Actually, I think it's a great idea. The fact that it's wireless lets you get it out of the 'view' of the public - no place to plug into means no lines for an outlet, or crowding around just one place.
You can take any idea too far, granted, and having wireless everywhere doesn't mean it's ok to use at every chance you get (similar to having coverage for your cell doesn't mean it's alright to start yelling into the phone (and my ear) during my dinner, or commute, etc. Compared to that, I'd take a commute on the train with 50 people clicking away instead of chattering cell phones any day.
Very good point - I don't think choosing "fewer choices" can (always) be equated with apathy or stupidity, either.
You can actually even just take it to the extreme to see how it would be a bad thing to have too many choices.
got a great idea? quick, write it down. But before I lend you a paper and pen, you've got the choice to make about what colour ink to use, ball-point or fountain. What sort of heft would that pen be needing, and exactly what grade of paper?
some of our paper has been shipped by air, some by rail, some by truck... I'm sure there's a preference...
Granted, somewhat of an extreme, but not too far off the mark.
The lock-in on the iPod Mini (and the regular iPod) is mainly coming from the direction of the iTunes Music Store. Yes, you need iTunes to use the iPod Mini, but in a few years when you sell the Mini on eBay and buy something else, you won't have to buy all your CDs again just to use that new gizmo.
This seems to be a point that people have trouble getting around - I see a lot of posts suggesting that iTunes and the iTMS are the same... one is just a method for organizing your music and the other is a music-purchasing-service.
To use the iTMS, you need to use iTunes. I'd even grant that to use the iPod, you need iTunes. HOWEVER, using iTunes by no means implies that you have to have/use an iPod or iTMS-purchased music. My entire collection of music has not one DRM'd file in it. If I decide tomorrow to use Windows Media Player or über-OGG-player2004 or whatever, it's completely portable.
Perhaps it's just because I'm insane or blind, but I can't seem to find the binaries for 1.1.1 at all. I'm busy building it from source on my work machine, but if there's a binary, that would be better.
I can only hope that you've been modded "Funny" because we're laughing at, not with you.

Although it came out sounding a touch harsh, I have to say I agree 100% with you on this one. I'm cringing at some of the advice (most of which is common sense, but I would hope that the OP was actually looking for/advice/.
Just as an addition, because I know people will bring up the problem of the controls being in a separate room - There's nothing stopping you from getting a keyboard, mouse and monitor in the same room as the mic. It's actually even an easier solution, because you're not really worried about loss of signal for the interface (in this case), so the only worry would be regarding stray interference to the mic&cable, and bleeding sound from the other room (or any other ambient noise, obviously)
true, but you may very well need it for/monitoring/... to play back a reference track while your vocalist fills in, or while a guitarist improvs - there are times when a click track just won't be enough while recording.
I think the argument here isn't that the user needs the keyboard to be tactile/instead/ of looking at the screen, but in addition.
Especially for situations where I've made notes elsewhere, or I'm following direction from someone else, I'm frequently looking at printed copy while I'm typing. Finding my place constantly in two separate places is not as fast as being able to keep a constant flow going.
I agree that it's nice to see the mistakes as you type them, but I find that my muscle memory tells me my fingers have made a mistake/before/ my eyes register the same mistake.
tactile feedback will always be a good part of an interface - not always practical, but certainly useful. I don't always look at my phone when I dial, and I'm not looking at the display when I'm checking my voicemail - If there were no contours to the buttons, and confirmation of button presses, it would still be usable, but not as much so.
think about the rash of flat keyboards that were attempted in the 80s with calculators and even computer keyboards. Other than form-factor goodness, there hasn't been much change from the style of keyboard - there's still a need for distinct buttons, and a definite button-press.
um, seems like a bit of a complicated process to just throw out all of your (very) useful and usable midi information. why not just use something like Midi PatchBay
just so you know, you can also 'draw' in the notes as well, in the sidescroller view. Too bad it doesn't have a simple notation feature. That would have made it a perfect package for a musician that doesn't yet have experience with music on computers, and useful enough for someone who is just using it as a sketch pad.
I'm just pissed at the fact that I can't export to anything useful, though.
*Its, *Its, *Its, *Its, *Its, *Its, *Its, *Its, and last, but not least, *Its.
thank you, thank you, thank you... I'm glad to see that i'm not the only one disgusted by this. It's one thing to be nitpicky about typos or slang, but unnecessary grammar mistakes just bug me.
Why is it considered offtopic when someone corrects a person.
Well, I can't speak for the mods, but I thought the spirit of the parent was to be funny. He accomplished that, although he was slightly inaccurate. You pointing out what you did was like someone dissecting a joke until it's no longer funny.
a la "well, technically, a chicken may not really have the mental sophistication to/want/ to go to the other side of the road. Perhaps if there were food, or offspring, but there would need to be some instinctual impetus for... " and on and on.
It would be a different matter if the facts for his post needed to be accurate. I'd welcome corrections, but, unlike the original poster, a corrective post isn't really accomplishing anything in that vein. That's why your post (and mine) is Offtopic. I'm not saying it's not welcome or completely useless, but you shouldn't be surprised that it's considered Offtopic.
i agree about the shuffle (although i think it's pretty easy to add a shortcut - probably something on Macosxhints), but the search is same as safari - Cmd option F

um, then lots of people get to go, "woohoo!" and start making choices. Good times for all.

sorry, but it's just that your sig has something to do with natural language interfaces, so I couldn't let that pass.
Also, I had visions of laptops lying on top of people that pay rent.

and since the original question was regarding a laptop, the G5 can't really enter into it, seeing as how it's not yet in use in the powerbooks.

that was the funniest thing i've seen here in a while. perhaps i need to get out more.
While i would concede a point arguing that the current intel offerings are as fast or faster, I have to ask the question :
what world do you live in where a Cray is considered a personal computer?!
