Yeah it's a pain in the ass, and I prefer to code my site (above) by allowing things to deprecate in such a way that the site still works alright in IE; I also try to encourage my viewers to upgrade to something better. But obviously my home page is not a mission critical web site.

Slashdot doesn't use "Times New Roman." It uses absolutely no font at all. This means that your browser renders it using its default proportional font. Proportional usually maps to one of "sans-serif" or "serif," and then you can change your default sans-serif or serif font.

I'm not sure if this is settable in IE, but Mozilla, Safari, etc etc have these settings.

Personally, I use serif, and then my serif font is Georgia. It looks great to me. But feel free to use sans-serif and Comic Sans if it suits you.

I think you will still be able to download Firebird separately too, if you wish.

To be honest, it's all very complicated, and I probably have it wrong. I highly recommend you take a look at the Mozilla Roadmap. They clearly have a much better grasp of this than I do.

Now, everyone I know (tech savvy to end-users) -- my mom, my sisters, everyone -- uses AIM. After all, its what AOL users use. I guess someone uses it...

(Perhaps it doesn't help that I pretty much mandate that anyone who wants to talk online gets and uses AIM. Then they stick with it.)

  20. Re:Erosion of double jeopardy on Jon Johansen To Be Retried On Piracy Charges · · Score: 2, Interesting
    Dislaimer: IANAL.

It's not double jeopardy because double jeopardy is getting re-prosecuted for the same crime after being prosecuted/convicted.

If you watched the movie Double Jeopardy, you would know that the heroine (played by Ashley Judd) could not be retried and convicted for the murder of her husband (who was actually still alive) because she was already convicted (wrongly) and did the time for it. This allowed her to go after him, with lethal force and without fear of repercussions, in the movie. This is (amazingly) an accurate portayal of this concept.

However, in the US your 'definition' applies as well, as far as I can tell. (I doubt it is officially called double jeopardy, however.) Only the defense is allowed to appeal a conviction; I believe if overturned on appeal, it may be able to appealed by the prosecution at that point only. I'm going off my poor memory of a law class I took last semester.

The line from the Constitution reads,
...nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb;...
Interpretation is left up to lawyers, judges, and lots of other laws, I'm sure. Sorry, but I don't feel like doing any more research on this.

You contradict yourself in your post, saying you have to write down the barcode, but you can remember the data if you were to look at his barcode...

Contradiction aside, most people, and especially common thieves, would have no idea how to make a barcode. I personally know you can do it with some software, but I'm not familiar with any of it and have never done it. I do know there are several types of bar codes so that throws another hardball at you; you have to get the right type.

In this case, also, if this person lost his bar code, it's his video rental card. It doesnt exactly scream "this is the key to my house." *No one* is going to think its the key to his house. That. Is. Cool. Of course, if he doesnt have a copy or cant get another copy of from the video store, he's also screwed, etc etc.

On the other hand, if a thief were to somehow get your pin, I bet he would be able to remember the pin long enough to write it down, and entering it into your numpad is trivial.

I think its at least more secure then you give it credit.
