  1. No Backlight. on Gameboy Advance Clone Superemulator · · Score: 1

And I also believe it doesn't support the afterburner type lights for the gba. Not having decent lighting is the main reason why my game boy advance sits in a bag collecting dust instead of being used for anything useful.

  2. Dead Alive Part 2 on RotK Delayed Until May 2004 · · Score: 1

Comming in Summer 2005! One billion gallons of blood are said to be used for the film's special effects (This is at least a thousand gallons more than the first one). Peter Jackson's dreams to take this classic and turn it into a trilogy have finally come real.

  3. Media Computer? on Lindows Media Computer: Power to Strike Microsoft? · · Score: 1

Is it just me, or wouldn't you expect a media computer to be a computer that you can hook up your television and view its content (video files, sound files, pictures) on your television using a remote control? Why all this talk about DVD playing? What is so special about a computer playing a DVD?

  4. Taxing software on Software Tariffs and US IT Outsourcing? · · Score: 1

Why doesn't the US tax the import of software?

Taxing software seems impossible. What exactly is importing software? Sending code over FTP? Sending the finished product? If its compiled in the US and developed elsewhere is that still imported?? Maybe taxing the actual labor that would make more sense.

  5. DataPlay on Plasmon Exhibits Working Blue Laser DVD Drive · · Score: 2, Interesting

What about dataplay, 500MB in the size roughly of a quarter. Very neat, but i think they ended up filing for bankruptcy over competition with flash cards and hard drive based mp3 players. I think even Britney Spears was scheduled to release an album using this technology.

  6. Security Flaws on Security Expert Paul Kocher Answers, In Detail · · Score: 1

  7. My Low-Cost VHS Capture Experiences on Video Capturing Guide at Ars Technica · · Score: 3, Insightful

A few months ago, I made some attempt to digitize some VHS Tapes, with 4 different devices each reletively cheap (under $100) (Linx USB Plus Video Capture Cable, Belkin USB VideoBus II Video Capture Adapter, ATI TV Wonder, and Creative Labs Video Blaster Digital VCR). I was able to get the best quality out of Digital VCR though the software was buggy and annoying. The one click remote control recording was great, but once recorded, the movies are difficult to work with and extract to a file (The ridiculous little program it came with to extract video files was pure trash). The two usb devices were convenient, but neither could offer a serious representation of the vhs (each allowing a very limited resolution and quality with the very limited usb 1.0 bandwidth). As for the ATI tv-wonder, i had endless problems with color and quality as well as dropped frames. By the way, I was using an amd 1700+ with a 60gb harddrive. Some of my problems may have been user based, but after all this trouble, the next time i'll probably go for an analog to dv converter, or a digital camcorder with analog in.

  8. Forced to listen from a PC? on AOL Enters Music Service Fray · · Score: 1

That's no fun. Maybe to preview songs before getting them from somewhere else?? But then again, Amazon.com is now offering mpeg previews so what's the point.

  9. Proof of how stupid jurors can be. on Amazon Scores Another Patent · · Score: 1

Here: Adobe sues Macromedia over the use of tabbed windows and is awarded 2.8 million by the jury for damages. The funny thing is that Macromedia countersued Adobe shortly after and was awarded 4.9 million for simularly stupid patents. So Adobe ended up loosing 2.1 million plus all the court costs for what they did. Ironic indeed.

  12. MSN as a Home Page on Microsoft Sends Broken Stylesheets to Opera · · Score: 1
If you don't like it, either use IE (not me thanks) or not visit the website (that would be me).
This isn't to discourage Opera users away from using opera, but its to discourage explorer users from trying opera. Many people have msn as their home page because it was defaulted to that, so these people would immediately see these problems if they decide one day to switch to try Opera. Since Microsoft has such a huge amount of the market share, its a good chance that a new Opera user is an ex-Explorer user.
  13. The Cdnow Experience. on Six Giant Music Retailers Will Try Online Sales Together · · Score: 5, Interesting

I remember purchasing music from cdnow thinking i was getting an mp3 file i could later burn to a cd, only to find out (after the fact) the music was in this liquid audio format where the "recommended" player was liquid audio player (which i believe was the only player). It also claimed the song was only playable from 1 computer and was crippled in such a way that I had to do an analog rip of the song from one of my computers to the other. My point is that if they are going to be successful they have to be MORE convenient that file sharing programs. And not just by having easily downloadable mp3s, but an easier interface, more reliability, and faster downloads, etc...

  15. 50 Years Per Square Inch? on Ferroelectric Storage Density Tops 20KDVDs/Cubit^2 · · Score: 1

According to their figures (and some bad math), it would take 1 to 50 years to write a square inch at what they said was their desired maximum capacity (4 petabits) considering the write speeds they gave (from 2.5 MB/sec to 125 MB/sec). It also claims the current prototye is "not accurate enough for practical applications" but will be possibly in 5 years. I don't know, but possibly, by that time, another technology will arise with simular or better capacity and a write speed to fill it in minutes or hours though.
