD can be shared as easily as an MP3 today? I bet the RIAA would try to stop us slashdoters et. al. from using it. If they are starting to sue backbone providers, it's not above their heads to try it.

Either way, I hope geeks and others who love progress get it up and running. Good luck, Internet v2.0, because Internet v1.0 sure has turned into a pile of crap (and by crap, I mean DeCSS linking being illegal, anything to do with RIAA, and PopUp adds).

I did the Java programming route for five years in NYC. Fun, but even my bubble went pop and working as an S Corp has soooo many benefits. Shall I list a few?

    1) You are your own boss.

So why do I want a National ID card? Because right now, show a NY cop an out-of-state ID that is HORRIBLY fake, and he will almost never be able to reconize it. Scores of states (like 50 or something, right?) and scores of ID's all different. It makes no sence. With a standard, everyone would be familiar with it, and security measures would be better. They would! I know I know... "better like SSL assh0le" I might hear... but I would say "better like US currency". Imagine if every state had it's own dollar bill like it used to? Sometimes standards make a good base. LSB comes to mind. If someone gets smart and included eyeball biomentric (cause every other can be easily faked) then the system might work.

And if you think that the "feds" might get at your pr0n or your precious hard drive with a national id, it's nothing they can't do anyway already. I could see only benefits. What would a national ID do in terms of taking away freedoms? Nothing I can see, though I'd love to learn something new.
