Mandrake 9.1 (altleast the version I downloaded...maybe they fixed it in an update or something) installs nicely but installs an incorrect or bugged version of qt which basically meant I couldnt open gnome or kde on the box. I could get IceWM to start but none of the gnome or kde applications worked so it wasnt too useful. I had to get the box working and hey what do you know...win98se installed just fine. After I got the box back, I threw on 9.0 to check and it worked just fine; around this time I saw something on mandrake expert (or whatever it is called) about the qt problems but still dont think its worth trying to track down and work with the files I need. also the portion of the mandrake installer where you choose mouse type is just horrible and should burn in hell.
that sounds like a real PITA, im looking for a way to have hotspots in the top corners that activate the change desktop command, its probobally possible but I have no idea how
I think the lightstep window manager as it is enabled on install (omars installer, simplicity theme) is the best I have ever used, you lose windows if the shell crashes but there is a command to bring them back (but you have to rearrange them and hte shell crashes much less than explorer) I love the speed of switching by jamming the mouse into the left or right corner to move up or down in the sequence of desktops (loops around at the end). I would continue to use lightstep if I could make my desktop display normally, not just all the icons like I figured out but the real desktop in the order it should be AND allow me to drag and drop with it.
I have tried to configure gnome to do the desktop switching with the upper corners (there are menus there but its no big deal) but I cant seem to find out how, does anyone know how to make gnome or kde have litestep vwm behavior?
nvidia has one too and I would hope matrox has one (I had a box with a matrox millemium(maybe 2) and the windows drivers had TONS of very nice features that I cant seem to bring back on linux)
If you have an nvidia card, you can use nView (maybe without one but I think its part of the drivers) do do multi desktop, I only tried it a bit but I think its better than powertools
well...if you are a highschool student you prolly have plenty of time. Works same way for taking a spammer to small claims court as mentioned in a previous/. post
There are going to be 20 posters now saying that in fact you DONT do this...
I however know that there are plenty of people who do this...I dont really want a 128kbps mp3 encoded on some cheap encoder that just happened to be the one I downloaded, and I certainly dont want to make a CD out of them, if I am going to use a CD, I want a real CD. There are many bands that I know own multiple CDs from that I never would have purchased if I had not heard "oh hey go download this and check it out" and had the option to actually do so for free. There is much good music that is not played on the radio and if you are talking about music with someone online, its not like they can just go grab their cd and pop it in for you to listen to, they could send you the file but hey...piracy.
Streams might be acceptable but most artists websites only have a song or 2 (if at all) to stream and maybe its not a song I care to listen too. I also tend to have to listen to a song more than once to decided I want to make a purchase and streaming makes that difficult.
What if your ISP allows you to resell(or regiveaway) your service via wifi...and YOU have a TOS saying people are responsible for what they do...then hand the RIAA the only info you "have" (do to the highly protective nature of the pirate): the MAC address from a cheap old PCMIA card that could be anywhere
Still in highschool in New Hope(mpls suburb) and despite being in one of the better off districts in the state (we passed our refferendum the first time), there are still many areas that were hit hard
I just finished my sophmore year and the classes I did the worst in (statistically it was Honors/IB spanish but im just not good at language and I still did quite well) were the classes that were mixed. Only in my situation, its less of a mix more of a me and 2 other kids who care vs an entire class that wants to sleep. In my american history class, I didnt have a single problem and I always recieved 100% or better on the tests, yet the sheer bad "vibe" I was getting ruined a few assignments and with a strict late policy, began to bring my grade to its knees. 2 assignments (little ones...a worksheet from a movie and something else) and one day my grade was an NC, by the end of the semester I was able to bring it up and my semester average was a B+ even with a final that was given as follows:
1: Hand out practice test entitelted "Practice Final Test"
2: Give normal test time
3: Have class take out books and correct and fill in inncorrect/missing answers
4: Send test home and continue process until all answers are correct, must bring next day.
5: Hand out scantron sheets
6: Have students take out practice test
7: Have students CROSS OUT the word Practice
8: Collect filled in scantron sheets
the sad thing is...im pretty sure there are people in that class who failed that test. As I have seen other slashdotters say in responce to previos articles, maybe its not our education system thats lacking, maybe its our students with no motivation , no will to learn that are bringing the system down. Look at our role models...Avril Lavigne is a highschool dropout, 50 cent admits to killing people and selling vast amounts of crack in interviews...so far we have: Requrements for pop-punk goddess: no degree needed, oh but it does help to win a contest and sing with Shania Twain and be one of the TINY fraction of people that make it that big in the record industry. Requirements for hardcore rapper: no degree needed, past life of crime that should have you locked up for life is a +, and once again, being in the tinmy fraction of people who make it...yeah...that helps.
