Probably something like a drive that needs to be spun down, etc. before being removed but the machine will still perform without having to power everything down.
It sets it's locale information to countries I don't live in. Freshly installed stands nearly a 50% chance of not running. I spend more time downloading patches and updates for it, than I do for my three Debian boxes, without caching packages on the network.
What are you fucking up then? I've never seen this happen in about 30 different full installs. Maybe you're buying shitty hardware; XP finds bad memory pretty well and memtest86 confirms it.
Engineers with rigorous formal training are usually the first to admit that they are not scientists. Engineers with sloppy minds and little formal training think they know it all, or think that what they know in one area is easily transfered to another completely different area.
If you the thought occurred to you that these words might apply to you, then they probably don't. If you're sure that they don't apply to you, then perhaps they do apply.
The last statement struck me, and I'm not an engineer by an stretch. My reasoning is, the longer I live, the less I know. And I don't have a problem with biotech, or bioengineering but I think at some points in our technological development some checks and balances need to be in place. Not necessarily government ones, but probably more peer reviewed ones. I can see science outweighing most things in terms of sheer power, at the same time I think most scientists, engineers are concientious people. I'm buzzed. This post caught me, I hope it makes some sense.
The difference between cell phones and TV's is that one you use in the privacy of your house and the other you feel is fine to yak away in a grocery store line seemingly oblivious to the rest of humanity. The next time I see some asshole blaring his TV in a store line I'll probably say that TV's suck too...
I don't know what you are talking about, he was asking legitimate questions. Asking Powell about his job experience is totally related as was actually getting to grill a public servant about his perceived cronyism. Like the thing about Oprah, he said there wasn't a double standard, but if that isn't then I don't know what is. Stern never called him a moron or anything like that, if asking him some tough questions is rude well then I guess he's rude but give me a break.
Social Security is for people who think they know how to invest. I don't know how to invest, and judging by all the bankruptcies here in the US, the people paid big money don't know how to either. Investment is a form of gambling despite what a broker will tell you. At least with Social Security there is some kind of guarantee.
So do those keychain lasers ruin your cats eyes? I use one and until I read the Laser Faq in the article I wouldn't have though there was enough power to do much unless you sat there and pointed it into the eye for a while. So is there a safe way to use it, or is it best to give up?
So your point in this whole thing is just to trust the goverment, because we're too dumb to understand what's happening behind the curtain?

The point is that it works and is obviously not worthless.

If advertising is meaningless, then the people who pay for it during the superbowl are complete fucking morons.

Ever drive a Yugo?

By that same logic how would Linux users know then either? Maybe they are all infected....

Didn't Microsoft just post record earnings this quarter though?

Or should we deal with those also?

Maybe her brother should have had pictures of boobies on his Dangerous album and then he would have appeared really really dangerous.
You mean something out of the ordinary happened on live television? The horror. Isn't that why live television is so great?

That was very well put. I especially liked this:
... you've used it as an excuse to outsource our jobs overseas, now get used to us shopping overseas if we like.
Its called a global economy

I called my girlfriend a Quant once and boy did I get hell for that...

Maybe, but not in the literal sense. ;)

I didn't participate in this because it isn't worth the pain the ass for $10-15.

I'm betting a 1/4" out to 1/4" in would be sufficiently good to fool most people's ears.

I've used it with a Visa card and have had no problem.
