Look under your mouse options in Windows to get this. For Linux, well, I don't where to go to enable this, but I remember panning in documents this way in Netscape 4.7 at my university. 12. Sorry Sony, but that is innovation on Extended Xbox Live Capabilities To Debut · · Score: 1, Interesting

I'm no Microsoft lover, but people need to start to realize that even tough they're not the best at making games, they are bringing a lot of innovation to the console market, and Sony is not the one doing the innovation in that area.

So maybe the Xbox box and controller design is bad, and the controller bigger than other consoles (tough I never found that an handicap for me), but they're really trying to push the enveloppe of what console gaming is. Sony never did shit to improve gaming. Using a CD instead of a cartridge wan't innovative, it was just the next logical step, and the controller is just a ripoff of the SNES controller with two pairs of L/R buttons instead of one.

So, maybe you'll argue that the Xbox and its broadband connection and HD isn't innovative, since it's already available to the PC for years, but you have to understand that this console only game out a year after the PS2 and only a couple of days before the GameCube, and these consoles still don't have anything comparable to offer in North America right now (sure, Japan gets all the cool stuff first, well, except for the Xbox :) ). The PS2 with online adapter costs as much at the Xbox right now, but with Xbox you get two awesome games and the HD (which still isn't out for the PS2 btw) for the same price.

Now, with Xbox Live, Microsoft is integrating GameSpy-like features directly into the gaming experience. They might not have the greatest games, but with all the momentum Microsoft is gaining right now, I wouldn't be surprised if people started buying even more Xboxes. In fact, my local ebGames store told me that two months ago that Xbox outsold PS2 5 units to 2 in his store at that time. I don't know if it's still the same tough.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to get across here, but loss focus of because I just love my Xbox and games(ok, so maybe I was a bit trolling over there, sorry!), is that Microsoft, for once, is the innovative one. While everybody else in console gaming is trying to catch up (or not at all as Nintendo is pretty much doing), they should deserve a little more respect they are getting, even tough they're still Microsoft, and most of us would not want to get caught dead with a licensed Windows copy of WinME in their hands.

Now, let the trolling begin! :)

  13. Blades of Steel on Konami Veterans Talk NES Classics · · Score: 4, Interesting

That was a great hockey game for the NES from Konami. You even heard someone say "Blades of Steel" when you loaded the game. Whhhooaaaa! :) It was so cool at the time! It wasn't too realistic (since when the loser of a fight is going to the penalty box? :D ), but it just so fun.

No rules, just twelves guys with a hockey stick and one puck, trying to outscore the other team. Today's game are all about realism. I hate it when you have to stop the game because off an offside or whatever hey call them these days. That's why I don't really watch hockey anymore either. The game just stops too often. But Blades of Steel stopped only for goals. The only rule was there was no rule.

A weird gameplay mechanic of the game was that if you touched the goaler, a player would fall, so if you stuck your guy with the puck behind the goaler right in the middle of the net, the CPU players at the professionnal difficulty level would try to go around the net, but always bump into the goaler, start again, fall on the ice, and again and again and again, so you just had to score once and then wait for the timer to go back to 0:00 and you won the game.

I've played many hockey games dring the 90s (well, not that many tough, many were revisions of NHL Hockey from EA), but I never enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed Blades of Steel back then. Sure the AI wasn't as developped as today's hockey games, but I can't remember a hockey that when we made a goal had me and my buddies screaming more than this one.

  19. Graphics... on Killzone Tries To Meet Halo-Beater Hype · · Score: 1

One of the reason of Halo's success, besides the great story and awesome action, is the incredible quality of the graphics. It's jawdropping even on a regular TV set. I haven't seen it yet on an HDTV, but I bet it's one of the most beautifull games on the Xbox, despite it being released at system launch.

What I've seen so far from that PS2 are average graphics, and very dark colors. There's no way this is going to match Halo's bright and detailed worlds.

So that game will really have to have a really great gameplay to surpass Halo AND get a major graphics overhaul to even be worthy of Halo. And by that time that game finally, comes out, Xbox ownser will all be happy playing Halo2 on their Xbox, and if God wants to, Doom3. :)

Maybe if that game came out 3 years ago, it might have been nice, but now, unless it does get the graphics overhaul, it's just going to look boring compared to other FPS. You shouldn't always judge a game by it's looks, but that's what people always do at first, and that costs sales.

Now, to anyone who says that "it's because of people like me who prefer graphics over gameplay (which I DON'T anyway) that the creativity has stagnated in the gaming industry in the past few years in favor of graphics", well you know what? Get real. Today's games aren't only about gameplay, they're also about immersion, and since the standard of computer graphics has been raised, nobody is gonna be fooled anymore by Mario Bros blocky sprites and call that immersion.

  20. Re:Not on the PS2 on Killzone Tries To Meet Halo-Beater Hype · · Score: 1

It means that the game is rendered in "something" by 720 lines of resolution. If you have the HDTV adapter fox the Xbox (not available on the PS2 I believe) and an HDTV, that's what you're going to get. Other resolutions include 480p, 480i (for interlaced, so 480i is less good than 480p), 525p, 525i, 1080i (not sure about the last one tough). So when there's a P, fullframes are rendered, like on a computer, and when there's an I, then it's half-frames, like on a TV.

But it sure is nice tought. And there is NO LOSS while taping a show. The only grudge I've had in the past with the system is that sometimes I would get decompression squares or image freeze, more than usual. Turned out the signal that came into my house wasn't strong enough, so they had to install a booster. Everything thing works a 100% fine now. It even has TV on demand, so you can order a TV show, play, rewind, fastward, instant replay as you want. I though it used the hard drive, but it turns out our HDless model in the living room is also able to have video on demand, and it's as fast as with Explorer 8000. 22. Re:The 7.1 Audio on Specs for Sony PSP Handheld · · Score: 1

Well, you don't need an optical cable to have 5.1 audio, since you can use 3 stereo cables (one for the front, one for the rear, one of the bass/center) on a lot of DVD players and amplifier, tough having 6 wire coming out of your PSP would be pretty cumbersome.

Also, I've seen in stores a new generation of headphones that decode 5.1 signal and redistribute the sound in little speakers positionned at different places inside each of the ear muffs, giving something close to a 5.1 hometheater experience. The obvious obstacle is of course price, but these should become mainstream in a few years with consomers who are realizing more and more that the only way to watch a good movie is in 5.1 on a 50 each TV, or even better, a projector, and that should drive the price of the headset under the 100$ bar.
