  1. Re:Guns on An Unbiased Analysis of Gun Crime vs. Gun Control? · · Score: 1

I also have a good use for my guns: Putting food on the table.

I know i can just go to the grocery store, or just to the barn (god, living on a farm rules!) and either buy or kill one of my own cows, but that isn't venison, or grouse, or wild turkey (very different) or squirrel, or woodchuck (yes, it's edible), or duck, or goose (also different than their commercial equivalents).
The only way I can have any of those succulent meats is to go out, track one down (or happen across one, like I did Saturday to a whitetail doe) and pull the trigger.

I do not have delusions of using my Ruger .270, my Marlin .22WMR, my Mossberg 12 ga, or my Traditions .50 cal to shoot another man, self defence or homicide, but i do know how to use every one of them (and many more) properly, and fire them accurately within their respective ranges.

In my book, i have a very good use for my guns, and you WILL have to pry them from my cold dead hands if you want to take them away (albeit i'll probably be trying to use them one last time before they're confiscated, die in the forest in some tragic accident, and won't have to fire a single shot in anger.)

at my university, we are taking advantage of the fact that XP pro comes with a 2k pro license. currently, all the student-used computers are running 2k, but every different IT sub-department (several through the campus) has at least one or two boxes running XP pro, being tested for reliability and usability in the future. it's not happening yet, but in 1-2 years, there will be a campus wide switch to XP.

in conclusion: my school (as well as many other IT departments i know of) are getting good and ready to release XP to the cube-based user, and they're making damn sure that it will work when they do switch.

  14. The whole point: on Ideas for a Recording Industry Alternative? · · Score: 1

I believe the whole point is the following: the independent bands need exposure. if you are willing to wade through the crap to find good bands, you will be willing to pay for more music from said good band. eventually, if enough people believe the band is a good band, they (theoretically) have a chance at a recording contract, and become a mainstream band. otherwise, you end up with mainstream bands that were chosen by the label instead of the people (read boy bands/teenie pop)

thus, it's our civic duty to listen to indie bands, helping the world by sorting through the masses to find the good.
