  3. Thin ice on SpamSlayer - should we DDOS spammers? · · Score: 1

Two of the companies I worked for were classified as spammers. One earned the title rightly for one month's worth of email ten years ago, the other earned the title because of a VP who liked to forward jokes to everyone he knows.

In each case, just that designation made it hard to do business. The domain name for each company was blacklisted in some places, including Yahoo. For a technology company, losing the ability to send email to real customers is a curse.

Even posting on message boards online (ahem) has gotten my email address (not associated with the above companies) used as a spam reply to. I get please remove messages from people, bounced SPAM, etc. It's to the point Yahoo even randomly checks my ID to see if I'm really a person. I'm paying the price for these spammers to do business. Should I pay more of a price because I post to usenet? Should people flood my email account with malware because someone else used my address as a replyto?

The problem with SPAM is it works and works well. It costs a few dollars to generate thousands of leads, meaning if you sell one thing to one of them, you make money. The month of SPAM was how that first company really got it's start, after that it went to more traditional forms of marketing. Only once SPAM stops working will the problem go away. Odds are against that happening. People are too stupid. Violent methods of stopping SPAM hurt everyone, more than SPAM itself does. That's a little like saying if we shoot drug smugglers, they'll stop sending drugs. And, established SPAMers make much more than drug runners.

  7. Re:Leasing for tax purposes on Is Leasing Really Worth It? · · Score: 1

Not just if the cost is deductible, but how it is deductible is a question. If the deduction takes the form of depreciation, as capital often does here in the States, leasing something means you can take the write off immediately, instead of having to write off the depreciated value of the asset over several years. Even if leasing costs more, if the money "gained" by the deduction of a lease grows to a greater value than the money "gained" in the duduction of depreciated value over several years, leasing is a good option.

Of course, if you've never depreciated anything and can pay cash, you stand to do better if you buy. The question comes in almost only for corporations. If you have a team of accountants trying to calulate depreciated values for deductions, by simplifying in a lease and saving fees to the accountants, you save money again. It takes a lot of effort (ie, money) for a corporation to keep track of hundreds of thousands of depreciable assets.

Another consideration is if you have to finance something.... Leasing with an immediate write off versus buying something at double digit interest where you get to write off the interest and depreciation get's strange.

We know the equipment is intrinsically valuable. But, it has no real book value. Which is why we were looking for a museum type arrangement. Several good leads here though.... Gotta be someone here dreaming of this stuff. The idea of cleaning up and testing these hundreds of tubes one at a time, selling them for a dollar or so a piece on eBay with three dollars shipping is a nightmare none of us want.

This system is the test system. The primary communications systems of this satelite are Ka band and X Band radio signals. LASER communications systems, according to the article, are already in use in space by the Pentagon. I thought it was funny though the LASER test system represented most of the cost of the mission. They want to see how much the sun interfers etc. This system is a precursor to an actual system launch, which would have in space listening/broadcast posts.

Also, most of the listening posts they have designated are already equiped with spectrum analyzers, which would allow us to find any unexpected frequencies and build the new equipment to monitor the signal.

Third, the Hyugens probe was almost lost because of this exact issue. Although Cassini can detect dopler shifts and track them, the Hyugens probes doppler shift would also change the BAUD rate along with the frequency, which the receiver firmware could not compensate for. They had to change Cassini fly path around Saturn to eliminate the doppler shift. This would have been a simple firmware upgrade on Earth, but the problem was not found/proven until the probe was in transit. Thankfully with this test system the receiver will be on earth and we can compensate.

Including the Russians in a plan to get to the moon or Mars is foolhardy, but on no part the Russians fault. The IIS is next-to-useless for any Moon or Mars mission because of the incredibly high orbit angle, around 51 degrees, that was required to include Russian launch capabilities. Because the Russians can not launch from their current facilities to a lower angle of orbit (5-10 degress) that would be required get to the moon or Mars, going to the moon or Mars almost automatically eliminates current Russian participation. The Russians have to launch on an almost polar orbit so the lower stages of their rockets will not come crashing down on China/Japan.

Now, the Russians could build a rocket system that is so large the stages burn up on reentry (like Energia) or rebuild their launching facilities in the far north almost arctic area (which would also require large rockets), or they can build a sea launch facility. None of which is about to happen.

Clinton hobbled the IIS by making the orbit suitable to the Russians. But, in doing that he made the ISS truely international. Otherwise it would have been US etc. But, it would have been able to prepare for trips to Mars/Moon. Which is more important? I don't know...

How about canceling the CRV. Sure, a real value at only $20 million a pop. The thing took $2 billion to design and only required a $400 million shuttle launch to put into orbit.

    • Cooling Spirit off. Temperatures atop the metallic lander are warmer than expected, so the scientists on Earth are working to keep the probe cooler. Limiting the use of one antenna cooled Spirit slightly.
