I once saw a documentary, one of the BBCs late night "learning zone" ones I think (it was many years ago) that showed lots of evidence for the case that the whole thing was a frame up. There's no mention of that on the above site all!

Googling found this link, which mentions the price of gunpowder at the time being far to expensive for the conspirators to afford the amount they had. There is also doubt on the origins of the letter that tipped off authorities to the plot.

    Another site states the following:

    Was the Plot a fake?

There is considerable evidence that there was no real Gunpowder Plot and that the idea of it was invented by Robert Cecil in order to discredit the Catholics, not to mention other motives such as removing a political rival (Northumberland) and gaining land from the the confiscated estates of Midland Catholics. This view of the plot provides answers to some otherwise awkward questions such as: Why were the Essex rebels let off a so lightly, and what exactly was meant by 'Reserved to her Majesty's use'? Why was Parliament postponed and how did the coal cellar became so easily and conveniently available? Where did so much gunpowder come from? Wasn't Tresham's warning letter an obvious giveaway? Why did Monteagle give it to Cecil and why didn't Cecil inform the King immediately? Why didn't Guy Fawkes escape after the first search and was he really tortured? How come the Midland rebels were so quickly surrounded by the Sheriff's men and why were Catesby and Percy both shot?

I couldn't find any really compelling links, certainally none as good as the documentary.

Bush's lawyers soured the US legal history documents to find something that would allow them to hold people without trial, without loosing face. "Enemy combatants" hasn't ever been used since WW2, apart from Bush recently.

    I'm against all illegal drugs.

Moron. The illegality of most drugs is based on the three R's: (example given is for pot)

    • Religion

There is no mention of pot in bible, while alcohol (the only legal intoxicating drug) is almost worshipped itself
    • Racism

"There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others." - Harry Anslinger, 1937 testimony to Congress in support of the Marijuana Tax Act.
    • Revenue

The main forces behind pots demonification were owners of timber stocks. Hemp (once one of the US's main cash crops) can produce paper far more efficiently than wood, at the loss to the lumber industries. They funded the misinformation films such as "Reefer Madness" as well as applied political lobbying. *

    * it's nice to know (kind-of) that the current government corruption isn't exactly a recent development

The banning of almost all of them are linked to these. The social/psychological/physical impact is not relevant. Most illegal drugs commonly in use are less harmful than the pollution you breathe in during a stroll down an average city street.

And, why exactly are you against them? Did the alcohol-company-funded groups get to you early as a child? Don't take their drugs!! Take ours!!

Back on topic, this thing is a waste of time, except perhaps in prisons. Drugs do not get distributed through the post. Not do they get around on commercial flights, smuggled in condoms etc. Sure, it happens, but it's tip of the iceberg stuff.

The trade in illegal drugs is the third largest industry in the world. It is liked to organised crime, national security agencies and lot's of other seedy, underhand groups. Do you have any concept about how many "drugs" are consumed every week in the western world? How do you propose to stop this lucrative trade? Impossible. The law of supply and demand dictates it.

The only solution is total legalisation of most drugs. (with a few obvious exceptions). That way, you remove control of the trade away from the people who are the most undesirable to be in that postion.

Not only do you break the link with crime (and the gateway effect), you will also save lifes. I'd estimate that 90% of all drug deaths are directly related to the illegality of the drug, and not the drug itself. By far the biggest killer is heroin. The total lack of quality control means that some batches are many times the strength of others, hence the overdose deaths. The expence and availablity of the drug is also what causes the users to inject that crap into their bodys. If opium was much more available, most people would just smoke it instead of injecting. The same is true for MDMA (ecstacy), The vast majority of deaths are down to misinformation (overheating/dehyration) or the fact that the pill wasn't even ecstacy! The only "evidence" that Ecstacy causes any long term damage was recently thrown out when independant researches found out that it wasn't even ecstacy in the original study!

The drug stuff is a load of lies, like most things that people get told by those in power these days. One other poster suggested that the scientists behind that should try to cure cancer instead. However, the flaw behind that is that there is no money to be made.

OK, where do I begin? First off - I'm amazed and somewhat scared at your current image of what life in Iraq is like. Secondly, I'd like to mention that all linked sites are googled for, none are my favourites or anything like that. I'm personally getting most of my news coverage from the BBC, FYI, but I'm having trouble with their website, so I can't reference anything there. However, I figured you'd want proof, so google was used to get me relevant links. Some of the articles/issues were new to me.

Imagine a place where basic social order has broken down. This is Iraq. No government to pay wages, no workers to do essential tasks in a human society. Complete turmoil. There are still problems with drinking water in many places; due to equiptment that has been poorly maintained, as you yourself point point out. The war and lack of engineers working (who'll pay them and give them replacement parts?) has pushed the system to breaking point, a system we weakened ourselves (I'm a bit skeptical on this one, i.e. delibarate targeting).

Coming out the other end, sewage is also a massive problem. Not only do the above issues affect drinking water, they also have a big problem with rivers of raw sewage around in cramped living conditions. Disease is the last thing you want when you have a completely destroyed health system. Having no refuse facitlities also causes many problems, not least of all disease carrying vermin.

The lack of maintence is not Saddams fault, it never was, it is due to the international sanctions, which has been commonly acknowledged for a long time. They could not import the parts to fix the systems. They couldn't manufacture them, as the equiptment to make piping etc is the same stuff you use to make weaponry, and the sanctions have denied them that as well. It's now down to charities to help rebuild this system, as well as collaliton forces. Sure, you can pat yourself on the back that water and sewage will soon be superiour to pre-war levels, but remember why the system was poor in the first place. I'm sure all the dead children and vurnerable people who have died as a result of your glory will be lining up to thank you if there was an afterlife.

Police are scare and crime is at extraodinary levels. Car jacking, kidnapping, rapes, murders and theft plauge every city. Citizens are scared to roam the streets, travel at night is a dangerous proposal. Cars are only used in emergency, unless you want armed gangs taking them from you.

Most peoples savings have been rendered useless. The most popular large denomination note, the 10,000 dinar, is not accepted anywhere, due to mass forgery on stolen printing machines. Coinage is the only acceptible payment for anything. However, this is fortunatly changing, as a new currency has been introduced a week or so ago. This will take a while (til January they reckon) to become universal, but it leaves serious issues with folk who have literally become pennyless. People have to eat, feed children, pay bills and live. With so many workers not getting paid
