But all of that aside, what does it mean?

It means a lot of things, on different levels. I'll just list a few that come to mind, without going into details.

    1. Choice. One thing that distinguishes man from machine is the ability to make irrational choices. One of the best lines of the movie: "Because I choose to." IOW, I have no good reason to fight you, but it's my choice to do so, and I am free to make that choice.
    2. Politics. Peace can be achieved through other means than war. Neo goes empty-handed to machine city and "negotiates" a truce.
    3. Faith vs Knowledge. The Oracle represents, to me, the ability to believe without seeing, ie, faith. The Architect represents scientific knowledge. The world needs both.
    4. Freedom. The Architect implies at the end that people can be freed if they choose to. But will they? If freedom comes with a high price, are we likely to take it? I think a lot of us would choose to stay in the Matrix (which can be regarded as a metaphor for the political and economical system of the western societies).
These are just abstract ideas that the Matrix movies make me think about. In terms of explanations of the actual events in the movie, look at various other posts here. There are plenty of good explanations. Many of the things are resolved, but you have to think about them a bit. Others are ambiguous, probably on purpose. And yet others are harder to explain. But, after all, it's just a movie, and not every single detail is important. The movie(s) achieved its goals: to entertain me and to make me think.

I agree wholeheartedly. The ending was unexpected, but it was the obvious choice in retrospect. I guess a lot of sci-fi geeks expected a geek ending to a geek movie, with machines being blown to bits :) and sun in the sky. In other words, a totally unrealistic, feel-good, hollywood ending. When it didn't happen, people felt betrayed. Even more so since the ending is far from happy.

Don't be so sure. Look at all the blunders made by corporations when it came to Unix: AT&T, Sun, DEC, etc (see here). History repeats itself, it seems.

(of it's not that simple; there are many forces pushing for such decisions; but the lack of vision and coherent strategy is sad, to say the least).

This is a very good point. Red Hat, Inc built its reputation and brand name with the hobby crowd. Now they are alienating it by doing this. I kinda understand the decision, but why be so drastic? End support for RH9 is April? End of line for RHL? Why not have support for RH9 until the end of 2004 and say that RHL is continued by Fedora, a community-developed distribution sponsored by RH? This is bad PR and bad management, in the "good" tradition of corporate blindness to long-term objectives.

My question is, couldn't this technique provide realistic 3-d effects? If I could put the two images in a 60fps loop, wouldn't the eye be fooled into seeing both images at the same time and somehow giving the 3-d effect? If this works, I'm sure somebody did it before. Anyone has references? If it doesn't work, why not? Maybe I would just see a blurred image...

Looking on this page, the University Circle is quite a large area, with bussinesses, museums, etc. They purposefully covered an area much larger than the campus. It might be that there are even some University facilities in the extended area, far from the main campus (this tends to be the case with old universities in urban environments).

I've had high-level calculus courses and I could never remember all the complicated proofs and formulas taught, but I could reproduce them by remembering the ideas behind them and maybe a few tricks used.

I think your teachers hide their lack of understanding/interest behind formulas and rules. Try talking to someone who can give you the big picture. Once you get it, the rest will seem much easier.

I got all my Calculus outside the US, so I don't know of such books. However, there are many intriguing suggestions in this thread. What I would suggest is reading about the history of Calculus: the problems that lead to its invention by Newton and Leibnitz. This will give you a good understanding of its most common applications. An anecdote that I heard was that Newton was asked to compute the area of a weirdly shaped (curvy) piece of land. He used integrals, of course.

From personal experience, I think having a good teacher that can explain Calculus intuitively is extremely important. Learning it from a book or from somebody who spits formulas at you is not the best way.

All me and my friends can figure out is that they are trapped inside a matrix within a matrix

I thought so too, at the beginning, but then I reconsidered. It's too obvious and it would make the first movie rather pointless.

I also think I understand why they alllow Neo to exist and return again and again (besides fixing a flaw). it sets humanity on a predictable course

They don't *allow* him to exist, he is the one flaw that is inevitable in the Matrix (according to the architect). My thinking is that the Matrix tolerates the existence of Zion (and they don't destroy it completely in each iteration---that would explain the 23 people) because the people there can find the one flaw. The Matrix itself cannot find it. Then, the oracle brings the one to the source, helping to reload the Matrix. They take a small risk that the one will destroy the matrix, but, every time, the human nature takes over and the one cannot bring himself to destroy the Matrix (and everything else with it...)

Unfortunately, this doesn't explain why Neo was capable of stopping the sentinels and why the people of Zion don't remember the other Matrix reloads (remember what the architect said about how old everything is).
