As a tall, intelligent, orc like creature I have to wonder what the author of the article looks like: tall and waiflike or small and troll like? Big eyes and pert tits are fine and dandy until the eyes start sagging and the tits follow you around the room...
I thought the rules were pale people in the north areas or places people wear a lot of clothes, dark people in the south or places people don't wear much clothes. Tall people in carnivor communities. Short people in vegetarian communities. Hairless people in coastal areas. Hairy people in inland areas. Big noses in mountain regions. Small noses in low-altitude areas. Intelligence is an abberration.
Of course, all of the rules do not apply to France. Where the tall, blonde, nordic people were killed off during the Napoleanic wars because he liked to put them in the front....
This has already been done in humans, to a degree. Something similar to this is done in treating brain anuerisms when caught early. They redirect the blood and chill it, slowly lowering the body to 70 degrees. Where, all brain function and heart function stop. By controlling this, they can surgically remove the anuerism before it bursts, which they couldn't do when the person is 'awake'. It's not really suspended animation, because the machine is pumping your blood and breathing for your. Unlike these pigs where I presume the stop everything for the hour or two and don't have a machine.
The ethical considerations of this short term procedure are more legal than anything else. Although there is the hipocratic oath in which doctors swear to do no harm where this practially kills people (even though things like surgery actually violate the oath...). In many states, the definition of dead includes when brain activity ceases. So, procedures like what I mentioned above can not be performed on people in those states. Common use of this procedure would change the definition of dead dramatically. Also ethical from a religious perspective. Although most people would say do this if necessary. What happens if a doctor does this without permission to someone who will not even take a blood donation because of their faith? This also had the unfortunate situation of being a 'neat' idea. 'neat' ideas in a hospital setting are dangerous.
And, you all are ignoring the emphasis on the word sticky in the phrase sticky ethical problems. Filling a chest with salty, nutrient rich, viscous fluid just plain sounds perverse....
That's the problem with American's, they aren't really from anywhere. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's a duck. The fact that he has lived elsewhere doesn't matter, especially when discussing the way he speaks. Bush is more Texan than Hillary is New Yorker.
I said the name means seventh month. I didn't specificy which languages the roots were from.
Pinyin has uses beyond childrens books. It is used on street signs and is an official method of transliteration by several governments. When it first started appearing on official signs and documents there were riots as people burned the signs (look for Pinyin):
http://www.chinaweblog.com/archives/2002/10/ . The work then wasn't to replace written Chinese. But, the fact there there were riots when it was introduced in a simplification effort is true.
You have attacked the semantics of my post without adding anything to the content.
Just because it makes sense now is not a reason. Things are made unintelligable with time. People attempt to draw distinctions between things and change them subtley. Time compounds the issue. A significant advantage must be shown before doing this. Even simple reality makes things change. China is reforming the written language out of necessity, because becoming literate in classic Chinese takes almost a decade. Latin is easier... Shaving a year or two off of this schedule means more time for real learning. Words are pronounced differently a year from now, in different places, even by people who attend different schools. I wouldn't want people with 'Harvard' accents dictating spelling, I live in Texas. I'm sure people at Harvard would equally hate the idea of someone from Texas like Bush dictating the dictionary.
For example, months in many languages are counted. First Month instead of January, second month instead of February, and so on. This used to be the case in English. But, the start of the year was changed to reflect the solar calendar instead of a lunar calendar, and the months no longer made sense. What was the seventh month of the year, was now the 9th month of the year and so on. The names September, October, November, and December each mean seventh month, eigth month, ninth month, and tenth month respectively. Even though they are in fact the 9th - 12th months.
Adding 'engineered' changes only add to the confusion long term. Not only do people have to deal with tense and style changes, but forcing more changes on top of it only makes problems worse. Words gain meaning with time. This will happen whether we try to temporarily fix it or not.
This is no better than the political correctness debates. A word which may be proper and make sense one year quickly gains meaning in both positive and negative connotations until many are unwilling to use a word. The end result of not accepting this additional meaning is that old written language quickly becomes unintelligible. Forcing change makes the issue worse. The Chinese had riots when they briefly tried switching to the latin alphabet in the 50s.
A big part of the reason the Chinese stopped switching to a phonetic alphabet is it would in many ways destroy their national identity. Mandarin is spoken very differently from Cantonese. But, they largely can understand each others writing. If they had switched to a completely phonetic system, there would be very little tying that nation together. Written Chinese is more like spoken Mandarin from a few hundred years ago. Not even regular Mandarin speakers would be able to read a phonetic version of what was spoken a few years ago.
English is an evolved language. Because of this, it is easy to start but hard to master. It will continue to evolve.