The comment that comes to my mind, is one referring to the mindset of south koreans who view an education as a valueable and admirable trait. Oh and wouldnt you know it, the girl who was #1 in my freshman class (not anymore due to the fact that music classes do not give A+'s) was born here but to asian (at least one korean but thats just an example) parents. Young children shouldnt be given 50 cent albums...at least with avril you cant tell she dropped out, you are just told that you shouldnt date people until they are rocking on mtv, then you should change their mind.
As to technology in public schools (I did go to a middle school who's supposed focus was on technology) I really like the way I learned it. In school there was the looming apple IIgs lab with the library of MECC games at every computer. Im not sure if we used those in kindergarden but I think we started for sure by first grade. Those games were educational and fun (graphics sucked but kids werent used to computers at home so it didnt matter). Then at my dads studio he had a 386, it had at some poin a copy of window 3.x but its main use was running "Studio Manager" a dos quickenlike program that excelled at fiscal management in a studio setting. Somewhere in there we got a nice speedy sexy 486, we had a whopping 8mb of ram, a cd drive and a 14.4 modem and it was at HOME, learned some basic compuserve usage. Now back at school, still went to the IIgs's once a week but now I was more curious than before, I really wanted to make that mouse do something, I wanted to see files and structure not just games. At home somwhere in this time I discovered Mosaic...ooh the glory of www.*.com, then at school still the IIgs and now some Performa's in each classroom for the teacher. we started learning to type for real in 4th grade, basically using little red boxes with a tiny lcd with 1 line of text and a keyboard. 5th gr
we learned how to use the abacus in around 3rd grade...im not sure if we were supposed to know how to multiply and divide then (maybe only 1 digit numbers) but we could sure add and subtract with them...and it was easier than carrying around 10 apples and adding 3 pears for the total # of fruits
it is so absolutley true, if the water company doesnt provide you good water, do something, if they CANT provide water up to their standards, make them buy you a filter. It should be your right to have good water and, let me guess, there is only one water provider available (I doubt you have multiple sets of pipes)
dont they have to provide the source if they EVER distributed it...so couldnt you call them up and say you want to see the source for [insert file name you want but they dont give]
if they say no, they get slapped with a gpl lawsuit because they wont give the source
This year my school just finalized installation of a modern language lab. It consists of rows of study carrels with clear fronts so the teacher can see you, in your booth is a litlle box with a display and a bunch of buttons and a headphone/mic combo (think fast food).
the teacher has a normal windows pc at the front of the room connected to various audio input sources and his/her own headset. the boxes appear to be connnected with cat5 and standard ethernet: I accidentally ripped one of the boxes off the desk and it was attatched to a piece of cat5 and I assume that the rack sitting on the floor next to the teacher contains some switches.
Im not sure what this can do exactly but we usually use it for class listening. We have also used it to have p2p or small group discussions (which the teacher can listen in on), record and listen to ourselves, and to listen to a segment but have control of the playback.
ahh I just remembered the products were manufactured by Tandberg Educational. We used the elice unit
well the original problem I had was the qwest dsl not the qwest isp...their support wasnt so bad (maybe all the customers just couldnt get past being pissed at qwest to be pissed at qwest.net) since qwest is still the only choice for dsl here and failed to provide service even after several months, I had to go with cable RIGHT as it got handed over to comcast...it seems alright and I havnt had any problems other than the things I wish I had (more up and the ability to host servers without violating terms)
wait so..they whipped out side by side linux and unix code WITHOUT you signing an NDA? I think thats is the exact negligence needed to void their rights to that code...hey I mean testify in court that you have a photographic memmory, just make sure to do it AFTER they show the code to the court hehe.
even if you listen to crappy music, maybe the artist wrote a few good songs that you like but wouldnt get radio play, you would NEVER have heard them if you hadnt bought the cd because you would only grab up the radio singles
I listen to music from good artists in my opinion (well...who doesnt) and I find the use of singles downloads is great to see if I like the album. Usually I will hear a few songs, maybe listen to something from another album if I am not familiar with teh group and then purchase the disk. I do this with p2p because its free, if I had access to the apple music store I would gladly pay 99cents a track to sample an album but ONLY IF I could subtract the 99cents (or maybe 2 songs worth) from the price of the cd. There is no reason to pay for the tracks twice which is why I use p2p

shouldnt that be KWTF? and shouldnt this post be KRe:KWTF

maybe thats because we dont have too many oil tycoon reporters

maybe the key to your life is to stop looking for low paying jobs...they dont pay much
the crapitative software sucks but try Notmad explorer...much easier and I think you will be pleased with your machine
I think the correct answer is give programmers slow computers with a godly compile cluster at their fingertips
