  1. Re:What is up with the UK on To the Moon and Beyond · · Score: 2

Plus you have The Mirror trying to shepherd the people, but be on the other side of the fence. That's what make me sick about my home country, but being in the USA isn't saying much... it's just like most of the major the news channels model themselves on the worst and most insidious UK rag; The Daily Mail (i.e. Do gooders, point the blame on someone else, etc).

Plus, on one side our PM is Bush's lapdog, and on the other he is being the high school tease with the rest of Europe... and the politicians wonder why there is so much voter apathy!

  3. Stac? on Sendo Accuses MS of Stealing Smartphone IP · · Score: 2

Remember the old MS-DOS days and M$'s illegal bundling of Stac software (DriveSpace, DoubleSpace, whatever)... and in return for Stac's suit, they either bought them out or changed the software enough not to infringe further on the Stac IP (AFAIK, it was a long time ago, hence the details being rather sketchy).

  4. ATI and naming conventions on DirectX 9 Finally Out · · Score: 3, Informative

Although I can't be bothered to search for the link (it was on Anandtech or Toms Hardware), but apparently the ATI cards incorporate the DirectX version in their names.. hence the 9xxx cards were designed with DirectX 9.x in mind (hardware manufacturers have had the spec for months), and the Radeon 8xxx series was designed with DirectX 8.x... etc.

nVidia on the other hand started messing things up with the MX's, Ti's and Pure versions (let alone the FX, what next? FX2 or FX Part Deux?)... let alone any correlation to new or existing graphics technologies... i.e. they're just there to confuse Joe Public into thinking a GeForce 4 MX is better than a GeForce 3 etc.

I can vouch for that... I went to a Garbage concert and regretted not moshing like I usually would, so being further back I was in a direct line of the speakers.. I got my hearing back about two days later (and the ear wax production went to normal). Although I'm looking forward to hooking up my brothers DJ mobile speakers, all high quality BOSE with an output for about 3000 people.. but this old house might not have enough juice.

All we need is the legendary brown noise... and it won't be our hearing we'll be worrying about!

How about The Sims, and it's almost "Magic The Gathering" likeness regarding expansion packs?... EA (and Maxis, but isn't Maxis a wholly owned subsidiary?) have certainly made a lot of money by recycling that piece of crap over and over and over again (talk about a cash cow)...

...and yes, that might be considered flamebait to those who like The Sims series, but come on... when I played it, it took like 15 minutes just for a man to go for a piss! (unless it included time spent doing other things in the bathroom?) among other woeful "gameplay" issues.

I know I shouldn't be boxing EA because of my gripes against that game, they do come out with a lot of good stuff (i.e. Medal of Honor). Anyway, rant over!

Let's just say it had nothing to do with Freddie Mercury and Co!

Now to go ontopic for all those mods! I remember the only thing useful about HotBot was the warez related searches, since I always used Yahoo! (but it's results were "cleaner" so to speak)... that is until AstaLaVista and Google came along.

  11. Long URL's (or is that URI ;-) )? on Will Your CD Player Tell on You? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Although I use the free ZoneAlarm.. I'm also pretty restrictive about what programs I allow access, i.e. why oh bloody why does WMP require internet access when playing a media file when all the required codecs are installed (pile of crap it is).

But, the cynic in me keeps shouting out this idea... what is to stop the disc (well apart from disabling autoplay, unless MS has some other "backdoor" auto execution of something on new media) from opening up a browser window with a heavily customised piece of url every now and then? The default access permissions will allow any web browser to do it's stuff?

    Just food for thought.

  12. iBond or iT2000 edition? on Apple Hawks Madonna iPods · · Score: 2

Yep, it might reduce the price to nothing... for example would playing "Die Another Day" incite hardware failure? Either by the iPod developing a taste for music (in which case it self destructs) or the listener throws the iPod into a wall? (when users friend has got a waaaay cooler "Q" department issue iPod/iBond with a laser light show or something).

So in the end it is rather worthless, being in little pieces and all, unless Apple develops a special Terminator edition called the iT2000 (for when the film comes out) that can morph back together?

  13. Sod CD-R! Go With DVD recording on Large IDE Drives as Long-Term Archival Media? · · Score: 1

Agreed, I've been looking into the same thing... having 230GB of data (with capacity soon to be expanded to 460GB) and no backups per se... just because the idea sends a shiver down my spine.

I'm also reluctant to get extra IDE drives to use as backup media, even if they're only use when transferring... all it takes is a magnet happy nephew/niece or an accidental drop... and the provebial shit hits the fan.

But looking on NewEgg.. you can pick up DVD recorders for under $400 (my friend recommended sticking with DVD+RW).. and you can buy a 50 pack of 4.7GB DVD-RW disks for $65 (there we're DVD+RW disks but I can't find them now). With storage capacity making CD-R disks look paltry, DVD recordable seems the way to go for our needs at least.

And for keeping tabs on what is on which disk... I've been using a freeware program called "Cathy" (I don't have any links) for all my CDR archives... and this program ROCKS! (It just rips the file data in about a second, rather than other programs that take 5 minutes to traverse and log the files) Although I don't know whether it'll do DVD's, I haven't tried.

  15. Re:Software vs. hardware raid on IDE RAID Examined · · Score: 2

Same here, I built a fileserver in my brothers house for all his DJ'ing media. Since I didn't have a RAID controller, i used the software RAID 0 formatting when installing Red Hat 7.3 (2x120GB IBM Deskstar drives).

This was built at the end of June this year. The system has had plenty of usage over the last couple of months and has been fine (especially with extended power cuts that went beyond the ability of the UPS). Due to dwindling space I want to slap a RAID controller in there and put 2 extra drives on (the same model of drive). For the controller I've got the 4 channel Promise Rocket on my NewEgg wishlist ($100 isn't bad at all).

I'm not looking forward to how I'm going to juggle backing up 230GB of media... I suppose I'll format the new drives, copy the data over, take out the software RAID'ed drives and slap them into the controller (format and prep), and copy the data to the new RAID and add the new drives (i.e. just to make sure I don't have any major screw ups!). If anyone has any tips on this I would be grateful! I'm sure my brother will be more inclined for me to get a DVD+RW drive and plenty of disks... CD's don't seem to cut it anymore when dealing with 250GB+ of data (hey ho *sigh).

Oh and machine I'm using the file server on is one of those Walmart deals (it was the Duron 1Ghz $399 one), and has performed brilliantly (touch wood!)... although the first thing to die on me was the Intel EtherExpress Pro NIC I put into it.

How ironic that British scientists are trying to develop ways to make even more rain than the country is blessed with getting (I suppose it gives us more reason to complain about the weather - although as a Brit in CT, I'm finding it bloody cold here).

I remember hearing years ago about how to stop clouds from raining over certain areas, by planes dropping concrete powder into the rain cloud that might disturb an outdoor event (or something that would be spoilt by rain). Although I can't vouch for the truth of this tale, but the first thing that sprang to mind when hearing this was of concrete clouds falling from the sky.

But then again, we all know clouds are held up in the sky by string.... all we need is more string and wind machines ;-)
