No. It is important to understand that the DTV transition is a transition from analog broadcasting to digital broadcasting. It is not a transition from analog broadcasting to High Definition broadcasting. Digital broadcasting allows for High Definition broadcasts, but High Definition is not required, and you do not need to buy a HDTV to watch digital TV. A Standard Definition DTV (which is simply a TV with an internal digital tuner), or a digital-to-analog converter box hooked to an analog TV, is all that is required to continue watching over-the-air broadcast television. Digital broadcast television includes Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) formats. You can watch High Definition programming on a Standard Definition DTV (or on an analog TV hooked to a digital-to-analog converter box), but it won't be in full High Definition quality. It is also important to know that Standard Definition DTVs are comparably priced to similar sized analog TVs.

But as a monopoly, it is illegal to use your position to reduce competition.
even when you are ahead- it is allowable to improve your products & marketshare at the expense of the competition- it is not allowable to suppress the competition through overwhelming leverage.
hat I agree they may have been and likely were guilty of- but not currently... now microsoft has let go their mandates about 'windows only shops' for the greates volume discount licenses for pc makers- and pc makers ship alternate os's
You'd scream bloody murder if every time you bought a new TV, you'd have to buy new music media, new video media, have the cable company replace the box, and have the electrical company add a different voltage to your home.
And yet- microsoft has some AMAZING backwards compatibility with their own products with every generation forward.. I know people who still run windows 3.1 apps under XP-- let alone one corp who uses a godawful kermit dos program for a communication tool...
It is if it it makes competition virtually impossible. That's why we have the laws that we do. and I contend that the current monopoly is one of fact- not law- and it's beacuse of the 'money'. There are viable alternatives- apple OS and linux both exist to a degree that the monstrosity that is the MS microsoft share can viably say- "we aren't the only answer out there"
I am no 'fanboi' and I do think microsoft may be a monopoly de facto, but that is not in itself illegal. what a monopoly de jure chooses to do with it's powerful position in the marketplace can be found illegal in some countries- not all.
However your argument sucks.
Microsoft is so entrenched, and so anti-standards, that your data and business operations are held hostage. You can't escape the Widows lock-in without paying a lot of money and abandoning some of your core applications.
so spend the goddamn money.. it's only a monopoly as long as your mindset of 'paying a lot of money' is the barrier. just because something is "very fucking expensive" is not a reason to legislate it out of existence- it is a reason to accept or reject it.
What the Hell? spreedsheets were the killer app for PC's period.
it was not mac-specific-- it was a much earlier dawn of the PC age.
"VisiCalc was the first spreadsheet program available for personal computers. It may well be the application that turned the microcomputer from a hobby for computer enthusiasts into a serious business tool.[1] VisiCalc sold over 700,000 copies in six years.[2]"
I really feel that 'if a child wasn't involved' then it is not child porn/something that needs to be stopped.
I further think-- anyone with a contrasting viewpoint leads necassarily to admitting all those against vanilla porn as 'demeaning to women' etc are right.
Now- for those 100% against both types of porn, I'm willing to conceed the possibility-- but I don't think one is permissible (vanilla) where the other is not (cartoonish children) and I also think CGI feature films should be legal as well---
if Playboy and Hustler & Manga & everything else in the XXX world that is legal does not impose on the freedom & impact of others then owning a depiction of the purple twins blowing bart (I've see this very file briefly from usenet) is not something that endangers children.
a whole lot of the camera companies install them free for revenue share.

and I can't believe no one else has mentioned it

it comes with red-blue glasses for the purchaser to send to people that they intend to use it with.
standard definition, and high definition programming will still be available after the changeover.
what is changing is the frequencies available to transmit the signal-- and the format of the signal.
the fact that a station is only available in regular resolution does not mean it won't be available on changeover day.

If I want a new TV, will I have to buy a High Definition TV (HDTV) to watch digital broadcast television after the transition?

I disagree in the strongest of terms- expense to market entry/exit is not itself a actionable reason to look to anti-monopoly law

Where to begin is a huge question. I stick to the most obvious point
microsoft is not a personal computer company
they are a SOFTWARE company
MONOPOLIES ARE NOT ILLEGAL--
their actions may be
the granting of a patent is in fact the grant of monopoly status
I am no 'fanboi' and I do think microsoft may be a monopoly de facto, but that is not in itself illegal.

FFS it is IN THE SAME CASE!
