  1. Why I can sleep at night... on Schneier Analyzes Palladium · · Score: 1
...because when PD starts spreading like VD, I can't WAIT for the covers of Time, Life, PC Rag, et. al., to read "Palladium Security Holes, Millions Affected."

Look at IIS and tell me that PD will not be as hole-icious as a good swiss cheese. The new Apple stores that are popping up will be selling 25inch iMacs with iTunes6 and 100GB iPods in a few years... and I SERIOUSLY, after so many years of Windoze, I might Switch(TM) real soon. I've been in the game, if your can call it that, since DOS 3.0 (saved allowance to get 3.11 if you can believe that! Little geek I was) and I want out. Soon, after Joe-Home-User looses his Citibank account cash because of some PD bugs and security issues, the general public will want to Switch(TM) too. Either to Mac or *nix, but it WILL happen. So I can't wait for PD to come out. I want a good laugh, and we are all gonna get it.

Good point... although getting a pound of Coke(TM) accross the border is a lot harder than downloading something from a P2P network, or getting it from IRC. But yeah, that risk will still linger, and it *might* be enough to make all non-Slashdotters run out and plop down cash for obsolete technology (CD's and DVD's, when compared to iPods and PVR's and hard drives full of divx than can be played on demand, etc).

Buy yeah, lots-o-risk can remain, and might be getting worse. Especially with laws that might allow the **IA to DoS our little boxen.

YES! I AM SCREAMING IN CAPS! Don't worry fellow peeps, this is what I believe and why I can now sleep at night. Think about this: They can't keep cocaine, extacy, pot, crack, etc off the streets at ALL. It is easier for a 15 year old to buy POT that it is for that 15 year old to buy alcohol or cigs at a supermarket.

No matter what laws get passed, copying programs will always be arround. DeCSS workes on the first DVD ever made, and it works on every one in BlockBuster(TM) you can find. No matter what they try and stop, we will always be allowed to download our South Park(TM) episoes and watch it when WE want, not just on Wed's at 10:00pm EST. We will always have control.

IF THEY CAN'T GET CRACK OFF THE STREET, DO YOU REALLY THINK THEY WILL GET THE RECORD BUTTON OUT OF YOUR LIVING ROOM! SLEEP EASY! :)

So seriously, someone tell me why, in 2010 (if not 8 years sooner) drug trafficers won't be using these things around the world for cross-country drug moving? The US coast guard is good at catching planes, but a model plane can fly in anywhere, as is practically "stealth" by comparison (size, noise, heat sig). With GPS worldwide, and even more accurate in USA (due to localized removals of accuracy-blocking) it can land on the beach at 3:00am for a pickup. NUTS!

In order for them to have success, they must have a standard. Imagine EVERY dvd player having a different standard? Just having 3 standards with DVD-RW drives is making hell out of that market. This is the point I'm trying to make: once they decide on a DRM and put it in millions of homes, they can't turn back. Not for 1/2 a decade at least, anyway. Once the devices start appearing in stores, users et. al. grab the *fix* and it will work for years and years. Example, DeCSS worked the day it came out, and it STILL works on a DVD you can buy today, and will work on DVD's for YEARS to come.

And Slashdotterz are not the only ones who will know to pop onto Sourceforge and grab the *fix*. How do I know this? I've seen in schools kindergarten kids (5 years of age) using Dell Laptops and Instant Messaging and Internet Exploer. I'm proud of having used Z-Modem prototal and BBS's at age 10, but get ready, because a generation of uber-tech-savy consumers is growing up and when little-missy-8-year-old wants to watch Disney on whatever device she chooses, little-missy-8-year-old is gonna fuck!n find a way.
