Yes, I too am angry that we still have crap support, but if you paid close attention to their press releases and announcements, they never said that xfree86 4.0 would include support. They said that shortly after the official release date of XFree86 4.0, they would be releasing a full implimentation. Which means that we should be receiving our driver within 2 weeks, or I follow step 8.

Later this month, BeOS Revision 5 will be released, free for non-commercial use. Details are sketchy, but it does sound like you will need to be running windows in order to use the free version. (Kinda like a UMSDOS Installation of linux.) Wait until later this month to make your decision, download Free Be, and try it out. (Will only be about a 60 meg download.) If you like it, you might consider buying the OS.

Slackware went to 7.0 (its my distro. of choice but still the move was uncalled for).

I have to disagree with you there. To us linux guys, the move was unneccesary... but to the media and the newbie masses, it says "Slackware isn't 2 versions behind anymore." Now I'll agree that several major distro's haven't inflated their version numbers (Debian, Caldera(?) for instance) but that doesn't mean that lazy computer guys like me and the guys who created slackware should have to put up with crap. Consider the following quote from the slackware website:

Q: Why the jump from 4 to 7?

The following was posted to the Slackware.com Forum by Patrick Volkerding (Slackware Project Lead), at 21:43 10-10-1999.

I've stayed out of this for now, but I do think I should lend a little justification to the version number thing.

First off, I think I forgot to count some time ago. If I'd started on 6.0 and made every release a major version (I think that's how Linux releases are made these days, right? ;), we would be on Slackware 47 by now. (it would actually be in the 20s somewhere if we'd gone 1, 2, 3...)

I think it's clear that some other distributions inflated their version numbers for marketing purposes, and I've had to field (way too many times) the question "why isn't yours 6.x" or worse "when will you upgrade to Linux 6.0" which really drives home the effectiveness of this simple trick. With the move to glibc and nearly everyone else using 6.x now, it made sense to go to at least 6.0, just to make it clear to people who don't know anything about Linux that Slackware's libraries, compilers, and other stuff are not 3 major versions behind. I thought they'd all be using 7.0 by now, but no matter. We're at least "one better", right? :)

Sorry if I haven't been enough of a purist about this. I promise I won't inflate the version number again (unless everyone else does again ;)

Seems to me it's a little bit of that linux elitist in some of us (including me) that caused it, mainly unwillingness to put up with dumb questions. I think this was a good solution to it.

You want every game to have a linux port before you switch over? I think that's a little unreallistic, I mean windows doesn't have every game there is either.

I think a better, more reallistic goal (in the near future) is 80% or more. The way I see it, the more games that are ported to linux the less likely people are to decide not to use linux based on lack of games. So more people will come, and the user base will grow, more companies will port, more users will come... you get the idea. But I think that until Linux has about 30%+ of the desktop market, companies will not always consider it a neccesity to have a linux version available.

most games played today are either console games or games on windows

This is an interesting point... I don't consider console games in normal thought, as I do not own a console system (actually I have a Genesis that I haven't used in years...) I do all of my gaming on PC because of the nifty graphics and because I spend so much money on my PC that I'm not about to go out and buy a console system... but I think consoles will be around for a long time, and will probably hold a large part of the market regardless of linux ports. I don't feel that consoles will detract from linux ports. [[END RANT]]

I suppose if you did something to piss off a person in power (that wasn't illegal) and they were looking for something to throw you in jail over, they might turn something like this up, but that's the only circumstance I can see anyone being jailed over something like this for.
