    Why WOL? Why not use a ultra low power unit, set to start VNC or whatever on modem ring. Perhaps set it up to something like a dialup script, where it expects and the phone sends certain tones in order for authentication.

    Get a local dialup isp. $15-20 per month, multiple mail boxes, etc. And just about every one uses simple expect/send login scripts.

    ... is that the classic Quake/QuakeWorld engine really started the ball rolling for mods, and is/was responsible for some of the things we take for granted in these games, like CTF (Thanks Zoid and Threewave for helping me waste sooo much time playing - had a blast) and the original TeamFortress.

    Yup. My mom bought a used LaserJet II from a local business that was closing. Took it in for a cleaning, etc. and the diagnostics said it had printed over 2 million pages. Still going strong.

    No need to search... on each Dell, there is the service tag number. Go to support.dell.com, look it up, and hit the downloads page. All the right drivers, versions, etc. by type (video, audio, etc) and OS. You can also look up how the system left the factory, etc.

    We use Dell OptiPlexi here at work, and I see very few problems with them hardware wise that isn't fixed in a few days. Software wise, we just make our own images and ghost 'em out, so I don't know what kind of install job Dell does.

    There was a posting here on /. regarding educational pricing and educational versions. $25 for the WS version and $50 for the ES version, with more CPU support than the regular ES version.

    We project in one of our labs using a similar unit onto a painted wall. We just had to find the proper flat white paint. Looks good, no "sun bursts" or areas of intense light from various viewing angles...

    I do all the training, etc. for online courses (both fully online and web-assisted). I also get the pleasure of deciding to stay with our current system, or upgrading to one of a few choices. This is at the community college level, so I'm not sure who or what type of people to contact at larger institutions, but most all have an educational technology department (not teaching - supporting).

    Works great. We don't install it on the machines, instead we setup a machine, make an image using the boot disks to net dump it to the ghost server, and then either burn to cd to manually do single machines or we broadcast it to a whole lab.

    Installing stuff for Ghost? Ours runs completely off floppy - either the client or the server.

    Been posted before too, but in response to other stuff, like changing the license for the Linux kernel they are distributing.

    Every person who owns copyright in the kernel or other GPL based software they ship needs to slap them with a cease and desist. Show them how much the IP in Linux there is, and how people are willing to protect it - Just like they are trying to do to IBM.

    I agree. I have no stereo in one of my cars and its gonna be hard to get one in there - 6v electricals, So this type of cd/mp3 player and some cheap unpowered PC speakers do the job...

    Also, when traveling with my 3 y/o daughter, I find it much better to ript & burn her nappy time music, Raffi, etc. so she can listen on the plane, or easily in the hotel room (via the same cheap PC speakers I use in the car).

    OK, the above have some valid points. Run the 5 qualifying heats on some other course, with representative terrain, etc.

    To even the playing field towards economics, award a small amount of bonus points for certain budget limits.
