  1. I don't get it... on Which DVD Recordable Format Will Win? · · Score: 1

I mean, why are they doing these incompatible formats. Let's see, we already have something called DVD's which we buy in stores, the technology is currently WORKING. Why don't the frickin' burners burn in this format and get it over with!!!

Or lemme guess, the DVD's we have are a broken standard where the designers haven't thought that maybe someday someone would say : "wwwhhoooa man, this is cool, if only I could make home movies with these." I mean, have you ever seen a VHS tape NOT work if you taped it with a video recorder and played it on another one? Get the point?

These days, with laws like DMCA, Digital Right Managements, DVDs with unskippable tracks and other crap like these, I am thinking that technology is just going to get suckier, not better. The good old days are over I guess...

I mean they are at the theater for about a year. I would guess that the film is expensive to produce and transport.

I think it has more to do with the fact the IMAX theaters are not found everywhere so they don't get to show the movie to a lot of people very quickly, compared to traditional cinemas. I've never an Imax room less then half-full, even after a movie came out months ago. There always seems to be a lot of poeple going there. After all it shouldn't cost a lot more. It's not like DVD's where you have to put more information in the same space as CDs. The IMAX film is just bigger.

If for the software this changes nothing (and probably does, after all, the games must still play on the console), it probably changes something in the MOD chip. So that means that the new XBOX that is shipped will not be compatible with the old mocdhips. The result? MOD Chip installers will have to thrown away their old supply of mod chips to make new ones, unless there's a simple way to change the keys in the MOD chip. This is surely going to hurt the mod chip companies who will have to throw away their old mod chips and buy new ones. If Microsoft keeps changing the keys in the hardware often enough, the mod chippers are going to run in a lot of troubles determining which mod chip is needed for which XBOX. This is a brilliant move.

The reason why I didn't go into DirectX stuff is mainly because I don't know much about it. But from what I've seen in some college course, it has a lot of fluffy stuff and initlization routines you have to go through before drawing even a single pixel in Direct 3D and DirectDraw, while in GL you create a window, create a GL context, bind them, and you're ready to go.

If you don't want to start from scratch, Direct3d has 2 modes : immediate and something I think is called retained mode. Retained mode is basically a basic 3d engine with notions of meshes, lights, directions, parent/child space, that sort of stuff, already implemented and is great for beginners. It can even load .x files, which you can create with 3DS Max and then convert to .x with a utility that comes with the SDK. You don't even have to care about model loading, isn't it great? Or of course you can get dirty and play with the immediate mode which achieves the same purpose as OpenGL does, but with a totally different system, which, as Carmack once put it "is broken, but still works."

For the sound though, you will have to go with DirectSound, since it's the best way to make audio on Windows. You might want to look for OpenAL, if you want to do cross platform stuff. It's the OpenGL for audio, hence the AL. I'm not sure though that the standard is set in stone. You should check that out.

I'm glad someone responded brilliantly to my post as you did. I have to admit, I may have jumped a bit ahead of Jon Katz by talking about 9/11 (silly me), but I still think that part of my point is valid. Today, more and more often do we see journalists using the 9/11 facts or ideas in the news, and I'm not talking *only* about the US, I'm talking everywhere, but it seems though that whenever someone has a chance to put some 9/11 fact in an article, they will do it. I don't know much about other countries, since I don't watch news from Spain or other counrties like that, though I get some news from them from the world news and newspaper.

Second, I wasn't implying that americans are worldless snob. As with every country, there are people who are interrested in other cultures and countries, like you seem to be. But whenever I jump on the web on newsgroups (and I'm not talking only Slashdot here), or watch American news, I can't help but feel that your country is looking more and more to it's own self and not looking around them.

The problem seems to be, in my point of view that the masses aren't that concerned about the rest of the world. And when you have a president like George W. Bush who says "We're not gonna reduce our pollution level because it would be bad for american economy.", then I wonder what the masses even think!!! Especially when it's the masses that put him there in the first place. (even tought that's about 25% of your mass)

Feel free, to respond back, you seem to be an interresting fellow.

The only gripe I have about the article is about this snippet of text :
For instance, one might put a terrorist's head on an opponent's body.

That, my friends, is bad journalism. Stop thinking 9/11 and give the rest of the world a rest and stop adding terrorist consipiracies and references to everything you write.

Even tough I sympatize with the american people about the tragic events of 9/11, please lighten up and realize that there has been people who've cried for longer and harder than you in a lot of countries devastated by war and terrorism and that it took you two towers and the death thousands of rich americans to realize the horror of MILLIONS of poor 3rdworld habitants.

Sometimes, I think that americans put more value on their life than other people. It's not rare that thousands of people get killed in a week in some countries due to terrorist activities. But you never hear of them, and you people don't care. But 2000 rich americans, oh... this is much more important.

I'd like to have someone prove me wrong on this... and someone who will say other things than "F*** YOU, A**HOLE." But maybe that changed with 9/11, and you people finally fell back from your cloud.

    Welcome to the real world.

I mean, there are so many disadvantages to this technology. Sure the picture quality is going to be very nice, much better then DVDs but... From what I understand this is a tape based format. Now, anyone who's been using DVDs for a while will never want to use DVHS. It's like going back to dialup when you had broadband : nobody wants to be waiting for the tape to go forward and backward so they can find what they're looking for.

Plus, what's cool about a DVD is that you get access to all the special features easily. But with a tape based format, you will have to fast-forward your way to the end of the tape to find the special features. I hate fastforwaring to the end of my "Army of Darkness" tape to show the alternate ending to friends who want to see it but not the whole movie. (not wanting to see the movie should be a crime, but that's another topic :-) )

Also, DVDs have these advantages over DVHS : they are small, shiny, and you don't get a fine at the videostore because you forgot to *rewind* your DVD. :-p
