I think is not short-sighted when Apple is afraid the chips their platforms rely on end on the hands of the enemy (Google, to name one). ARM has gained strategic value in the mobile war. It may be a big cost for them, but a cost they need to pay if they want to win the campaign. So, short-sighted? No, quite the contrary. And some conglomerates have survived for a very long time, ask Mitsubishi about it, they make everything from pens to rocket engines.
Seems to me that it's all part of Steve's marketing campaign... This guy probably never existed in real life and the guy playing his role will soon start shooting videos threatening to disclose more information, prototypes, etc a la Bin Laden and leaking them to Arab news networks from time to time so everyone at Apple is scared and work harder...
A rigorous scientific and professional approach would be far better than an amateur approach any day. Otherwise we deny the phenomenon entirely, or rely on amateur people who keep finding traces of them anywhere they look. You know they saying: "To a person holding a hammer, every problem is a nail."
