  1. An easy way to dodge the license on Gateway to Ship PCs with Pre-Installed DRM Music Files · · Score: 4, Interesting

I would hook the boot HD up to a different computer, extract all the songs onto it and format the drive on the gateway afterwords. Never once did you boot thier install of the OS that has the license agreement. And since they "gave" you the songs on your computer you're free to do what you want with them. I.E. remove DRM and enjoy in OGG format.

I myself have been victimized by this. They keep track of what you have bought and returned. If you returned too many things that costs a bit ( The stuff they make commision on ) they will stop selling you anything and have that manager tell you that you can't buy the item. I have had this happen on more than one occasion.

I can assure you that this is totally commision related. The last time they told me NO they looked up my history and said "You return too much stuff". This is what is so bad about tracking your name is now the salesman can check your name to see if your someone he should waste his time on.

While I am glad to see it on news sites, I am sad that they gave in so easily.
What we really need is a HUGE public trial where someone like this stands up against these huge companies. If people keep giving in the "average" people will have no idea how crazy this law is.
I have learned that bullies back down most of the time when they see someone has the courage to stand up and say "No you are not going to tell me what to do" I think these companies would back down also after their lawyers told them that if this goes to court they are not going to win and look really bad to the public.

Actually you are incorrect. If Linux really took off on it the loses would be closer to double that.
They lose around 100$ a unit. Imagine a 100 or 200 unit rendering farm. That's a 10k lose for Microsoft. Multiply this by the amount of cheap businesses that would see this as a viable option.

I don't mean the over zealous FBI.
I mean what "stealing" is a crime and is not. I like how everyone likes to only follow the laws they think they should. If you uncap your modem and get 2 Gigabits and I only get 28 Kilobits then you are STEALING from me. When you take extra bandwidth it comes from somewhere.

I must say from my experience that this is true. I was despised and even hated by management because I wasn't "dependant" on my job. Sure I could use the money, but they knew I didn't care personally or financially whether I worked there or not.
