After this much eccentricity my family usually gives up, so no-one ever discovered that I only actually read the stuff before and after the alphabetical list of words. And they're amazed when I can read the phonetic spellings ("it doesn't say how to read them").
But most people want the useless eyecandy and redundant features. So that's where the money is. If all they did was improve Win98 from now until the end of time, they would still be fixing things a thousand years from now, but no-one would see any progress unless they added new features (whether or not they're useful).
There are plenty of things wrong with microsoft, but making an OS for 2006 that needs more resources than an OS released in 1998 is not a big problem. There's very little business in making up-to-date software for older systems (I know Linux can be made to run on older machines with all the current security and bugfixes, but the money is in new machines).
I dont need a special day to tell my mother or significant other i love them.
I agree; I certainly don't use Valentines day to tell my mother I love her!

James Woods was the only celebrity-playing-himself that was funny. Ever. All of the rest sucked. Most of the celebrity voice-overs that played characters were good. Now someone please contradict me.
Stephen Evans seems to have collected about twenty minutes worth of skimmed reading on the subject of SCO and the MyDoom trojan horse. Specifically, it seems to be beyond his comprehension that a single virus can be, and presumably was, written by a single individual. He says:
"There seems little doubt that SCO was targeted [...] because it has enraged many people devoted to the Linux operating system."
To me there seems little doubt that SCO has enraged a single rogue vandal, one person who is solely responsible for the damage wreaked by MyDoom. Any other ill will in the Open Source and Free Software movements towards SCO is simply justified anger at frivolous claims. It is unjust to tar every Open Source supporter with the 'hacker' (in the sense used in the article) brush.
Mr Evans goes on to suggest that SCO's case against IBM is because IBM uses Linux. SCO's actual claim is that IBM contributed SCO-owned code to Linux, thereby infringing SCO's copyright.
I feel I should also point out, in response to Mr Evans' "..zealots who believe that code should be free to all (open source)", that the belief that all software should be free is one held by Free Software advocates (such as the Free Software Foundation), but not by the Open Source movement.
I hope that in future Mr Evans will be able to distinguish a rogue from the generally well-meaning pack.
All of the code contributed by Mozilla Foundation employees or Netscape employees has already been relicenced. My understanding is that there's very little left that is only MPL or NPL.
...All of which is covered by my previous post. I said 'related' bug because it's not exactly the same (specifically, it's less insecure). I never said I prefered MS's solution to Mozilla's lack of solution, but I intended to imply that the time it took to patch was not the problem, the actual solution was.
The related bug in Mozilla, bug 122445 (no link since bugzilla refuses slashdot links) has been open for just over two years. How does it take the entire online world (who all have access to the Mozilla codebase) two years to fix this?
Horseshit. Religion in general is the biggest cause of social and mental retardation in history, and more wars and death and killing have been it's result, directly contradicting it's stated goals.
Well sure faith sucks and all, but actually the biggest cause of human death is malaria spread by mosquitoes. It's been responsible for an estimated half of human deaths ever.
It's been well known for decades - if not centuries - that we read words based on first and last letters and ascenders and descenders. Most words have few ascenders and descenders, so it doesn't throw us off too much, but some words do become illegible if too mixed up. In fact, I'd wager iglbilel is one of them.
I was recently looking for a new wallpaper for my desktop, to replace the tired Sniper Kitten that's been there for a while. It occured to me that the desktop is just so much empty, wasted space.
I think the task bar is necessary. The system tray is great as a sort of background taskbar, to hide the applications that you probably won't have to switch to too often. Everything that's been around for a few years should have a built-in clock.
On the other hand, the start menu and desktop are wrong. Or at least not necessarily right. What if you replaced the start button with an auto-minimise-all button, to get you back to the (new) desktop. It could be a toggle button that put all of your other apps back where they were when you're done on the desktop.
The new desktop should be divided into customisable sections, based on tasks. It would need to provide access to all of your applications. It should contain links to recently used apps, recently edited documents, most used applications. It could even contain syndicated news feeds, private messages from other users, or other new features.
I had intended to flesh out my new desktop idea, perhaps make a fake screenshot to show what I meant, but it slipped my mind. Thank you for reminding me; I may get around to it now.
I love the numerous links imploring me to 'Join Orkut', only to bring up a page saying " Membership to orkut is by invitation only." It's like yelling from your doorway to 'come on in', only to ask for a ticket at the door.
What the hell? I support open source, but you can't claim that a guy forgetting to do something is a software bug. There are plenty of real reasons to support OSS; don't make them up.
Of course it's also necessary to compare the total available heat energy in a candle (as in the maximum amount of heat energy it can create by burning), the total mass of air in the house, and the specific heat capacity of air at room temperature and standard pressure to see if it could release enough energy to heat the air by much. Who wants to do this calculation for me?
They were destroyed during the second coming of Christ.
Sounds like my house.
"What're you reading?"
"The dictionary. 's pretty good."
After this much eccentricity my family usually gives up, so no-one ever discovered that I only actually read the stuff before and after the alphabetical list of words. And they're amazed when I can read the phonetic spellings ("it doesn't say how to read them").
I works well in scrabble though.
"Go look it up."
"It's not in there."
"How d'you know?"
"I've read it."

You're right, releasing new software is so evil! We must stop them!

Shit! I'll put my credit card away then, will I? Curses.
I love the way all of the sex-related posts seem to assume that, since the guy's a geek, he's never had sex before.
You do realise that sometimes a couple will, um, like some of the same things?
"Okay, in the morning you can follow him around and watch him have fun, and in the evening you can have some fun."
Did it not occur to you to do something together?
BBC News has a response form at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/help/3281777.stm. For anyone who's interested, here's what I wrote:

Mozilla is in the middle of moving all of their code (with the permission of contributers) to a GPL/LGPL/MPL tri-licence. The Mozillazine article Relicensing of Majority of Mozilla Codebase to Begin Soon has the details.
Help me out here. Is it pronounced letter by letter or as an acronym? I'm told it's 'Skoh', but that just sounds about as stupid as it looks.

Hello my name is Mr Setag, and I come from... some place far away. Yes, that will do. Anyway I say we invest that money back in Microsoft.
You have an Alt-F2 key? Cool! I could really do with a Ctrl-Alt-Del key, actually (Win98 in college). ;-)
