I've always thought tablets were way too expensive. They cost more than a laptop for something that does less than a laptop. Most tablets are about $500 and are about 800 MHz, and 1 Gig? of RAM, with 4 GB of storage. My currently notebook was $400 has dual core 2GHz, 4 GB Ram and 320 GB of storage. And can run full programs, not just apps. A tablet is basically a toy, that only fulfills a few small needs, but costs more than a computer. Sure its a little more portable, but still not small enough to put in your pocket. So you are left carrying a backpack or shoulder bag. At which point you might as well bring your laptop with you. The ones you can get from China for $100-$150 seem to have the right price point, but I wonder about the build quality. Plus most are missing out on key features like multitouch.
I've often wondered about this. Couldn't one start a shell company, or some kind of Co-op, "hire" all their friends or anybody who wanted to run their software, and distribute apps to basically anyone, completely going around Apple for app distribution?
I was thinking about this the other day. 3 billion base pairs, but each pair can only have 1 of 4 values, ACGT. If you chose to encode those letters in ascii, then each base pair would take up 1 byte. However, you only need to store 4 different values, so you only need 2 bits. a = 00, c = 01, g = 10, t = 11. So in each byte, you should be able to store 4 base pairs. There is no advantage as far as computer processing goes to storing the data in ascii. It's much more efficient in terms of computation to store it in binary format. which means that 3 billion base pairs would only take 750 Megs to store, or under a terabyte.
Well, According to wikipedia, Lester B. Pearson did fight in the first world war. Although I don't know if he's considered a war hero. He's much more known for being prime minister.
You could have bought a copy of SageTV for $90, installed in on a PC that cost $500 complete with dual TV Tuners, and not had to pay for a subscription to EPG data, because it comes for free with the service.
I very much agree. The movie studios should have been posting trailer and excerpts from movies on youtube since the beginning. We shouldn't need to watch the trailers that were taken via cell phone camera at the local cinema posted by Joe the Pirate in glorious 120p. It's sad that they've only recently started to come around in this. Think about how much they pay to get a TV commercial with the trailer to show during prime time. And they could get the same number of people to watch the ad for free Youtube. They'd be crazy not to post trailers on youtube.
Well, granted, the pill isn't 100% effective. And not everyone enjoys putting artificial hormones into their bodies. In some people it has some pretty adverse affects. Granted, there's lot of other options. I think that things like condoms are a much better option. Not only does it protect against pregnancy, but it also protects against disease. And it doesn't require anybody to modify the chemistry of their body.
If people are sniffing the data between your web servers and you have problems already. If you're using a proper switch, and not a hub, then sniffing actually becomes quite difficult, unless you have access to the wires or the servers themselves. If you're worried about your own employees sniffing passwords, again, you have bigger problems.
It's not whether or not they "could" do the job. It's whether or not they want to do the job. Men in general don't have the inclination to be teachers of young children. That isn't to say that none of them have the inclination, or that a man couldn't do it just for a job to do. Just than "in general" most of them do not. When presented with all the options, they opt for something else.
This has to be one of the biggest problems with console games. Not letting you completely remap the controller. On The PC it's almost a given, because there is no standard Joystick/gamepad. So because each gamepad has button 1 in a different location, it makes sense to make this configurable. On the console, most developers don't take the initiative to do this because everyone has the same controller. I think it should be done anyway. There's no reason why you shouldn't be able to remap all the buttons. I actually enjoyed Tony Hawk 2 much more on the PC than on the XBox specifically because of this reason. The buttons for jump and grind were unable to be pressed without moving your thumb, making it about 10 times harder. On the PC, you could put the buttons where they naturally should be, and therefore the game was much more playable.
Women/Men should not be 50% of any job, just because they are 50% of the population. They are different not only in body, so that men are better heavy lifters, but also in their intellectual abilities and what they want out of life. By your logic 50% of elementary school teachers, daycare workers, nurses, hair stylists, and house-keepers should be men. But that's not how the world works. Men and women are different. And therefore I don't think there is any reason why one should expect any profession to be exactly 50-50.
Lets have some affirmative action to get more women in prison shall we? The imbalance obviously proves that lots of female criminals are going unpunished, since genders are equal, by force of moral law.
THIS
I think i'm going to use this every time somebody brings out this affirmative action BS. People are different. Men and women have different abilities. Different strenghts. Different weaknesses. Different behaviours. There's no reason everything should be 50-50.
