Exactly. SSL and Certs solves the wrong problem. It's hard for somebody to actually sit in the middle of your connection and do an actual MITM attack. It's much easier to just break into the database at the other end of the connection and steal all the data. The solution isn't to encrypt the credit card number, as it travels to the reseller. The real solution is to not send them the credit card number at all, and just send the retailer a signed cert from the credit card company, verifying that the transfer has been from the buyer to the reseller has been approved. The reason something like this didn't get set up, is because it means the retailer has to do a little more work to get things set up initially. We went with the easy method rather than the secure method in this instance.

I personally find that the standard version provides more than enough features for most developers, and costs a lot less than the full MSDN, and has no recurring subscription costs. You could go all out and get Team System, but it's a lot cheaper to just use the standard version, and go with SVN for source control, and NUnit for unit testing. Team System costs 15 times as much as standard, yet offers only a minimal amount of functionality over what you could do with the standard version + add-ons. Many development shops I've been to don't have MSDN subscriptions for all their developers. And it seems like the ones who do have it seem to enjoy spending lots of money on useless stuff, like government and uber-huge corporations.

What I find interesting, just from a quick glance at the chart beside the article, is that apparently parents only buy between 1 and 2 science/math items, regardless of the sex of the child. That number seems to be way too low on both sides of the line. Also, it doesn't seem to address the reason of why they are buying more math/science toys for the boys, or why they are doing more math/science activities with the boys. As a parent myself I can say this. You generally try to buy toys that the kid is interested in. You also try to do activities, that the child is interested in. If you try to buy toys that the child isn't interested in playing with, or doing activities that the child isn't interested in, then your wallet will be quite a bit lighter, and the child will be extremely bored. If on the other hand, you try to feed your child's interests, you wallet will still be light, but at least your kids will be having fun.

I'm a father of 2 girls, and although they have some tendencies that one might stereotypically associate with boys, such as playing with trucks, their behaviors are vastly different from most boys. You can start to see the differences at a very young age, and it has nothing to do with how they are raised. They've been able to find similar differences in chimps.

The biggest problem, is that there's a lot of people who have XP discs with no service pack incorporated. When you reinstall from these discs, and try to connect to the internet to download SP2, your computer is owned before you can even download the service pack. That's a major problem.

As far as cell phones go, I find the iPhone to be quite expensive, and the fact that it doesn't have buttons just annoys me to no end. There's no reason they couldn't put buttons on the back, or a long row of buttons along the side to facilitate dialing with some tactile feedback, and without having to look at the phone. With my current phone, I can dial my top 8 numbers with holding down a single key for a couple seconds. Can you do this on the iPhone? I' probably be happier with a phone that's just a phone, and an ipod touch.

Isn't that the whole point of the distro though? They should do some testing to ensure that packages they release with their distro are really up to snuff. Just because somebody decides to call something ready, doesn't mean it should be included in the distro. Different distros take different approaches with what they consider ready. Debian stable usually stays well behind the curve, while Fedora seems to be quite bleeding edge. I also think KDE should have made it really clear that it wasn't feature complete, and also not stable, but the distros shouldn't blindly pick it up and push it on users, regardless of what KDE says about it.

Just a shot in the dark here, but it might have something to do with the repository mirror you are using. Let's say for instance that it's an FTP mirror. Well some FTP servers return really weird directory listings that the system can't end up parsing, and there are a bunch of ftp servers that don't support the non-standard SIZE command. You see, FTP was originally meant to be done via a command line and be human readable. So they didn't put anything in there that made it easy for a computer to parse and figure out information about the files. So sometimes servers return unparsable data back, that the ftp code can't handle, and most of the time, it fails to get the size of the file. This is why for years, IE wouldn't tell you the size of the file you were downloading if it happened to come from an FTP site. I think it's specific for you repository mirror, because my copy of Mandriva 2008.1 shows me file sizes and a progress bar for all my updates.

Also, things like bittorrent encryption are only good for getting past your ISPs traffic handling services, and do nothing to disguise your identity from other people connected to the same swarm. Another possibility, since Tor is so horribly slow, would be to have encrypted communication of non-sense information between you and a bunch of random parties.
