"When you go to Dell and click through as a home user vs a small business, the prices are different for the same machine!"
Yeah, and my residential phone line costs $25.00/month while my business line costs $120.00/month. There is no discernible difference in service level between the two.
WTF Verizon?

in life, the world, the universe. In everything actually...
"I fail to see how the cable companies are double dipping but this seems to be a very common misconception around here."
Sigh. I'm old enough to remember when cable TV was first rolled out. There were NO commercials. It was touted as a subscription-based alternative to over-the-air, advertising-supported programming.
Didn't take too long for greed to take over. Now, the only non-commercial channels are the premium ones, like HBO, Showtime, etc. - and they're all busy advertising themselves between shows.
I see the same thing eventually happening to satellite radio. The siren-song of advertising dollars is just too strong to resist.
My favorite button on the remote control is 'mute'.
Agreed - which is why I won't buy one at any price. If everyone votes with their dollars, the world can be changed. However, too many people rush to buy the latest & grea... oohhhh, loook -- shiny!!
Well... if you buy paperbacks at Half Price Books and the average cover price is $7.00 (USD)... you'll end up with around 235 books. That would last me at least a couple of years.
Even purchasing new from BN or Amazon, I'd end up with about a year's worth of books.
These e-book readers are a relatively expensive solution in search of a problem IMHO.
"Not every state has a sales tax; Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not...
Ummm... Washington has a sales tax. Perhaps they are confusing us with Oregon? Although our friends to the south have a state income tax while we do not.
Also, 50-7 is still quite a few more than 30 - unless I woke up on Bizarro World this morning. In case which, above statements all wrong by me!
Let's hope not. Best to keep the kernel small and let the specialized tools, (like Samba), do their job as modules or separate applications for those who need it. Those who don't use it won't appreciate the kernel bloat.
I read the parent post as making the point that this should have nothing to do with the Patriot Act. Obviously, it's a crime and should be punished as such. I suspect, on the surface, that this is a case of stupidity in action on the part of the perp.
Still, aren't there already laws in place to deal with this without invoking the Patriot Act?
I respectfully disagree... Chuck Norris would still need the knife. Bruce Lee would not since he was way more of a badass than Chuck. After all, who always won when the two fought?
Even 'hard media' like CD's and DVD's were recently reported to have a much shorter lifespan than originally advertised. But at least with a modicum of care, (keep away from fluctuations in temperature, silver side up, etc.), they last for years.
The songs I've ripped to computer are mirrored to no less than three hard drives on separate computers - just to prevent what happened to your friend. And it's all ripped from CD so it's not like it would be gone forever if I had a crash. I just like the redundancy because I value my time. It took a long time to encode 300+ CDs to Ogg...
Hmmm... perhaps this will be a new niche for the insurance industry? 'MP3 insurance'.

Easy there Anonymous Sparky - you might want to work on your reading comprehension skills a bit before you go spouting off...
For one, I never used the words 'Death Tax'. For another, the estate tax was what I was talking about - and it's still in effect, as far as I know. But you're right that it's being raised to ridiculous proportions. In recent years, I know it was $600,000.00. Without looking it up, it's a good bet that it's nearing $1,000,000.00 with the GOP running things in Washington.
I vote with my Mute button. It's really quite easy.
"Most London streets have "look left" and "look right" painted on the road at the crossings."
Well yeah, but it's a foreign country so he might have trouble reading the signs.

but we already know the answer is always 42.
Always.
... but there was another PKD story that portrayed the same tech first. Of course, that one was turned into a crappy movie starring Ben Aflac!
If only it had had Cuba Gooding Jr. in it - he's much better than Ben Affleck...
(did I say that out loud?)

And Bookpool ** has it for virtually the same price as Amazon.

Why don't they just implement the fairtax and be done with all these other convoluted ideas?
You're an Asshat.
Yes, that's with a capital 'A'.
Yeah. I still think they should consider changing it to OSJLA - The Open Source Justice League of America.
But I'm not convinced that Linus, Andrew and the rest of the OSDL folks running around in tights and capes would be a good thing...

Bah. Not if one of us had a laser pointer to blind him with!! :-)
I already do. I have some of their titles, but they were all bought a while ago - and all were purchased off the used shelf.
My money has spoken.

Texas Ranger indeed. Norris is teh ghey.
Oh yeah? If that's true, then why don't the headlines ever read, "Psychic wins Mega-Lottery!!"? ;-]
I think you mis-spelled 'Benign Object Obliteration Mechanism' (B.O.O.M.) ;-]

Don't laugh - it's not even remotely funny.
Because then they wouldn't be brats, dummy.