A few years later: Tokyo is 'lost' after the giant sunscreen is blown to earth by solar winds, covering up all of Honshu island... The giant reflective shield blocks out all heat, light, radio signals, air, but conducts elictricity so many are electrocuted. All of the worlds scientists whom built the block would figure out a way to help the dying/freezing/suffocating Japanese but the world is too busy laughing.... Imagine it, most of Japan destroyed by a giant sheet of mylar. Is known to future generations as the Great Tokyo Jiffy-Pop Disaster.
I've never had a panic attack; I just suffer from anxiety. Strange how some of my best moments turn into anxious nightmares really fast. When I start getting anxious about tests or work, I sit back and think about it from this perspective. If I can list how and why I got questions wrong, or why I can't figure out a question, I realize I'm probably doing better than the other students. Knowing where you are getting behind, is better than people who never really realize they are behind. Once I realize I've probably set the curve, I relax and take the rest of the period to check and do what I can. Thinking to myself that I know what is going on, makes some of the best moments of my life. Especially when they let me relax on some of the best days of my life. You could laugh and think that the panic is just a sign you are getting warmed up. Those tests do matter, but in the end you will not remember most of them, even a few months from now. Doing the best you can and the best of anyone around you, should be an awesome feeling. If it is not a great feeling, pretend it is one and you'll fool yourself pretty quickly. YMMV
'Lefty's have no more claim on reason and facts than 'righty's have a claim on character and attitude. It is as easy for a lefty to dismiss facts as it is for a righty to dismiss character. Frequenty, when I bring up 'global warming' facts like lack of monitoring of the sun, the shrinking of icecaps on Mars, historical periods in which C02 trends which do not match up with global temperatures, or green fields in Green Land I am dismissed with a 'I'm not sure what you are trying to say' or 'that is not what I'm worried/talking about'. It is as easy to belittle facts as it is to belittle character, doing either of which indicates a shallow mind.
Every fact which can be brought up to counter any part of the C02 causes global warming argument is promptly dismissed by people who like the idea of C02 caused global warming. It is easy to chose facts to prove an argument; There are an infinite number to chose from. Just saying that people around me can't agree on the cause, I was told I know a lot of ignorant people. The reality is, people should use and waste less resources, regardless of which specific consequences they are worried about. We hardly need to 'predict' doom, when consequences like carcinogenic pollution, loss of use of land, unreasonable expense, are all around us. Rightys do not have a monopoly on ignorance.
There was a mini-ice age in the 1700's believed to be related to lower solar activity. All this means is we have returned to pre-mini-ice-age temperatures. I don't know of anyone that does not accept global warming (as in the warming of regions of the earth). I know a lot of people which can't agree on the causes. Temperatures were warmer 1000 years ago. The reason the vikings were so active from Norway was that they had mild temperatures up there, warmer than now. Cyclical Global warming != greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases effect may play a part, but the biggest variable (the sun) is not yet being realistically tracked.
This is exactly why the government shouldn't keep personal info. Yes, they have to keep personel info. But, imagine if the data walked home with was call records. Or, call transcripts. Or, banking information.... I'm not worried about a benign competent government having my information. I'm worried about the real world situations and real people that data would encounter. This isn't even getting into malice on the part of government officials. Heard a military officer say, whenever you are dealing with more than two or three hundred people, you will have a few scumbags. Now, how many scumbags is that in a government which employes millions of people? Or any major corporation/church/university/institution....
One of my junior high-school foreign language teachers said she did not learn English grammar, and learn to view grammar rules in context, until she learned a foreign language. That has held very true for me. Learning a foreign language forces you to separate in your mind what you mean, how you communicate, and how to perfect the two. You look at the English language very differently when heard in the context of another language.
Learning to communicate is a little like solving writers block. The solution is to just do it, and to just use it. If you don't, you can't. Share your notes, type up your notes after you are finished with them, contribute to/create your office/school/group wiki. Even if you are communicating things already known, it helps to hone your ability to communicate.
Sometimes all you need is a theme. Start thinking about your work, and put it into different philosophical themes. This adds depth and perspective to your work, regardless of whether you even take the theme seriously. Even though I am an atheist, being a space geek it is interesting to put problems in the perspective of astrology. Sometimes, medical analogies can be very useful. Sometimes, challenge them to use semi-random words in their communications. Give them a list of terms and make them use them constructively. I knew a sales team which would have a word of the day to keep their pitches from being too dry. "Today's word is 'yellow'."
And yes, the most important thing is to keep reading.
