Perhaps that is how it should be. Winning conventional battles is the job of our military. Putting down insurgency and occupying countries is not.
The purpose of the US military is to defend this country, it is not (or at least should not be) our way to invade other countries and force their civilian populations to submit to our rule. Perhaps rather than asking how to make the military better at this mission, we should observe that this isn't why the people of the United States chose to finance our military machine, and this is not the reason that many of our soldiers signed up to serve their country.
LOL, well, it's not the REASON I stayed up, but you do have a point. Although, I think those two mods would be more appropriate if they were switched. I don't see how the very first post can be all that redundant, and I REALLY don't see how being honest about my motives was trolling, but whatever.
No hard feelings, but I would be amused to hear the moderator's motives, out of simple curiosity.
Eh, it's just the first time I've stayed up late enough to squeeze in a first post, so I wanted to come up with something at least vaugly clever enough to make it worth posting, but not take so long that I miss the opportunity.
Added benefit of depriving your customers of any money they may have before they get the chance to spend it on your competitors.
If every industry did this, our legal system would become much more efficient, since the money would go to the companies that could sue their customers dry first. Natural selection would favor quick settlements.
Yes, that is crazy. I mean, clearly, a Berretta with one 11 round clip is MUCH more dangerous than a Berretta with two 10 round clips...
I would like to invite the people who jump on the "Let's ban the assualt weapons" bandwagon to actually read that piece of legislation. "Assult weapon" was a term that HAD no definition prior to that ban. Basically, most of the items banned were COSMETIC FEATURES. We banned guns because they look like military rifles.
Read California's legislation on Assult Weapons... you will find one of the banned features is "any device designed to prevent the hand from being burned" or some such.
Machine guns, automatic weapons, and such have been banned since at least the 60's. That hasn't changed with the expiration of this ban. What has changed is that people can now have small calliber rifles that look like military weapons. Whoopty fucking do.
In order to use/own a gun, you have to register and submit to a background check because lobbyists who like this idea pushed it through. Later, this gives them a handy list of people to disarm when they succeed in that too. Registration has been a precurser to confiscation very frequently in history.
So, extend this to file sharing.... we register everyone in preparation for tracking them down and shutting them down later.
That's because smart people that take seriously the ideas of the founding fathers and the importance of limited national goverment all voted libertarian.
And THEY didn't lose to the socialists.
Yeah, I noticed the typo after I submitted (yes, I previewed). I think I mean "defeating".
I'd add my own reasons for voting libertarian in this election. If the libertarians (well, the more moderate, slightly less crazy ones) had a decent chance of winning, I'd vote for them always. If there is a tolerable Republican, I tend to vote for them. This election, I'll be throwing my vote away on a third party in order to give some feedback to the Bush administration -- ie, "You lost the election in part because the far right deserted you" -- in hopes that we have an actual small-government candidate in 2008. If sending this message requires four years of Kerry, then so be it.
Let me preface this question by saying I plan to vote for you at this point.
Realistically, though, you must know that your odds of defeated one of the two major parties are (sadly) quite low. Given that, what other goals do you hope to accomplish with this campaign? What positive influence do you hope to effect upon the country by doing what you are doing?
Well, it would appear that I was forming an opinion based on outdated information. I thank you for the update.
I heard a few complaints on another slashdot thread complaining about Steam, so I Googled it... apparently the major complaints I found have long since been addressed.
If nothing else, I guess that elevates Valve even higher in my eyes... yes, it would appear that they released a flawed product, but they actually LISTENED to the user base.
Thanks again for the info. If I still had mod points, I'd give them to you.:)
I was looking forward to this too, then I started doing some research on what "Steam" is. I quit playing counterstrike over a year ago, back when WON was still being used.
Let's just say I'm extremely dissapointed in Valve for where they have taken this. I wouldn't hold your breath on mods, either. This game is now DRM'd to the hilt... making and finding mods just got a lot more difficult, as did running a creative server.
I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I may actually pass on this one. I have no desire to need to be constantly connected to the 'net to play a single player game that I paid for, or to play LAN games with my friends. There is no excuse for them to need to be "working on" allowing access to the game you bought.
I think the real purpose is not to offer a substitute girlfriend for single guys... it's to remind them WHY they are single, and help them feel good about it.
He was much younger when he wrote snow crash, and yes, it does show. The only reason I got through Cryptonomicon is that I didn't notice it was by the same author...
Definately check out Cryptonomicon... it is one of the more entertaining books I've read in awhile. I can't wait for Quicksilver to become available in paperback.
Right... since MS has a near total monopoly on PC software, any suggestion for the use of software that is non-MS becomes "Anti-microsoft" for the simple reason that this is what the user must be switching FROM.
If we had, say, three browsers each eating up a third of the market, and suggested a new one, we wouldn't be bashing anyone, but somehow, since MS has a monopoly, we suddenly become biased for suggesting alternatives?
Hmmm... slashdot effect for a good cause?
We should all use the "Contact us" form on their website to ask them how one might go about actually ordering their vaporware.
Surely, if they are suing everyone that is infringing their patent, they MUST have a competing product to offer... right?

I hadn't thought about that. Of course, it's pretty sad that I have to cross my fingers for my comment to get a '1'. :)

Hmmm... Yellow dog linux, the distro for computers named after a red fruit.
Why not make an iBike? It would be slightly more expensive, but much sleeker and more stylish.

In Soviet Russia, YOU flash the mob. :)
Where would all the libertarians live?
Can we have Arizona? It's pretty.
Hmmm... a noncausal mouse.
We could use an infinate number of them to finally build an ideal lowpass filter...
(Sorry, too much signals homework this weekend).

I had a similar problem with the Macrovision and an old TV. Ironically, pirated DVD's work just fine.
So... the copy protection prevents me from playing legitimate movies, forcing me to make a pirated copy if I want to watch the film.

Does it look to anyone else like the kid with the shotgun is trying to kill off the baby?

No... it's a really ugly mix of "laid" and "BO".
Never a good combination

I think I'd read anything by a guy that is able to make a mathematical plot out of the main character's labido.
