When you say PPC do you mean a PPC Mac? Why go from an x86 with propriety BIOS to PPC with propriety BIOS? Simply just wait for a Motheboard manufacture that ships with an alternative BIOS.
It depends on how the BIOS is connected to the motherboard. Most are socketed and easily replaced and even if soldered directly onto the board can be still be flashed with some effort. The main problem is choice, most people are n't willing to open up their PC just to try out an OS.
Actually the production part of most music is a very small fraction of the overall cost. Most of the costs involved go in Marketing/Advertising and paying off the retailers to take your CD's.
The problem with high prices is not production costs but the distribution cartel that controls the music industry. This is why the big companies are scared of the internet distribution model, piracy is a factor but not the major one.
If you're a musician what difference does it make if you get 2% on 1,000,000 sales compared to 80% on 25,000 sales? That is the future, more artists accessible to the public, less sales per artist but with a much higher percentage of the sale price going to the artist.
I can't understand why they dont just label the Ctrl key Control.. It's not for a lack of space. Granted you may want to be consistant and change the Alt key too which would be a problem, well on my keyboard anyway where the keys are 2/3 size of Control. However, having said that it's always control-alt-delete and not control-alternate-delete.

Well one interesting legal point someone mentioned a while back was whilst most countries constitutions do not allow spying on their citizens there is nothing stopping them from spying on other counties citizens. A legal loophole would allow lets say the US and UK to have an agreement whereby they say "you spy on mine and I'ill spy on yours and we'ill exchange the information"
Hmm, someone has way too much free time, especially with the whole PI thing, anyway regradless the point about Persephone is wrong. The Architect explicitly says that an "intuitive program" discovered the solution to the problem of choice by accident and therefore would in affact is the mother of the Matrix. In the game Persephone is described as a intuitive program that goes around kissing people trying to understand the human psyche.
Well I dont know about Mid-range but I do remember from a few years back at university when I built el-cheapo machines for people. You could always get a S3 card for some single digit price.
These days you don't even need a Video card, just get a board with onboard/shared memory graphics card. S3 cant compete for the low end because in most respects it does n't exist anymore.
Did n't someone buy S3 out because they had some rather nice patents that they purchased from another dead company?
Google is no.1 for a reason, they produced the best search engine without any major advertising.
I'm all for competition but if Microsoft want to take over Googles' no 1 spot by just having deeper pockets than I sincerely hope they fail.*
If however they intend to make a better search engine then good luck to them.
* Yes I know MS have more money to throw at R&D.
Most geeks will only see this in terms of technical value.. I mean so many people here are saying "so what, it's not like they put made a dual CPU laptop" or "it's crap because I cant use my XYZ gfx card" are simply missing the point.
I'm not really a big fan of Apple stuff but it was the same with the iMac.. "oh, so what it's just a monitor and PC in one, been done before, etc etc" but it sold really well because like it or not the majority of people who use computers are not techies.
I like this idea too, because I've had to use a laptop for long periods and I can see how an arangement like this would be much more comfortable. It would also be useful when doing presentations, it looks like the viewing angle would be better.
Hmm, that would n't really score in a cost to benefit analysis.
An extra CPU to save you 1-2 minutes a day would be kind of silly, unless your making 100's of $//E an hour.
Actually I knew a guy who actually did some work on the original card (cant remember what it was called).
From what I can tell the main problem was that these guys where mainly software people from the Demo scene with little experience at making actual silicon. They had demos' in FPGA form but these were not near the finished product because you can only do so much with an FPGA. So in the end alot of their claims where based on simulated/calculated performance.
I dont know if they actually did get to make any ASIC's but what I do know is they kept on missing the windows that they had to get the product out to make any money, so the next card had to be better than the next generation of competitors products. Eventually people just gave up on them.
Why is everyone suddenly called XYZ Labs? When I hear that I get the impression of lots of guys in white lab coats and I'm pretty sure thats not whats going on with these guys.
I agree it does not *require* a hardware design, but it is a hardware design because Intel is in the hardware business. The Suspend to Disk functionality is part of ACPI.
There is always the "gotta have the latest" crowd, infact I can admit being one of them a good few years back, the problem is you spend more time upgrading/tinkering with your machine then you do actually using it.
A large proportion of "Gamers" fall into this catagory, you know the type of people who will buy that "special" ram that give you a 5% speed increase for double the price.
Fair play though, people are more than free to spend their money how they want. If they want to spend it on the latest Intel shinny thing then good luck to them I say.
In answer to your question about avoiding rebooting even when the power is down, most likely to be "suspend to disk". Memory contents are copied to a part of the hard disk when you turn "off" and restored if the machine loses power.
The problem with suspend to disk is that you have to store the "state" of any adapters so that they can be restored too when power is restored. Your add-on adapters need to support this feature otherwise it just wont work, the spec has been out for a while but I'm not sure how well it has been implemented up to now.
The announcement of a 3.2GHz P4 with 2MB of cache targeted at gamers as reported by The Enquirer is more of an eye opener to me. The price tag will probable live up to the "Extreme" label tho, seems like they are affraid that the Athlon 64 will take away some of their "bleeding edge gotta have it" revenue.

Yeah, that's half of the problem, most geeks spend more time tinkering with and configuring their machines than actually using them.
Bad programmers write bad programs regardless of the language.
Yes our friends BitBoys have an "Acceleon" range that is a combination of software/hardware to full hardware implementations.
Now I know their previous products have had a rather strong vapour but maybe they've finally found their niche.

But they do have some meaning..

AT in "Advanced Technology" comes from IBM AT, ie the name for the 286 - not so advanced now
ATA being the hard drive "attachment" for the above AT computer.
IDE is called IDE because before IDE the hard drive controller was on a seperate card.
PCI was an all new one I guess, so I'ill grant you that one
ATX meant AT eXtended, but BTX?! Who do I complain to
You could always buy one of those USB Serial ports.
Oh come on, thats got to be the worse acronym I've ever heard!

Oops, make that "The Inquirer" :)
Much like a TV. That's what Intel/MS wants to do, make the PC into a "proper" consumer device.
Was n't very sucessful though, was meant for slim PC's where the PCI slots where on a riser card.