PS, challenge your students to not use indefinite pronouns. One of the best ways to clarify thoughts/documents to do declare war on words like: it, this, these, those, they.... (ala Catch-22); very important in precise documents. Also avoid more complex, but still indefinite phrases like 'that object', or 'those lines'.
Although I'm against global warming zealotry (and think this is no better than the pending ice age story in the sixties), there's a hole in your argument. In the sixties/seventies when the first real pictures were coming back, Mars underwent a global dust storm. In a sense, a nuclear winter. At that time, presumably, the ice caps grew. Since we don't have real/quantifiable information from before that point, we can't say whether the melting is a result of global warming or a return to the norm.

While this message my come as a surprise to you, I have spent extensive time trying to port MS Windows applications to Linux. After my company (Loki Software) went bankrupt, the CEO mistakingly transferred $100m (One Hundred Million US Dollars) to my Nigerian bank account and I am looking for a partner in transferring this money back to the United States. In exchange for this service....
I guess the American Government really is behind the times. American Corporations spent the latter part of the 20th century spending pork on technology, this is no longer in style.... Much of it was wasted on pet projects then as in the government now. Next you know they'll be working on special pens that work in outer space!
At last! A reasonable explanation of the creepy moaning, thumping, and gunfire sounds coming from my neighbors apartment! They're beta testers! Still doesn't explain the polka music though, or does it.... What is the sound track like for this thing?
The movie was great. I was a little disappointed in the start, nothing more than nuevo-kung fu action. But, as soon as the story actually get's going it's riveting from there on in. The movie is not a re-interpretation of the series or a continuation, to me it was more of an explanation and a conclusion. If you looked at the Aeon Flux animated series as trash, you will not like this movie. If you looked at the Aeon Flux animated series as pure action, you will not like the movie that much (costumes aren't skimpy enough, and the scenes are too pretty, the animated series, was, well, disgusting and morbid...). If you looked at the series as a precursor for something more, this movie is that conclusion. It's always interesting to see mind benders like the series come out making sense, this is one of those rare times when they pulled it off. Why is Trevor Goodchild a good/bad guy? Why does everyone (including Aeon) keep dying? How will it all end? What is the point? Also, one warning, a Yahoo individual review said that this is an art film, if you can't stand art films you shouldn't see the movie. First, have a long heart to heart talk with your trusted co-workers. See what they think, don't really say you are looking to do part time work, but ask about people who have. They'll lead you in the direction of whether your company supports it or does not (some of them might even have leads). Second, have a heart to heart talk with your boss, what do they think (they might even have leads)? Third, ask yourself, if you can't do your first job, can you really do a second one. Fourth, ask yourself, do I have any leads? It's all about networking. Also, try putting in that many more hours at work or on a personal project. If you can't realistically, regulary, put 10-15 hours a week into a personal project, how can you expect to put that many into a part time job? If you are just bored, get a part time job somewhere. The neighborhood Burgar Barn might seem boring, but they are always hiring, and you'll get enough stories to last a lifetime.
Prepare to have the internet as we know it go away. The Europeans aren't just interested in control of the roots. They will also want to rewrite all of the 'standards'. As they have done with telephone networks in the past. As soon as the europeans started upgrading to digital standards, they immediately rewrote all of the pre-existing standards to make sense. Taking the 24 channel T-1 and making it a 32 channel E1. Sure, it made sense, but it created an unecessary incompatibility. Same goes for cellular standards. Also prepare for European style billing, where every packet is measured and metered. Wanna pay a UN Internet Tarif? Often times Europeans will want to change standards just to make them less 'American'. As they have fought over their own consititions, fearing they are becomming too Americanized in the process. I believe one constitution draft nearly caused a riot when it's title was something akin to "The United States of Europe". The American's and the Canadian's spent decades fighting over and developing these standards from scratch. The Europeans, with the benefits of the decades of that work, will create new standards (just because it makes sense, hindsite is 20/20 after all), and to make them less American. Breaking all old software and hardware compatibility in the process.
How long until the FBI's porn collection rivals the vaticans? How long until the CIA is complaining the FBI doesn't share 'information'? People who think smut has no place in culture have never discovered the joy of stick figure drawings and finger puppets! So, can we now play spot the spook at hentai fest every year? All they really have to do is bring back Janet Reno and start putting ads in huslter saying "She's watching you!" Don't even have to be pornographic....
Why would open source people need grammar checkers? All we have to do is post a message to Slashdot and it will be prodded, poked, parsed, and insulted until nothing is left, it's great! Spelling, grammar, translation, jargon checking, and even *^%hole tests are available! We don't even have to be on topic, any message can be submitted....

Was thinking 'Soylent Black' is pussy...
