Maybe Jakob is colour blind because I find it difficult to believe anyone commenting on usability who is worse at web design than me!;-)
I find the two equally sized columns on his site quite confusing. Its difficult to tell which one to look at to find the information you want (and there is always the question of why there are two columns in the first place). Wouldn't it just be much better to have a smaller category bar and then a detailed information part beside it?
Alt-tab works better under Windows then the MacOS equivalent.
Like hell it does! Cmd-tab on the Mac works far better than Alt-tab on Windows. It doesn't bring up a massive list of open windows for a start. Much better with the App list. Secondly, and even better, it can be navigated by the mouse. This is the way I almost always use it and it is much much faster than hitting tab multiple times. When I use XP daily I'm always trying to run the cursor along my list of open windows with Alt-tab.
The MacOS Maximize button dosen't maximize to full screen like I would expect it too.
The maximize or zoom button on the Mac makes a window size to its contents. Just try it on a folder in the Finder. I simply cannot see why you'd want a window with one tiny item in it to go to full screen size. Zoom is far superior to Windows maximize. Using XP at work every single day is terribly frustrating because of this.
The fact that its an "all new iMac" line hints at these models being G5 based. I don't see Apple completely redesinging the iMac just to release another G4 version. This would mean another complete redesign before they go G5. IBM seems to claim that the 970FX can run at very low power consumptions and is even suitable for a laptop. I am almost certain that these iMacs will be G5 based.
Its amazing to see Apple actually pre-announce a product! This is virtually unheard of, espessially for something as important as the next gen iMac. It looks to me like this pre-announcement is the result of some terrible mistake in predicting when all parts (PowerPC 970FX maybe?) would be available.
Tiger will be release 9 - 12 months from now. Those cards will be relatively cheap in that time frame.
That won't exactly help those eMac, iBook, PowerBook and iMac users who can't upgrade. Oh well I think its time for me to go and order a new G5 2GHz. A real shame I can't afford one of those 30" displays!
The new advanced video technologies (core image) seem to have longhorn like requirements:
ATI Radeon 9800 XT
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
ATI Radeon 9600 XT
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
NVIDIA GeForceFX Go 5200
NVIDIA GeForceFX 5200 Ultra
Seems some current Mac models will not support this! You can bet there will now be users who think that 10.4 will not run on their machine just because core image/video does not. They just won't get the advanced new graphics.
While I think that putting racist remarks on a website is wrong I think making it illegal is worse. If someone really feels that strongly about something then the government has no right to stop them. This is what freedom is all about. Sadly some people don't seem to realize this, especially in the US where they are saying that anyone criticising the Iraq was is anti-freedom. The truth is obviously quite the opposite: anyone calling these people anti-freedom is in fact anti-freedom themselves.
I have to agree with you here. Both the good points and the bad. There is simply nothing better for browsing deep file hierarchies than the NeXTSTEP style file browser. Hopefully Apple will be adding some more features to it in Tiger.
I seriously doubt that SCO will still exist when Sun gets round to opening the Solaris source. Then again I doubt that SCO will survive the rest of this year! Their rediculous claims will be proven to be rediculous in court soon.
Amazingly there are around 15000 (yes fifteen thousand) murders in the US every year. Most of which can probably be attributed to shootings. Now the UK, where firearms are illegal, has usually under 1000 murders per year.
If we compare this to population the US has around 290 million and the UK around 60 million. That puts the US murder rate over three times that of the UK. I think the facts speak for themselves.
The article is wrong about the iTunes browser. It has no relation to Safari whatsoever other than being made by Apple. iTunes is not based on WebCore (nor does it use HTML in fact). SafariTunes seems to be a really common misconception among a lot of people.
Give these guys a thesaurus! What do they think the "kind" column is for in "view options"?
Evidently this reviewer is not the most capable computer user in the world. It seems that his computer had some performance issues too. My 450MHz PowerMac G4 can easily rip a CD to 192Kbps AAC audio in well under 1/2 hour. However maybe the Windows version of QuickTime is less optimised... Also saying that MusicMatch has better controls than iTunes is simply laugable. I know two PC users who have moved from MM to iTunes and neither would ever consider going back.
I really hope that Apple do not release another G4 based PowerBook. Although I am pretty doubtful that this rumour is true.
The 166MHz bus in this thing is hardly going to be able to feed a 1.5GHz G4 CPU since this poor bus performance already cripples the current models. At least it seems they have got the L3 cache back. That should at least make things a little better.
I think Apple is more likely to use these faster G4s in eMac and iBook models rather than in PowerBooks. I think the iMac will also go G5 soon too.
Yeah and I think we are better going somewhere where there is no sulphuric acid rain, not extreme atmospheric pressure and a a lack of a surface temperature high enough to melt lead. Makes the thin atmosphere of Mars sound quite friendly in comparison.
That Dell thing looks just like any of the other generic MP3 players out there. It has nothing like the scroll wheel and excellent UI to distinguish itself like the iPod has.
From what I've read this "exploit" only happens on startup. So for most Mac users, who leave their PowerBooks in sleep mode, this has no effect whatsoever in a place like starbucks.
I think the NeXTcube was probably more influential than all of these systems. It was the first computer to trash the floppy drive, it had high-resolution display, the first good object-oriented environment, the first desktop unix, built in networking and many other things.
It would be interesting to know exactly why they have picked an IBM chip rather than Intel or AMD. I wouldn't think the IBM (PPC?) chip would be more cost effective than the Intel/AMD but you never know...
NASA should be forced to do what is needed to advance the space program beyond LEO. This, in my view, involves a few obvious steps:
1) Kill the shuttle immediately. The shuttle is a dreadful compromise from the Reagan era that should never have been man-rated. Its uses solid rocket boosters for god sake! This is the craft responsible for the current state of NASA. Its a large and highly complex ship that basically goes nowhere. Kill it before it kills another crew. Put these '70s space planes in museums like they should be.
2) Accept that people are going to die in the space program. There is simply no way that this can be avoided. Precautions can be taken, within reason, but people will still die.
3) Push as much money as possible into building a new manned launch system. Something simple, cheap and reliable. If this means building a modernised version of the Apollo CSM then so be it.
4) Push for Mars. This is the obvious objective that NASA should have had for the last 30 years. This is what the successor to Apollo should have been. You develop a spacecraft to go somewhere and not just fly round and round in circles.
The Mars system, whatever it may be like, can be assembled piece by piece on the ISS using unmanned medium or heavy lift boosters and the crew launched on board the new OSP. I assume the Prometheus project will be what eventually pushes the Mars ship...

Hey we've being given an iSync SDK this year. You can't have everything! ;-)

Its also twice as ugly though.

I wonder if the lower power PowerPC 970FX used in the Xserve has superior performance to the ordinary 970 used in the PowerMac G5...
;-)
It would also be interesting to know if the 970FX has suitable energy saving modes and a low enough power consumption to be used in a G5 PowerBook
I think it would be more "This is one small hop for man"
I suppose this could be a pretty serious hole if your running your DHCP server on a Windows box! Maybe that was the point of the article ;-)

As much as it pains me to say it I think WMA would be more useful to the masses that Ogg.
What would also be nice is support for some sort of compressed lossless codec rather than using huge AIFF or WAV files.
It would be interesting to know exactly why they have picked an IBM chip rather than Intel or AMD. I wouldn't think the IBM (PPC?) chip would be more cost effective than the Intel/AMD but you never know...
Why is this moderated as funny? It seems far more insightful to me.
