  1. The way I remember it, on Microsoft to Charge for FAT File System · · Score: 1

IBM came out with the Disk Operating System first.
I still have a factory copy, manuals and disks of IBM DOS 1.0....

I recall Micro$hit coming out with a DOS around 3.x, I think it was the AT&T 6300 that I first began seeing MSDOS shipping with. MSDOS 3.1 I think it was.

We were loading IBM DOS 2.1 on 5160's w/10meg hard drives long before we ever heard of Micro$hit.

As far as I can remember, MSDOS never released a 2.x DOS. So, who invented the FAT system? I would lay money on it that IBM did.

Know M$'s history of ripping people off though, this comes as no suprise.

You're guarding an armored car. Another man approaches you wearing all the correct uniform and regalia, he evens looks familiar to you, you've seen his face at the armored car company. He has the password of the day.
Can you REALLY trust him? How do you know that he's really who he says he is? And even if Bob the guard really is Bob the guard, how do you know that Bob the guard hasn't just all of a sudden decided to slip a few $$ in his pocket when you aren't looking or just knock you out from behind and take off with a sack of money?

    Traitors ALWAYS work from within.
    Who do you trust?
Do you trust people you've never met with your computer security or do you take it upon yourself to handle your own security.

If one computer gets comprimised in a "trusted computing" system, the game is over. Don't trust anyone or anything.
Machines are easy to fool, they can't think.

The only SECURE computer is one that is melted down into an ingot of pot metal. THAT computer can't be comprimised.

  10. Free DVD players? on Embedded Device Manufacturers Ignoring GPL · · Score: 5, Funny

If SCO is selling embedded licenses for $29 per device and the DVD manufacturers are RETAILING them for $29 at Wally World then they must be giving them away for free.

When you consider all the middle men and middle-middle men that handle the unit from assembly line in China to the isle pallet at wally world, each handler marking up the unit 100%, or at the very least, 50%, (and figure in shipping costs too!) the cost to produce a DVD player is most likely in the less than $1 per unit range. And if they paid the SCO scam of $29 per unit, they would be losing a LOT of money real fast.

It's in their best profit-interest to ignore the GPL and do what ever the hell they want. If they get sued they can fold shop, change name/address and be back to cranking out new players the next day.
