The NHL is all white because the players
all come from Canada and Russia, not from
the US.
Outside of Montreal, Canada and Russia have
very few black people compared to the US.
$20 million for 10 Mw? - what they need to make
is a smaller one - I would pay 100K for a
100 kW reactor to put in my back yard.
Oh, wait, I live in Chapel Hill, and the
greenies would much rather burn tons of
coal and wood. Never mind.
I have a very large house with a lot of light
bulbs. Not only do I spend about 10 minutes
per week changing lightbulbs, but they
are constantly going out in inconvienient
places (over the phone so you can't read
the phonebook, etc).
If they are recessed into insulated spaces,
they also shut down occasionally when they
overheat. The heat from the bulbs ages the
plastic surround of the recessed lights, making
them crack and fall off.
The ones I really hate changing are 15 feet up,
so I have to drag a ladder in to change them.
If I liked the light produced by halogens, then
I would switch, but they look bad. I plan
on putting halogens in my attic and crawlspaces,
and florescent in the garage and workshop, but
I need nice looking bulbs for the main part
of the house.
Most people who talk this way have not
done any listening tests at all.
Everyone can hear the difference between
a good system and a bad one. The overly
intellectual people don't bother with the
test, they just state what they assume
is true.
Read the works of Karl Marx - the reason
that the whole communist thing started was
because of displaced workers due to the
industrial revolution. The communist manifesto
talks about this same topic in depth.
This would be the same situation. Massive
replacement and retraining of workers causes
governments to fall - we could be in for
the same treatment as the Tsars got.
I'm a libertarian, btw, not a communist, so
please spare me the "pinko bastard" flames.
Did you listen to some music before
posting this? or are you just going on
some pre-conceived notion about how
stereo equipment sounds.
I build stereo equipment as a hobby, the
differences in sound are incredible, even
from small changes to the circuit.
But most MP3 players sound the same - may
you be blessed with that sound (and no better)
all the days of your life.
About half that stuff makes sense to me.
Many of the things you wrote seem reasonable
and valid - I don't see what you are making
fun of.
For example, many pre-amps (not mine) change
character during loud transients. Opera
singers seem to jump out at you when they
hit the really high/loud notes.
A lot of the quoted statements make perfect
sense - it is just that they are having trouble
explaining their experience, and you are taking
the quotes out of context to make them look
stupid.
Slashdot is not capible of discussing high end
audio - stick to your MP3 players and surround
sound computer speakers.
Here is an idea I had about 20 years ago,
feel free to patent it and make a bunch of
money:
A digital cell phone with built in 128-bit (or
whatever) public key encription. If you
call a regular phone, it will not encode
the voice stream, but if you call another
encripted cell phone, then a the phones
would exchange encripting keys and voice
data would be encripted/decripted by the
phones.
sell them to drug dealers, or whatever.
NHT, Paradigm, PSB, JM Lab,
Kharma, Nearfield acoustics,
Piega, Audes, Martin Logan,
Magnepan, Sound Lab, Thiel,
Joseph Audio, Merlin, Reference 3A,
Odeon acoustics, Kochel,
Silverline, Coincedent,
etc.
Bose is the microsoft of audio.
All marketing and baseless lawsuits
that are to expensive to defend
against.
What if your hard drive crashes in
your IPOD or something, and you have
7500 (= $7500) songs in it?

I am a Canadian living in the US, and I think that in most ways, Canada is better than the US.
I also hate how the US bullies Canada constantly. I really hope that Canada starts legalising dope (and does whatever it wants to, without regard to US trade threats). Deefenbaker was a big weenie to give in to Kennedy about the Avro Arrow, for example.
The US needs Canadian goods (lumber, metals, electricity, etc) way more than Canada needs US goods. Bring on the trade sanctions - Sascatchewan and Alberta can feed the whole country easily. Restricted trade might help Canada, as it would foster industry there.
But I live in the US because of the lower taxes on rich people, and the fact that my wife thinks that North Carolina is too cold 8-)
If you want the best sound quality, buy a
record player.
This will attract a lot of abuse, but mostly
from people who haven't listened to records
recently, so they don't remember how good
records are.
You are attracted to CDs because they are
clean, but you don't notice how much musical
joy you are missing until you go back to LP.
The original specification for stereo was
3 channels. I don't remember the whole story,
but it was reduced to 2 channels at introduction
by marketing folks.

180 ms and 1/180 seconds (5.56 ms) are very different things. The article referenced the latter.

Do either the new or old PS/2 support VGA output somehow? I'd like to plug it straight into my projector without having a line doubler.
