We're talking America here, the land of city slickers driving F250's and Suburbans so the family of 4 can make it over the speed-bumps in Walmart's parking lots. Yeah, we all know Metro Transit sucks, and that the Light-Rail system is more for putting on a good show than anything else. What I don't get is why we tore up our street-car lines when we started putting in 94, 494, and 694, only to have a group go "We've got a brilliant idea, let's put in street cars!" 50 years later....

  8. What is a "Home Media Center?" on Building a Linux Home Media Center · · Score: 1

Really, it all depends on what the device is going to be used for. I have been planning on making a unit for a while, and here is what I will use it for, and here are my requirements:
Useage: Playing music, and only music, through a receiver.

    Requirements:
    Storage: Preferably at least 200GB.
Sound quality: Very good - meaning outstanding Linux support and digital optical out.
Noise: silent. There's no point in listening to FLAC files if you have to overpower the machine with the music.
Interaction: wireless remote - shouldn't be too complicated, basically a DVD player's remote, but with even less buttons.
Speed: How fast it boots up - I don't want to have to wait more than 10 seconds, which means that POST better take no time at all, and that kernel better load quickley as well.

    Extra-nice touchs:
A case that I fabricate myself to blend in with stereo equipment
LED display like those on CD and DVD players in addition to the on-screen display/navigation.

Why I havn't built it yet:
    1) Price - it's too expensive for a college student to have a PSU that doesn't need a fan, and good sound cards cost too much money for said group. With the parts available today (which I wouldn't even want to use, read #2), I would have to spend over $700, which is a lot of money right now for me to listen to music.
    2) Availability of parts - I don't want to build one of these until we have solid-state storage that has the capacities I want, and at a moderate price.

Linux is ready for corporate use. Except for IT, nobody needs to get under the hood for 99.9% of corporations. All that needs to be done is have speciality software ported over to Linux, and have IT lockdown the system so that the average user can't mess things up. At the bank I work at, we use 2 tools that are installed on the computer, and one that's web-based. One tools is where we run all of our transactions, one is a suite of programs where we look up accounts, statuses, and anything else related to the account, and the web-based is to look up signature cards. If we (since the bank I work at owns the software company that produces our software) made Linux ports for the transaction program and the inquery suite, we could port to Linux without any problems. The only thing I can think of right now for why we haven't is because we haven't had a need. For us, what we have works. I've never had Win2K freeze up on me, and the only problems I've had with the computer are with the programs that my bank made. Now, I suppose once Microsoft stops supporting Win2K, my bank might have a reason to make the switch, but for right now, it would be an un-necessary cost.
