This sounds like http://www.dirvish.org/, which is nearly as nice as the automatic file snapshots done by the "Network Appliance" fileserver boxes I've used at the last 2 out of 3 workplaces.
http://www.hitachigst.com/ Hitachi GST (Global Storage Technolgies, the former IBM Hard Drive division) sell the "Endurastar" line of automotive-grade-ruggedized 2.5" HDDs. They're not cheap, but they would fit the bill nicely. Assuming you know how to upgrade a Mac Mini's HDD, that is.
A similar $2.99, 12 inch, extension cord is made by and available from cablestogo.com, http://www.cablestogo.com/product .asp?cat%5Fid=914 &sku=03137 as opposed to the cablesunlimited one resold by tigerdirect.com (FWIW, as I dislike resellers in general).
I picked up 2 extra repair kits back when they were free (in case I ever found 2 more LJ1100's cheap to go along with the one I have). So far I haven't had to use any of the repair kits, and I'd be willing to part with the 2 spares if anyone was interested.
Actually, my 486DX4-100 could. Without skips or pauses. I just wrote a program to up the priority of a given PID (man 2 setpriority)... Of course, it made the machine painfully unresponsive for anything else, but it *was* possible and it sounded fine.
Not necessarily... it's possible to side-step this (e.g. freenet, uucp, bbs, wireless mesh) and create something "under the [corporate/govt] radar" so to speak. The results would not necessarily be pretty, but it worked a number of years ago--think "golden age of internet" era.
I too live in Bloomington, MN, within spitting distance of a Qworst CO (2400 feet). I ordered DSL. They signed me up with MSN. I canceled MSN. MSN sent me a DSL modem. I called repeatedly for a month, but Qworst refused to change my ISP to the one I requested (Sound Internet; they allow servers and run Linux). After a month of delays I canceled everything (local phone service, too) and ordered RoadRunner/TimeWarner. T1/802.11 anyone? BTW, next week I'm going to ask MSN where to send the bill for storage of their DSL modem...:-)
How about 100 points for half of the references without using google?:) Thek: Anne McCaffrey (sp?) Sassinak/Death of Sleep immortal rock creatures that grow to the size of M-class planets Ballybran: Anne McCaffrey Crystal Singer series (I'm ashamed I can't remember for sure how to spell "McCaffrey"... but I haven't read any of those fine books since I learned html in 96. Waitaminute... this is slashdot; nobody can spell:P)
Sorry to disappoint both of you... I stopped in just because it was on my way home from work.:P When I showed up the first 3 guys were already pondering the dearth of UofM students, including Ms Mysterious Some Woman. RE: Waving a penguin next time: doubleplusgood idea, stuffed optional--one serving of "open source" brewery nachos could feed a small nation!
(n)Curses, foiled again! we were at the first table in from the entrance until 7:15-7:20... I know it was uncool, but you could have asked the "greeter" hostess for the "Slashdot Meetup" like I did:) Too bad the guy with the "EFF" T-shirt didn't show up till later, we were all hoping to meet you!
Lies... and statistics: Attendance vs Time wasn't quite exponential, but probably the only time a bunch of/.'ers could be described as "Normal" (think Bell curve). Of 80 some listed, and 25 RSVP'd we collected a bar coaster of 18 nicks (I was AC #1 of 3 (now sporting my own shiny new nick!)). Conversation was lively, we had a chair-space overflow and took over a booth, and we even had 2, count'em, TWO attendees of the female persuasion show up! BTW, note to all the RSVP'd no-shows (including our host!) we know who you are and we hope you like being duct-taped to a tree next to a mosquito-filled lake!:-)

Axis http://axis.com/products/video/camera/index.htm has a nice line of network cameras that themselves run linux and a webserver to provide the picture. May be too spendy, tho'.

I remove the "power" and "print screen" keys from my "Sun Model: Type 6" keyboard.
So, what do we do with all the left-over grunts?
Why, we grunt a lot, silly.
In Soviet Russia, web browser innovates you! (Just combine the shocking game-console controllers with the keyboard/mouse...)
Well, they might be giants. You never can tell.
You must be new here. Welcome to Slashdot, please do not feed the trolls. :-)

Careful... if it gets dark you could get eaten by a grue.
Because they already built an 80MPG Taurus sedan: tied for first place in the 1999 competition and won first place hands down in the 2000 competition.
I'm still using my AMD 486DX4-100 with a 120 meg drive as an X-term you insensitive clod! :-) (And I still have 20-some meg free, too.)

How late did the rest of you guys stay? Having to get up at 5am to get to work sucks :-(
