It has a simple purpose. To stop unemployed Russian rocket scientists from going to Iran or North Korea for money. Think of it is as a welfare program.
The reason I mentioned Viagra is that it is easier to make money with. No one will demand that they sell it cheaply for all the poor people. It is recreational, so they can charge anything for it.Compare to AIDS drugs, which cost just as much, if not more to develop, then have people copy it without paying you a dime. If I were a drug company, and I saw my massively expensive AIDS drug being copied by someone else, I would be very unhappy. How are they meant to recoup costs?
The problem with this is that without the profit motive, big business wouldn't bother to develop life-saving drugs at all.
This has happened already with antibiotics, as they cannot make enough money from making new ones because people demand low prices. So it isn't worth their time and money to make. Why should the spend huge sums of money on something that promptly gets copied by some generic and they get no money at all?
Hence the reason things like Viagra are so popular, they can charge any amount at all, and you won't get people telling them to sell it cheap for all the poor people!
While a nice idea, there is a small problem with this. It assumes that if manned-space is killed, the money will be transferred to unmanned.
It is far more likely that they'd just remove the 12B or so from NASA, instead of reassigning it. Exactly the same amount of unmanned, and the money saved from killing manned-space would be transferred into another government department. Do you really think that the US government would allow the 12B saved to be used by NASA?
I hate that too. It's like using "ain't" or "yinz" (if you're from pittsburgh). It's not proper.
While I understand that "ain't" is often used incorrectly, why is there such a blanket dislike against it? How else are you meant to abbreviate "am not"? "Amn't"?
"I ain't going" is grammatically fine contraction of "I am not going".
And of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but tell me, what exactly gives the USA the right to force theirs on other countries? because that is exactly what the current foreign policy comes down to. You'd agree with other countries doing the same to the USA? (provided they'd have the power to do so)
I do not see how this relates. The USA is a democracy, so it has no need to have one given to it. Iraq was most definitely not a democracy. I fail to see how relieving a country of its dictator is a bad thing.
I would have preferred that Bush would have emphasized getting rid of Saddam more than WMD, but I can see why he did it. If he had concentrated on the "Getting rid of Saddam" part he would have been in a much better situation now. But, it is unlikely that he would have garnered enough support without WMDs. And the US has found chemical weapons. Not many, but more than none
I personally agree with Bush's foreign policy, but not his social/domestic policy.
Getting rid of Saddam was worth the pain, and I support doing this in further countries, though I know this is extremely unlikely as the American Public seems to be tiring of it.
My main beef with him is enviromental policy, foreign is fine. I wish there was a president who had his tough foreign-policy but more socially-liberal. But this doesn't seem to be an option.
BTW Hindenburg was _not_ covered in flash powder! That theory is dead wrong. Its main proponent made a complete fool of himself by staging a demonstration where he ignited a piece of the Hindenburg's skin with a blowtorch, and the damn thing just smoldered a little.
Where is a link to this demonstration? I found the announcement here, but nothing about this supposed failed demonstartion. Where is your source?
Wikipedia has some great information, but there are too many pages that are simply direct imports from the US census showing every tiny town in the US.
Makes browsing with Random hard when you keep on getting statistics and nothing else on endless lists of towns.
Disk is the American spelling, and so computing uses "disk" for hard/floppy drives.
However, CDs came from philips, which is European, and they have decreed that when it is circular and shiny it is a disc as they own the patent and you have to do it. Hence compact disc, laser disc, etc.
Am I the only person who thinks Quicktime is the worst choice of formats? Their player sucks and the preloader can only be stopped from autoloading by editing the registry. Even Real had an option to turn it off buried in its options menu.
To extend this further, why bother with any space exploration at all?
Using the same arguments that there are better places to spend money than space, why use probes at all, and just give it directly to laboratories?
Arguments against manned space exploration can also be applied to any other form, including robotic probes. Why spend X billion on probes when you could give it to the other activities you specify?
I think people overestimate how much is spent on Space. The first source I found on google states that $25 billion is spent of food stamps alone back in 1992, yet the total budget of nasa is a mere $16 billion.
How much would an extra $16 billion help really with the amount already spent on welfare?
This has already been fixed in the latest Trillian Patch, which also was meant to fix the yahoo problem.
Unfortunately, the patch causes Trillian to crash when logging into yahoo now.
I like this proposal, what is the official reason why reusable craft are so much better than craft like the soyuz?
I don't live in the US so the reasons why someone would prefer a big, expensive thing that only works twice a year over something cheap that is launchable many times more if the money spent on the replacement?

I take the old definition of high/low level languages: Assember is low level, and everything else is high.
I know Java does JIT, but originally it was intended to be entirely interpreted, so it higher level, as it abstracts more than say plain C.
I'm not sure how much that changes things, but just pointing out that in the book they do not get it from bones!

To improve, add RSS so you can have 9 different formats with the same name, then have someone leave in a huff and make another ;)

Sending one person not even in a full orbital is exciting how? Just because a government wasn't behind it?

I've asked Valve itself about this, but didn't get a reply. However I asked Planethalflife and got a response.
It's the first one down. Or anyone have proof it has Q2 bits in it?
As Halflife 1's engine was originally quake1, it's a bit older than 4 years.
I'm amazed with its staying power, how many other games using Quake1's engine are still being played today?
Yes I know that Valve changed 90% of Quake1's engine, but it's still based on it...
