  1. How's the laptop market doing? on Intel Loses Market Share to AMD · · Score: 5, Insightful

With the decreasing market share of desktops in the consumer computer market, I'm interested in knowing how AMD is doing in the laptop sector and total overall processors sold in comparison with Intel. Most people I know wouldn't consider anything other than Centrino for some reason that I don't understand (marketing?) Furthermore, how will Apple's new MacBook and other Intel offerings affect AMD's apparent marketshare takeover?

I was surprised to see that nothing in the top ten is politics related (although we don't really know how many of the hurricane katrina searches were politic related.) Nothing about Bush or his administration, nothing about the war in Iraq. I think Brad Pitt at #5 probably says a lot about the state of popular culture.

I'd be interested in seeing the searches for different age groups, and the total number by age group, sex, etc... That would make for some interesting analysis of common stereotypes.

On the Froogle side of things, it's interesting how Apple owns most of the top keywords. What does this say about the age of Froogle users and how technology users use the internet to shop for more technology?

  4. Re:Pot? Meet Kettle. on BitComet Banned From Private Trackers · · Score: 2, Insightful

To be fair to the poster, these trackers are private for a reason. Well, more than one actually, but it's not so a bunch of people get together to share pictures of the trip to NYC. More like, they want to restrict how many leechers are trying to get access to all the free copyrighted material.

If you've surfed private trackers, you'll know there are VERY few legitimate files on these sites. Of course, the occasional demo or freeware is posted, so everyone can get them quickly, but a large percentage of the files on these trackers are not legal files. Anyone who denies this has their eyes covered in some sort of awesome /. induced bias screen.

I'll give the guy some points though, the movie was better than made out to be in a lot of reviews. But I still don't understand how this random review gets on the front page of /..

    1. Any IM client that isn't secure could one day prove to be a huge problem for a company or a userbase. Fortunately, there hasn't been widespread IM viruses, but who knows?

    2. The ability to VoIP, change nicknames, block certain types of users, send images, create smilies and a variety of other features are always fun to have. But they can't be intrusive. I hate MSN's interface, way too many useless gadgets that try to be cool. On the other hand, Google Talk is very clean but Jabber isn't the most feature-full system.

    3. I don't want to see ads when IMing. I don't want to get popups from using software, and I don't need daily news. Google Talk is awesome for this, as is Trillian and Adium.

If they're trying to get into the Mac Mini market, they should really have put more effort into getting a device that looks better. The device sounds like a good concept, but who wants to put something that doesn't look great in their kitchen? On the other hand, the Mac Mini (although it's more expensive) seems like it received a lot more polishing on the outside. I know... it's an Appple product. But other companies should have caught on that good looking products are important if they want to reach a large market share for an electronic applicance?

  8. Am I the only one who doesn't see the Revolution? on Nintendo Revolution Details Emerge · · Score: 0

Ok, so great. Yet another Nintendo console. But what's so revolutionary about it? It seems both the big M and the big N are trying to market their consoles as the "Next big thing" yet they really only evolve a bit from current gen consoles. Smaller form factor? Better graphics? Ok, what's so revolutionary about that? It's been the goal of consoles since the Atari came out.

Hopefully the Revolution in Nintendo's console will be a bit more than this, because honestly, things like adding a second screen aren't bad. Minor advances in gameplay are usually good, but something seems a bit anti-climatic if the only thing new about this console is what's always been new for every previous console.

  9. To the people worried about the Music... on Serenity Trailer Finally Released · · Score: 2, Insightful

I also thought about this when seeing the trailer. Then I remembered The Two Towers trailer using a remix of the theme song from Requiem for a Dream, which was a bitttt more techno than the LOTR soundtrack. Honestly, right now I'm not worried. Trailer makes it look rather good.

Kind of dissapointed to not have seen Book in the trailer, and only a few frames with Kayle (sp?), but you have to remember that 2 hours will not provide the same amount of room to develop 6-7 characters effectively. And Josh usually focuses on character in his series, going in depth about each one. So let him do his thing of focusing on key cast properly, and maybe we'll see more of the rest in other installments?

Hell... Maybe we'll get to see it back on TV one day? (I know I'm crossing my fingers, although Mr. Whedon has said he will not return Firefly to TV... money does make people change ideas, as seen with Family Guy.)

  11. Re:Allow me to boost your ego on How Much Respect Do You Get? · · Score: 1

That might be a nice way of thinking about the business world, but the sad truth is that it won't happen. It just so happens that ever since capitalism started running, there has been the need for a group of people with a certain skillset that most techs, engineers, etc don't have. Even before "big business" you've had rulers that knew nothing about the "real" world, but still had the power. It's human nature to have a group of people that will lead the rest of the pack. Although they may not be as useful, society is built around having them. Even if they sometimes don't appear to have the best leadership skills, or the most intelligence, managers, CEOs, accountants, etc still effectively control the world because they control where the real things go, who makes them and what is made. Of course the world would be a better place if a giant computer ruled over the immaterial world and took care of being able to properly distribute all the "real" things, but that ain't happening. The power to get real business done isn't usually found in a geek who's been fooling in BASIC since he was 4, because the skillset of the workers is different than the rulers. If everyone had equal people skills, and skill to lead, control a team... Then yes, maybe the market of yesterday would end, but that's not soon.

I always wondered, if some pervert wanted in on child porn without the legal troubles, wouldn't he just have to become a cop dealing in this business? A detective can't kill a man in a murder investigation, why is this allowed in this case?

  13. Cost:Profit Ratio Biggest Issue? on Caveats In Reselling DSL Bandwidth To Neighbors? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The NetShare service from Speakeasy does look nice, but let's say you decide to use it with the 6mbps package. It costs $110/month. Don't think you will be making a profit with this type of sharing, at least not considerable profit. It MIGHT cover the cost of the connection, if you find enough willing customers. Let's say you resell 768Kbps to 7 people, for $20/month. You'll be making around $20 after taxes and other overhead costs. Considering Speakeasy's cheapest offering is $40/month, you could potentially resell half that bandwidth to twice the people for the same price ($20.) This would mean around $280 in sales, minus overhead around $140-$150 profit. If you can manage this, wow! One of my main concerns for this type of connection sharing would be the upload bandwidth. If you divide all the upload bandwidth in 14 equal shares, everyone is left with around 50Kbps of usuable upload bandwidth, or around 6 kilobytes per second. They'll all have 90k/sec down (including you). If you can properly set up bandwidth restrictions, these numbers are actually not too shabby, if you don't plan on uploading anything. Now when they are wondering why they get shitty speeds with Bittorrent, they'll go to you, but that's another issue. The NetShare service actually looks pretty usuable. They'll take care of everything (billing and all) but they don't mention profit, only "bringing down the cost of your connection", but I'm sure there's a way to use it for profit. And of course if you don't live in an apartment building, I'd say forget it. You could reach 5-6 houses if you're lucky, and not all will want to share a connection. Also you need to consider teaching all your customers about proper methods of protecting their data. If they're sharing anything and it is used against them, they'll blame you.

Many countries have been living with monthly download caps for a while now. For example, Videotron (the largest cable ISP in Quebec, Canada) limits its users to 10gigabytes/month, which is 1/3 the amount NTL allows. 1GB per day is MORE than enough for anyone, even hardcore warez downloaders (30gb/month!) If someone has to download more than 1GB worth of software/music/etc it is easily possible to schedule your downloads. Even with 15 hours of streamed audio at 128Kbps, someone would only do about ~850megabytes. Stop putting your panties in such a fit for something other people have suffered through and accepted to live with already.
