You're arguing function, I'm arguing form. Dodge putting out a carbon copy of the Firebird, with their logo wherever the Pontiac logo is on a Firebird, and calling it an Icebird is a much more relevent example. You, on the other hand, seem to be arguing with your throttle analogy that copyright law requires you to rethink the layout of play, pause, forward/back... which is clearly nonsense.
You're stretching an analogy that never fit to begin with far past the breaking point here. It shows a complete lack of critical thought, in my opinion.
Apple lost the look-and-feel suit with Microsoft over different interpretations of a clause in one of the contracts between the companies. Microsoft argued that it allowed them to copy the GUI. They won, which I think was surprised Microsoft as much as anyone else.
I agree that software patents that protect methodologies are bad, but design is copyright law, and not patents at all. You don't see a Dodge Firebird out there, do you? Rip-offs of copyrighted designs should absolutely be stopped.
Now if you took those same two teams and gave them my boss (feature creep, no dev schedule, sells a feature before it's developed, etc), the XP team would live and the traditional programmers would be bald from pulling their hair out.
They'd live, but I bet they'd end up unemployed before the project was finished.
If you're having problems getting a route to the Software Update server, it's (obviously!) a connectivity issue.
As for iChat requiring a restart, I was surprised by that. But then I noticed I had the menuling open still. Perhaps if you close everything, it might not require a restart? Not sure. I went ahead and restarted anyway, since it was just a Powerbook and it had been a while since I'd restarted anyway.
I think they're about the same speed as with 4.0, but they're of much better quality. The iPhoto 4.0 thumbnails didn't seem to bear a lot of resemblence to the original photo...
I had no problem video chatting between iChat 2.1 Beta and AIM a few nights ago. I suspect there's a firewall to blame. Could the built in XP firewall interfere?
Does anyone have a good site for explaining how all these new objects fit into the old scheme? I am still confused about the KBOs and "potential planets" 10 (Varuna) and 11 (I forget the name), and now we've got this and it's being referred to as potential planet 10...
Isn't this just another KBO? Isn't Pluto just another KBO? Why would we call this planet 10 and ingore Varuna?
Someone told me that this works in Netscape and Firebird. Does it?
The answer is both yes and no. The toolbar works best in most recent versions of mozilla, since this has been where development has occurred all along. Due to XUL changes in the mozilla versions following the release of Netscape 6.2, the Googlebar will not work at all in any release of Netscape 6.2.x or below. However, in Netscape 7, which is a close cousin of recent mozilla versions, the Googlebar works. It has also been tested to work in Phoenix/Firebird 0.2 and above.
Sure. You can set any keyboard command you want to open the menus, and you just start typing the menu command. I used to use ctrl-m. I agree the dialog buttons are a little inconsistent in some apps, but in most coommand+first letter will do it.
(Sorry for posting anon the first time, but I thought I was responding to a troll...:)
Just FYI and as a data point, I found The Odds "Singles-Individually Wrapped" for $17 today. It's about $1 more than I expected, but in its defense it is a greatest hits-type album and has 16 songs on it. (For the Americans in the audience, call it about $13.)
Woo hoo! Now if only the legal rights to Travelling Willburys would shake loose...:)
I do the same thing, and prices on CDs are actually very low in Canada.
I don't like to get a CD and find only one song I like. If I do, I won't buy another CD for months.
With Kazaa or Limewire, I can download a few songs and see what I think of the band. This is why I've been willing to buy Offspring, Collective Soul, Dr. Hook, Huey Lewis, Matchbox 20's new album, Otis Redding, Rush... and why I'm currently looking for The Odds (they were out of stock here, because their lead singer toured recently) and The Traveling Wilburys (out of stock since the 1990s).
Go ahead and make fun of some of the bands I like. It's certainly a weird mix! The point is that I know I like these bands, because I've heard enough songs by them.
F13-F15 do not map very reliably. I don't know why they shouldn't, but F13=PrintScreen in particular was highly problematic on my Apple keyboard. I had to plug the PS2-type keyboard back in or install software to get screenshots for documentation.
Also, I'm confused about how you could be confused about me being confused.:)
There isn't really that much involved in setting up a DVD after you've taken care of the movies. So why are there two different DVD burning apps? What's the real difference?
True, they sold the fast ferries for $20 million when it cost $300 million to build them. But they needed $80 million in repairs and were unsuitable even once repaired. The NDP never did any kind of study on their suitability for the run before having them built. So you can blame the NDP for the loss.
I bought a DVD burner a year ago and never could get it working. I burnt my first DVD with my new Mac two days ago, and it worked perfectly first try (well, first try I waited long enough instead of deciding it had crashed -- it hadn't, the progress bar had just stopped updating for some reason).
I think the product Apple turned into Final Cut Pro used to have a Windows version, but it was dropped. No Linux version, though.
Pickton was probably the worst thing to ever happen to BC. And the blame for him not being caught goes to the Vancouver police, not the province or federal governments.
I don't know how many machines I've had to rebuild the stacks on because of shitty software-based firewalls for Windows.
I bet I do: None. Why would you have to rebuild a stack because of a firewall?

Ah. See, I thought you were an idiot. :)
It isn't necessarily a bad assumption... they're about a dime a dozen on slashdot some days. :)
WinExpose -- their real site is www.winexpose.com.
It was spammed to me. In addition to my usual sending of spam complaints to hosts, I sent a copy off to Apple Legal.
Shortly thereafter, the product name was changed.
Shortly thereafter, the company web site was dead.
I believe they're out of business completely now. Thank God. Fucking spammers deserve all that, plus a few smacks to the head with a baseball bat.
Now if you took those same two teams and gave them my boss (feature creep, no dev schedule, sells a feature before it's developed, etc), the XP team would live and the traditional programmers would be bald from pulling their hair out.

I agree the default settings are pretty nasty, but have you actually downloaded anything with IE? It's completely different!
From the GoogleBar FAQ:

$10-20 sounds right. Are you on the east coast? I've heard discs are cheaper out here on the west.

They seem to be. I've managed to connect to my Windows XP box after 10.3.3 for the first time since the Panther release.
F13-F15 do not map very reliably. I don't know why they shouldn't, but F13=PrintScreen in particular was highly problematic on my Apple keyboard. I had to plug the PS2-type keyboard back in or install software to get screenshots for documentation.

And why three video editing apps?
That's exactly what I said, if you actually read my post. I said the software Apple turned into their DVD app originally had a Windows application.
Obviously, turning it into Apple's DVD app involved a hell of a lot of changes.

Beg pardon! I meant DVD Studio Pro, not Final Cut Pro. At least, I think I did. Apple's video products are hella confusing...
