The usual media coverage of something that might interest the/. community... 'A hacker broke the copy protection on something, he's being sued for it.' Nothing about how it might be LEGALLY useful... and about how totally INFEASIBLE it is to pirate dvd's... phh what morons.
FYI, GNU Parted is a great program, and (of course) it's GPL'd. It serves the same basic functionality as PartitionMagic 4.0, and if you were to make a boot floppy with it on there, you'd have no troubles at all. (Me, i blew out my floppy drive so i DO have troubles, but that's besides the point.) Hey, I suppose I could install a minimalistic linux distro with almost nothing (except parted) on a partition, as well as on my slackware, and that'd be all i needed... plan taken! (Any better plans, e-mail em to me...)
WTF? Just because it's not this way NOW doesn't mean we're not on the right track... The Loki ports are a very important step in the right direction. Quake3 is a great step in the right direction. And it doesn't seem to me like you've been following the DVD thing... DVD is not our fault.
To me, you sound like one of those people who is complaining about why they don't want to use something. "I know it'll have x feature later, but I want it now!" well then you're obviously not ready to switch over. No one's forcing you, stick with windows until linux has a feature level you're comfortable with. I switched over to linux because i was sick of ms and linux had the features i needed at the time. If it doesn't have what you need yet, don't use it yet! OK i'm repeating myself now, so you get the message. My rant ends here. Right here. Now.
Heh... the little tiny "fp"'s that used to be here, with no pride in them... can you remember them? This is much better. I actually am enjoying these, they're a lot more creative than "1 r001 U!". I'd suggest a first-post war... but it looks like we already have it. Don't know who i'm rooting for yet:-)
I mean I'm all for more linux use, but I'm not sure banning another operating system (even if just in government use) is a good idea. After all, isn't linux about freedom?
Whoa... this guy's thing was posted right after the audi story...
I don't see why any company should take down their website for Y2k... If the website is going down for Y2K (unlikely) then let it die a natural death. If there are no problems then you haven't lost any business have you.
I think (assuming that there are problems... which I don't believe will happen)... that it would have to be a giant galoomph followed by more, less-major problems.
Whoa 107 comments and I'm the first one that realized LDP now is both Linux Documentation Project and Linux Drivers Petition... We're gonna hafta start working on newer and better acronyms, or a different system of acronyms... a newer and better system.
OK I don't know of anything to say except "That's messed up." That's it. I think anyone who would attack a santa-claus guy is just messed up, I don't care if they're kids and don't know any better.
I doubt that there was anyone who said "Hey it's microsoft... maybe we shouldn't...:-)." I would guess that Microsoft's domains were in the normal database like any other company's, and a computer went through, didn't care if it said "Microsoft" or "The Corner Store".
Payment received?
NO
Remove dns entry.
That's probably how it happened, except it probably involved a little more code than that, and it was probably a little more complex. (Hehe i think I just called that 3 line thing code...)
Wait a minute... i don't know what to think... someone posting on slashdot asking why someone isn't "just doing something nice for microsoft"... haha. But seriously, this guy could've charged MS a LOT more than $35 to get it back, and had he done that, he would've gotten probably somewhere up to 5 or 6 figures before MS would've decided "Well it would cost us less to sue him". That's how MS thinks, and had he asked for 5 figures, they would've given it to him without suing, since it's soo much cheaper. He WAS doing something nice.
Generally it's possible to cheat whether it's open source or not. I'm not talking about single player cheating, there's almost always cheat codes for that. Remember Diablo and Bobafett? If not, run a search on them and see.
The open sourcing of a commercial project that's selling well and was recently released... sounds like they've 1-up'd ID. Suddenly I have an urge to go buy UT and get the linux binaries...
I've tried the beta releases before 1.0.0 and personally I didn't like em. I don't think my opinion counts though, I think that E is stable and fast. Hehe. You wouldn't believe some of the flames i've gotten on those. But to me, if you really wanted windows, you'd be in windows. A taskbar shouldn't be stuck in the wm, it should be an external ap. If you want a simple wm, then KISS. Don't go putting taskbars and such in it. Use an external taskbar if you really desire one.
Once again, ESR astounds me by coming up with a viewpoint I didn't know I agree'd with. Closed source is just as hackable as open source, it just protects itself by luck. Peer review has always been, is now, and may always be the best way to make something totally flawless, or at least come as close as possible.
Scoff, viruses can occur almost as easily in linux... they just don't occur quite as often because usually the first people to use a new piece of software are the guys who will read the code and if they find a virus they will scream loudly. An OSS app with a virus in it will not exist for long.
I've got another analogy for us that proves why virus writers can't be held responsible because they wrote the virus...
I have 2 old and decrepit computers, and I decide I want to end their lives in a bang. I write a program that could be considered a virus that's designed to attack several computers on a network. My friend likes it. He asks if he can have a copy. He stupidly runs it on his computer that is attached to a T1 and it starts infecting not only his computer, but also some other computers on the internet. Can he be held accountable? NO, he didn't realize he was releasing it. Can I be held accountable? No, I didn't release it.
yea i did that today... i know floppies are essential, but i blew them out THAT DAY...

OK so i read the date wrong but the spirit of my post was still right... it was meant as a joke, it's not a bug.
One word: Moron. In case you didn't notice it was November 10th... not actually in the year 2000. It was a joke, not a bug. :-)
:-)
Sorry if i come off as flamebait but that's just idiocy
Yeah that's humor... at least it made me laugh :-). of course I hang out on #lin so what do i know...
But seriously how could you diss making a joke about a "Y2K Safe" program with a post date of 19100??? Think a bit harder on that one.
yea remember the email adress snafu with the obvious original passwords?

Nope... not necesary. They just upgraded them an hour ago it seems. :-)

Eh I misread the article. I thought that in the client there was some bit of usefulness. They're not 1-up'ing anything.
I have a crappy local dns too. Most likely your DNS server goes and updates every week or so, mine is that slow too.

OK there was another rant.
