    This may change this year at the conference. Not that I really care either way. My code sucks right now, maybe 5-7 wpm, code is o.k. but I'm not really as into it as some are. Eventually they'll drop it though I think. Make the written tests harder, code is the only mode they do a hands on test for which seems a bit rediculous today. PSK31 is really taking off though....

    Did everyone forget about all the passengers on the 9/11 flights that called their loved ones before the bastards crashed the planes? Those calls didn't bring those planes down. I hate cell phones (don't own one, never will unless they do away with regular phones) but I don't believe they effect aircraft while in flight. It cracks me up that cell phone users can't seem to take the damn thing away from their ears for more than 2 minutes. I see morons talking in grocery stores, leaving college classrooms to answer them, walking in malls, it's a sickness IMHO.

    Don't worry, you can already see pictures of actual pieces of the meteorites and HAVE pieces of these within' a few days. They will be on the market probably in the next day or so.     Let's not forget something here, Mission control can only handle ONE mission at a time. They can't do 2. You'd need 2 complete sets of MCs to launch a "rescue" shuttle. People are already bitching about the cost of space flight, then when something like this happens they bitch because we didn't spend enough on it. NASA can not win. The general public has no clue what it takes to do a space mission. They also have no clue about all the benefits we got from it.

    You can already receive sat images off the HF bands if you have the right gear. It's slow but doable.

    Actually hand held ham radios (known as "HTs") can have a max power of 7 watts, most have 5 and are run through an outside antenna (when mobile) which is further away from your head than a cell phone's. Most hams use a regular mobile rig in the car running higher power,10-50 watts.

    You're not the only one. I don't have one and I have no intention of ever getting one unless they do away with standard telephones. It amazes me how many people now have cellphones. Every person I talk to about them say they got it for "emergency use". Riiiiight. I see moron students in college leave a class to go into the hall to answer their phone and shoot the crap with their buddy or girlfriend. If I'm a teacher I break their phone on them if it isn't an emergency call. It's total nonsense. I see these morons talking in grocery stores, malls, you name it their talking on them. I heard Larry Fishburn in the middle of his play heard a cellphone go off and told the person to "Shut the F&*king cellphone off". Several broadway actors have had to do the same thing. I think these people need to be beaten senseless. Wait, they're already senseless..... Just once I'd like to see someone grab another's cellphone and smash it to smithereens. I'd applaud.

    Mir was originally designed to last 5 years. It lasted 13. Pretty darn good. It had it's share of problems but the Russians did real well with it. I'll never forget talking to John Blaha on Mir over ham radio back in 1997. Talk about exciting! Also many,many packet connects/contacts via Mir. I miss the old bird...

    I love guys like you, Macs use the SAME guts as any other PC out there. You think they have some secret stash(tm) of high quality parts? I'm typing this on an almost 7 year old Dell running Suse 8 Linux. It's FASTER than my 500mhz ibook with 320m of RAM in it and this machine only has 192m of RAM. I bought the ibook to try out and play with, it was their most competitve computer at the time. It's nice and all (I use OS9.2 on it since 10 is slow as a dog) but Apple uses the same crap in their machines as anyone else. I love it when you people try that lame ass line.

    More people use Windows because that's what they have been used to using all these years. They "know" Windows and getting them to switch is always going to be hard to do. I switched but the average "joe" won't for the most part. It's going to take a long time to get a lot people to try Linux. I love it but most people I talk to are afraid of it. "Too hard", "Too complicated",etc.

    I have a 500mhz ibook and 10 is slow as hell. 9.2 is pretty fast though and I prefer it more than 10. I have Suse 8 on my old Dell D300 and it's fast. I'll get a regular laptop pc eventually and throw Linux on it. The ibook is a pretty nice machine, the only one IMHO worth getting if you want to try a Mac. It'll probably the only Mac I buy.

    I have a 500Mhz ibook. My Dell D300 machine (300Mhz) is MUCH faster than the ibook. The ibook has 320m of RAM, the Dell, 192m. I really like the ibook but it's not that fast. Usable but not fast. Using either 10 or 9.2. 9.2 is MUCH faster though than 10.

    1 - The ISS is in a totally different orbit and the shuttle does not have enough fuel to get there, stop and come back. 2 - How do you dock to the ISS? No docking port on Columbia. How do you get them IN the ISS? Not enough spacesuits onboard. No SAFER suits either. 3 - Takes too long to ready and Mission control can only handle ONE mission at a time. They are not set up to do 2 missions at once.

    First of all the Russian ship was schedualed to go up with supplies anyway. It takes a lot longer than 24 hours to get one ready. Secondly, the shuttle is a lot more complex than a blackhawk and you lost 7 people.

    Well, if new Macs can't run OS 9 in the future I've got my one and only Mac I'll ever have. I bought an ibook in August of 2001 and hate OS 10, slow as a dog, even with 320m of RAM. I don't want to hear "get more RAM" either, that's nonsense. I have Suse 8 running on a almost 6 year old Dell D300 with 192m of RAM and it screams. Stevie strikes again.He'll never learn. I'll use the ibook until it dies and that'll be my last Mac. Oh well, I'm using Suse 8 more and more every day anyway. I LOVE it.

    Correct. They use 2 methods, one where they measure the star's light curve and the other the classic wobble effect as the suspected planet graviationally tugs on the star. Then they measure the time intervals between occurances to determine if it's happening at regular intervals. There are bound to be a few instances where they may misjudge. I'll bet for the most part the majority of planets found so far ARE indeed planets. I can see where LARGE sunspots on the star may fool the light curve method, some very large spots can last several rotations of the star. In any case this is really exciting stuff!

    You obviously are thinking 90's Linux. Mandrake and Suse are CAKE to install and use. I'm new to Linux, I installed Suse 8 3 months ago and LOVE IT. I haven't had to "screw around" with the config files at all. Suse is as usable as Winblows and OS 10. OS 10 sucks. Slow as a dog IMHO. Linux has come a long way in the last few years.

    If you don't want to run the software you're screwed. With a PC you DO have a choice of OS. You could run Winders or Linux or whatever. With the new Macs you'll either run 10 or you are screwed. Nice job Steve! Alienate your users! GREAT marketing idea! I hope the rumor is false otherwise my ibook will be the last Mac I ever buy. I'll stick with real Linux.
