hmmm... well if stories don't have flaws, then what's your explanation for things like director's cuts, special editions and reduxes of movies? isn't that an admission that there were mistakes in the originals?

Because the storyteller doesn't always get to tell the story the way he wants to tell it. Just look at, for instance, Close Encounters of the Third Kind (with the exception of the going into the spaceship bit). There were big bits that Spielberg had to take out because of running time or because the studio didn't want it. Also look at Star Trek II's Director's Cut, or the Directors Cut of ST:TMP (which has alot of effects shots done that the director wanted to do, but just didn't have the time when the movie was first made). While sometimes the Studio's preferred version of the film has it's own merits over the director's vision (for instance, the beginning of "Pitch Black"), sometimes it doesn't (compare and contrast the Director's Cuts of "Chronicles of Riddick" and "Daredevil").

(About the whole sci-fi films becomeing action movies and Michael Bay's lack-of-talent, and Vin Diesel).

IMHO, Bay's (from all 3 films I've seen - "Bad Boys" 1 & 2, and "The Rock") an okay director. The Bad Boys films were enjoyable, because Will Smith and Martin Lawrence wre funny in them, and big explosions didn't hurt things too much. And, frankly, The Island can only be an improvement on it's source material.

And I kind of thought of the whole Riddick series (especially if you ignore the Theatrical Cut of Chronicles of Riddick and count the Director's Cut instead), as sort of being Conan in space. (Think about it, of all the people with ray-guns and "gravity guns" or whatever the Necromongers were using, the one who does the most damage uses, almost exclusively, knives.)

But now that I've got that out of my system, I can get to the part where I agree with you on something. Yeah, TV needs a break from new Star Trek (by all means, keep re-running DS9 and TNG, and the last season of Enterprise). My Generation has grown up in a world where Star Trek has always been on TV. We need a break, so that Berman and Braga can retire or move on to other things. A series can survive this, fandom-wise. Just look at Doctor Who! Just so long as there are novels with new characters (or lesser characters, as the case may be), and (hopefully), the bookstores will keep them on the shelves, fandom will endure.

Now, keeping MST3K fandom alive and growing. There's the toughie.

I stopped buying PC Gamer after reading their review of the PC port of "Silent Hill 2".

The first paragraph of the review stated the reviewer's unending dislike of Survival Horror games. Now, while I hadn't gotten around to playing Silent Hill 2 yet, I found that very first paragraph marred the review for me. I found the review to be less about the actual game, and more a rant against the genre of Survival Horror games in general.

A similar thing almost caused me to cancel my subscription to GameNOW. This was back when Sushi-X was back on the roster. Now, I remebered Sushi fondly back from the EGM of the early 90's. However, his reviews of Kung Fu Chaos and Soul Calibur II just irritated the hell out of me. The review of Kung Fu Chaos was less about the game and more attacking the game because it was a comedic martial arts game. Likewise, with the review of Soul Calibur II, it was spent attacking the game because Todd McFarlane had anything to do with it.

In both cases, I wanted to know about how the game played, how was the camera angle, how were the controls, etc. Instead, the rant overshadowed the content. Not cool, not cool at all. As it was, GameNOW went under, and Sushi did not make the jump to EGM. I will still remember fondly my memories of Sushi-X, but I think of him now as the magazine reviewer equivilent to Hulk Hogan, great back in the day, but don't put him back in the ring anymore, because he just doesn't have it.

I do know a few good attorneys.

A while back I had to bonk heads with my local school district because they were not living up to their obligations under my IEP (I have Asperger's Syndrome). We got an attorney who specalized in IEP law. While there essentially enough time left in my schooling at High School (I was a Senior) for the full knock-down-drag out fight to get them to live up to the agreement (and we did not necessarily have enough proof to convince the judge - the official minutes and reports of the previous meetings were kept by the school district), we did take them to court to get them to let us tape record the IEP meetings. We didn't win the suit, but that and some rallying at the School Board meeting got the policy changed (Previously, there was no policy, which the person in charge of the Special Needs division took to meen they did not have to let Parents and their Advocates tape record IEP meetings, the Board Meeting got the policy changed to Explictly permit parents to record IEP meetings).

Why is this modded insightful? Every time one of these threads comes up, someone says this. Every. Single. Fucking. Time. If anything it should be modded "Redundant".

Anyhoo, a lot of the stuff the RIAA puts out bites, but there are some geeks, some of whom post on Slashdot, who like some of the music on an RIAA affiliated label.

Likewise, just because music is independent doesn't mean it's good. 99% of everything is crap. That means music that's on the radio. That means independant artists and labels too.

Besides, I haven't heard about any local "independant" group that isn't metal in some form or another (Death, Christian, Heavy, whatever) or punk. Frankly, I don't like metal, I prefer something with a melody. And I can't find it in the independant scene. And I don't particularly like punk (With the exception of the Ramones, the Clash, and "I Hate You" from the soundtrack of Star Trek IV).

Catch: What if there is a band signed to a label that you like. It doesn't matter if it's U2, or Bon Jovi, or Def Leppard, or Jethro Tull, or Rush. They're signed. And if they put out a new album, you're frelled.

That's the whole problem with the whole "ditch the RIAA and all their artists" thing. Some people like some of the bands that have been signed.
