WHOA. Those shots look frikkin' awesome! What are you using? I'm using Gentoo, and while my fonts look nice (better than WinXP, IMO), those are just...astounding!
My only problem with fonts is OpenOffice.org does it's own font stuff, which looks like crap, and Mozilla, which looks like crap as well.
Still, PNG will probably be better for synthetic graphics like screen shots, where JPEG2000 will be better for natural images.
Actually, it is the other way around. I bought IrfanView's JPEG2000 plugin ($9, I think - well worth it), because, after some testing, it seems that JPEG2000 works better when there are LESS colors in the image, quite unlike JPEG in my experience. I had this drawing, grey pencil on white paper, scanned in at 1200 DPI. Around 400 MB. With JPEG2000, I was able to compress it to around 2 MB and you could barely notice the artifacts. Same with desktop screenshots. I just tested it with a 1024x768 Notepad window full of text. 2.2 MB uncompressed, 27 KB compressed, with no visible quality difference.

Hell, I've got an Athlon XP 2100+ (T-Bred-B core, AIUHB stepping), a ThermalRight SLK-800A heatsink, and a ThermalTake SmartFan II. Even overclocked to a 2400+, that baby still runs at a sweet 40C, unless I'm doing MPEG-4 encoding.
Hmm... have you ever seen the Ghost in the Shell movie? Or, to a lesser extent, the anime series? They tackled a lot of these questions... with some interesting answers.
kazaalite.com is a evil villain pretending to be the real KaZaA Lite site. Why evil? They act like they are the real site, and give no credit to the real people behind it. They also run anti-ad-blocker.
For reference, the real site is here. KaZaA Lite 2.1.0 is an excellent client. Now if only they had error checking/correction...
1) The taskbar is probably the most broken thing about Windows XP. I have tons of responsiveness problems with it, and moving things around is pretty much completely broken.
2) Windows 2000/XP memory management just plain sucks.
There's a few things you can do:
First of all, turn off system hibernation. Most people never use this, and not only does this free up hard drive space equal to 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have, it cuts down on a lot of unneeded disk chatter.
Second, if you have 512MB RAM or more, I highly recommend turning off the swap file in Windows. Yes, that's right. Even if you are nowhere near 100% RAM utilisation, Windows absolutely insists on paging things out to swap. After turning off the swap file (and hibernation) on my Athlon XP 2400+/512 MB Dual-Channel DDR machine, the XP interface is easily twice as responsive.
KDE is still better, tho. Imagine that... an X-windows based interface faster than Windows Explorer...:P
Except I do read newsgroups and message board, quite a bit, and I have heard about that. I have the latest BIOS, and have tried every BIOS in between, and some hacked ones. And nothing works.
Or if it doesn't like your hardware. At all. In spite of hours of messing with it.
To be fair, yes, I have found Windows XP to be quite stable. I have an ASUS A7N8X motherboard and a Voodoo 5 5500 PCI video board. In spite of everything I have tried, whenever I try to shut down, instead of stopping, I get a BSOD in the nForce2 AGP drivers. WTF?
I proudly use this version of Windows XP, and I've never had any problems with Windows Update. I even use SP1. Maybe your friend was using the infamous Devil's Own key?
You forgot Avril Lavigne. ;)
Thanks - I'll try that.
Also, someone mentioned here that the font problems with OO.o should be fixed in 1.1.

Except for the fact the K-Mart is going out of business, so there won't be any more blue-light specials.
Sure, look at my sig. I like to think of it as a public service, not cheating. ;)

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Definately.
Neither. It is public domain.

Not in the least.
who the hell is Kathleen Fent? With a name like that, I'm sure the entire red army has visited her orifices.
Ahem... Kathleen Fent is CmdrTaco's wife.
