Of course there's all the stuff that terrorists want you to do, but governments need terrorists too.
Want the citizens to give up some freedom/pay some new tax/whatever? Easy! Play the terrorism trump card.
Without some Evil Empire force (that the US plays so well), it is very hard for terrorists to get the emotions going either. Terrorists & empire building governments need each other.
On the street where I live, there are a bunch of people who live in garbage cans. I blame Sesame Street!
There is nothing wrong with letting your kids see inappropriate behavior (eg. smoking or living in garbage cans), so long as they know not to do it themselves. They get to know what is right and wrong by internalizing a set of "values". They won't build up these values without some exposure. They also need to be able to talk about stuff too.
The actual combustion part of nukes is pretty clean, but as parent says, handling the waste stream is a huge problem. Every little bit of clothing etc that gets used becomes waste and once you shut a nuke station down you have a huge chunk of waste on your hands. By comparison, with any other generation technology you can just call in the scrap iron merchants etc and recycle it. Then of course there's handling the actual nuke waste too.
The mining/extraction is a big problem too since you're dealing with pretty nasty stuff. Coal mining is no walk in the park, but uranium mining is a lot worse.
Any comments on how clean a technology is need to look at the whole lifecycle not just on the smokestack emmissions.
Who needs Windows sodium chloride: Us open source people make our own. Just give us hydrochoric acid and sodium hydroxide and we'll make... AAAAAAGGGGHHHH
Any system is only as good as the way it is used. A paper system can be screwed up by "losing" sacks of papers, deliberate miscounting and the interpretation of hanging chads.
You can verify the code in an open source system, but it can still have its disk wiped or be disconnected from the backend server so that the votes don't count etc etc.
How can MULTICS be called the Father Of Unix? Sure, Multics brought some interesting ideas to the party and qualifies for "Unix's Crazy Uncle MULTICS", but a close genetic connection is hard to see.
Far too much gets said about this "Soldier is a knowledge worker" stuff. When it comes down to it, the obvious reason that USD dominated in Iraq is due to Brute Force (TM): firing more shells and dropping more bombs.
As always, the people who win wars are the ones who can mobilise the biggest armies and most equipment. Storemen win more wars than infantrymen. Hollywood might let you think that winning is due to six navy seals called "Bad karma leader", but real war is a lot more boring than that.
Sure, some technology does make it easier to be a soldier (point-and-shoot weapons), but a lot of it makes the soldier's work much harder. That's a lot of the reason that training now is 5x or more what it was during WW2.
The minitary need to keep their internal PR machine going. The military soak up a huge amount of the US budget, yet are slipping up. They need to keep selling to the US public to keep getting funding and keeping the generals and admirals from getting fired.
I don't share your optimism. I have dealt closely with MS on three very different areas of computing (certain low-level kernel stuff and some client server stuff). In all cases I was shocked at how poorly the people understood their subject matter.
Now I don't know what the crypto folk are like, but I have yet to see any real evidence to suggest that they'd be any better.
You don't need much power to run a very small 8-bit micro, enough to wake a sleeping monitor. We're talking about nano Amps here. A cheap capacitor can keep that going for months.
The biggest wastage in taditional designs is that they use switch mode power supplies designed to run at full power. They don't operate very efficiently at very low (standby) power. It is far better to completely turn off the power supply and just use a local capacitor to keep the micro going.
Most use some sort of supervisory micro or other electronics to sense you pressing the power switch etc. It might draw very little power, but it isn't nothing.
These kids don't need computers and games. What they need is Madonna or some other celebrity to come visit them!
Having lived in a 3rd world country for 30 years, I think it amazing that some jack-ass from a gaming company thinks he can fix the third world by sending them games. If you want to really help, donate to some outfit that helps teach appropriate technology: well digging etc, or how to plant vegetables and grow their own food.
How are wooden knobs any sillier than that geeky waste: the modded PC case.

Those were the days!

Killing the CPU that controls the brakes, or randomly firing an airbag/ gearbox system, might not be clever either.
As reported in The Register, this is all likely to be shit of the bull and more useful for military use than police use.
Sure you can kill the clock if you want, that won't stop me!
No electronics to kill.

I made them believe it was a hardware problem!

I have this urge to snack!
It seems crazy that the data centres seem to run in hot states. Surely Alaska would be better? C'mon Alaska, get the tax-breaks right.

If it is performing as an antenna then it will have the same RF characteristics as a physical antenna and so must be open to jamming.

Condoms make excellent tile covers.
They won't chace Windows users because there's no mount. They will chase *nix users though.
C'mon. Machine designed by engineer breaks and kills people. How can this **not** a design failure.