My mother is probably one of the most technically illiterate people I know. For example, she could not understand why the computer could not read the pictures off her digital camera after she took the memory card out. Yet she has no problem entering the password to get into our dropshots account to see pictures of the grand kids. People are quite able to do lots of "technical" things when they have the motivation.
One big problem is that a lot of companies have lawyers on retainer anyway. So it doesn't cost them anything extra when they want to sue someone for copyright infringement. However, most individuals do not. Meaning, when an individual wants to sue someone for infringement, they have a large cost of doing so.
Yeah. That link says 3000 people die each year from second hand smoke. So it kills about 0.001 % of the population, to put it another way, it accounts for 0.15 % of deaths that occur in the united states. While I really can't stand the smell of smoke, and am happy that people can no longer smoke in any public building anymore, I think we have bigger fish to fry. I never realized how bad the smell was until they banned it in most places. Now I can smell it when a smoker has been standing in an elevator on some trip previous to when I was on the elevator.
Also, I love to just throw my coffee cup on the ground when I'm done with it, just so I can show smokers how disgusting it is to leave cigarette butts all over the place.
This is what I think is stupid about android. It's touted as being "open" but you are left depending on the manufacturer of the device to upgrade the software. You should be able to download the software directly from Google and install it on any tablet. Without the manufacturer getting into the way. This should be a condition of allowing the manufacturers to use the Android OS. Making it user servicable. Otherwise what's the point of going with Android. Apple was a great step forward, allowing updates without going through the cell phone carrier, and having only software from the manufacturer. Android needs to go to the next step and make it so that everyone can upgrade their software, without going through any barriers.
They mostly do it as a reason of letting the player think they have a little control in the matter. Same as when you can pick your own numbers in 6/49, rather than just do the quick pick. Really your odds don't increase, but people think they are controlling it more, making them more likely to play. Too bad we don't have these sorts of tickets. Would make it quite easy to pick a winner every time.
In an infinite universe, there are infinite habitable planets. Assuming.00000001 % of planets are habitable, you multiply that number by infinity, and guess what, you end up with infinity. Any non-zero number times infinity, is also infinity.
I can't think of any serious browser that uses the IE rendering engine. Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Safari all use their own rendering engines. That covers 99.999% of all browsers in use.
Funny thing is, I'm only paying for 3 Mbit/s internet with Rogers in Canda. However, ever since I started using Netflix, my connection suddenly started going at 10 Mbit/s. And not just for Netflix, but for the entire internet. Maybe Rogers got some inside information that Netflix was going to be collecting and releasing this information, and they upped the speed of all customers who they noticed accessed netflix. The change in speed has lasted too long, even through multiple power outages, and was too close in time, I recall it happening within a month of when I started using Netflix for it to be a coincidence. Maybe it is a coincidence. But it seems a little shady.
But like I said. The MITM attack is hard. The difficulty in catching the password as it travels over the network is eclipsed when compared to the fact that there's probably and equally tempting SSH machine sitting behind the password "123456". Why bother with the complexities of performing a MITM attack when you can just depend on clueless users to supply you with an easy to compromise machine.
Funny, that's where I'm from too. There's people who use studded tires on bikes (non-motorized). I'm not sure if that's legal, or just completely ignored even though it is illegal, because there's no way it could cause damage to the roads. From what I've heard, it offers quite a bit of extra traction. Especially on ice. In Quebec it's mandatory to have snow tires in the winter, in order to increase the safety on roads. I think one big problem with studded tires would be that for the most part, there roads in the winter aren't much different than in the summer. Look outside today. Even though it's the dead of winter, and it just snowed last night, the roads (at least the main roads that are moderately travelled) don't look much worse than when it's raining. Sure there's a probably 7 days out of the month where the roads are terrible, and when 70% of the accidents happen, but we don't have the ability to change our tires quick enough when the road conditions change. Meaning we would end up spending much more than we already do for road repairs.
The point is, a lot of us can only afford to buy and insure 1 car. The cost of the gas is almost negligible. Whether the car gets 20mpg or 200mpg makes almost no difference in the total ownership and operating costs. So if you have a family of 4, and want to be able to carry some small amount of cargo, you're probably better off (financially) buying an SUV or Minivan, and getting by with just 1 vehicle over having to own multiple vehicles or having to rent a vehicle every 2 weeks when you need a vehicle with a specific purpose.

OMG I hate this behaviour. It's the first thing I turn off on any windows install. Big vector for viruses, plus it's just plain annoying.
