the article does NOT confirm the 970 chip, only that "Although Apple (AAPL ) won't talk about it, IBM (IBM ) is developing a new set of chips that Apple will likely use to replace theaging Motorola processors used in its G4 line."

Chances are the chips are a g5, but for the record the 970 is never mentioned.

  4. It's a shame... on No Abiword For Mac? · · Score: 3, Interesting

...abi was canceled. I made the trek over to the net lab simply to use a copy of abiword installed on my network drive. Whenever people ask me what it is, I usually tell them it's MS Word that works.

Sounds prety corny but think about it, how many times have you wanted to use word and just have it leave you alone? Everytime I've used Word, even on a mac, im constantly annoyed by pop ups and "hints."

Yes they can be disabled but with Abi they're not even there in the first place. In my opinion, Abi is the most full featured software that lets me get my work done, without bugging me the entire while. I was hoping the Abi team would pick up the mac and make a full os x native version. Hopefully someone else will pick up the code and finish the job, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

They still shut down the guys site and are saving it to use as evidence against him. Obviously they believe the user is in some schism with the law. And yeah the guy I quoted disagreed with the lawsuit. What he said is, we need to be going after people pirating for commercial gain, not for people sharing music for the sake of sharing. What's implied is the site was shut down because the recording industry claimed the user was trying to make commercial profit off of his site, which he clearly wasnt, and, as you said, the lawsuit is spurious.

clear as mud now eh :)

a guys website which had a few songs to download. Then goes on to say.

"The focus of these organisations should be on people who are running or pirating music for clear commercial benefit,"

How does sharing a few singles on a website pose a pirate threat or count as pirating music as a clear commercial benefit. Granted I don't know the full situation but it doesn't sound like anything more than "Hey here are some songs I like from [Fill In the Blank] band! Check em out!"

Yeah. I did misread it. Still memory sticks still aren't affordably priced for an mp3 player. Compare this to something like an iPod or a Rio and there is a large disparity in the $/mb ratio.

  15. I guess I don't see the point on Hacking the Streamium · · Score: 5, Interesting

Props for sticking it to the man but isn't the Stream/ium just a set of speakers connected to the internet?

What's the difference between this and simply streaming music to your computer, then streaming it out of another set of speakers?

Maybe it's the idea of replacing radio with a true people's medium? Maybe wrenching power away from the media moguls and using the internet as the peoples voice to listen to/stream the music they want? In that case why did you buy the Stream/Ium in the first place? It obviously only connects to Phillips approved content and judging by this statement: " Digital connectivity also enables the Streamium MC-i200's digital connectivity to receive additional services and features from Philips and its partner companies as and when they are offered. Details of available updates for both the Streamium MC-i200 and the FW-i 1000 will be posted on the Philips Audio website, www.audio.philips.com." It sounds like its going to be collecting data about you.

  16. What I'd like to see more on Open Content Music Database Launched · · Score: 4, Interesting

than open source music is a simple way of getting samples put onto vinyl. Ive seen so called "computer dj" programs and its still nothing close to cutting on real vinyl.

Though I do like the idea of freeing up music, beats, samples etc, with out a good medium to manipulate the audio this is less of an achievement than it seems.

The reason I say this is because Im a skrxtch dj so this problem of manipulating the audio affects me much more than someone who's mostly doing music on the computer [various forms of electronica]

Another interesting point is that that most skrxtch records encourage reusing the samples and beats. In fact I have a copy of Tales from the Crate next to me that on the cover reads "Unauthorized Duplication is prohibited. Unauthorized flipping, mixing and juggling is recommeneded" [Thats an approximation, I couldnt find the sleeve]

  17. Does anyone have any insight on Apple's X11 Beta Updated · · Score: 1

on why apple chose twm as the default window manager? I upgraded last night and it took me awhile to figure out how to re-enable quartz-wm.

One would assume apples own release of x11 would be targeted at those wanting to try out x11 without installing the traditional [read barbaric] way with the cli.

Yes I know on apple's site it says the release is targeted at developers, but most developers who are creating apps for x11 are competent enough to handle installing the window system the "old" way.

  25. This may shock some on U.S. Pushing Conservative Science · · Score: 5, Interesting

Most science is funded by a sponsorship of some kind. Very little is done out of the scientist pocket. Because of this, science becomes a sort of business model. As long as the scientist is producing results, his funding continues. See where this is going?

Is this going to lead to a distrust of government.? Doubtful. It may wake up a few but the vast majority either know now, or will never know.
